Thilmera7 is a free system monitoring tool for all recent versions of the Windows operating system. It reminds me a bit of Conky, it is extremely light-weight in terms of resource, and has a compact interface.

Tip: Check out other system monitors that we have reviewed in the past like My System Monitor or MultiMon.

Thilmera7

Thilmera widget and tray icon

Note: Thilmera is a portable application and the archive has 5 executables (EXEs).  The only working versions of these are Thilmera7.exe and Thilmera7_64.exe. I used the latter for testing it. Running Thilmera7 Lite displays a message that the regular Thilmera7.exe can be used like the lite version. The 7s versions are donation ware licensed editions.

When you run Thilmera7, it displays a small widget that displays the date, time, memory usage, CPU usage, GPU usage, disk usage, write/read speed, and network usage. This is a sticky window which stays on top of other applications and you can minimize it by clicking on the system tray icon. Hovering the cursor over the tray icon displays a tool-tip that reveals the version number of the program as well as Memory, CPU, GPU, and Disk usage (in % percentage). Thanks to the moving bars, I found myself looking at the widget at times when a program was using a lot of the CPU (when I was streaming videos, loading heavy web pages, multi-tasking).

Customization

Right-clicking on the widget or tray icon brings up a pop-out menu with a lot of options. The first of these is Property, and this is where you control the program's settings. You can customize Thilmera's appearance including the Window size, position or color, and enable an auto-hide option which makes the program appear when you mouse over to the edge of the screen. The wallpaper option allows you to set a background image for the program's interface.

Thilmera widget customization

You can set the widget's orientation to vertical or horizontal, modify the width/height of the column and graph, switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius units. You can even customize the bars by using one of the pre-defined themes and a few other options. The display order lets you rearrange the priority of items displayed on the screen. The clock can be customized as well with an optional 24-hour display and there is even an option to add other clocks (time zones) to the widget.

You may toggle the parameters that are displayed on the screen, e.g. memory, drive or CPU; this may be useful if you don't need the information. Options to add more widgets, e.g. to keep an eye on temperatures, page file memory, and other information are provided as well.

You can set Thilmera to display alerts and play a warning tone when temperature or disk space reach set thresholds. The Network section has optional toggles which can be used to track Cryptocurrency prices and Yahoo Weather. You decide what's displayed in the widget.

Note: There are many hotkeys which you can use to toggle the display just with a press of a key (refer to the keymap menu for the shortcuts).

Report Tool

This tool displays a snapshot of the current process, enum services, display settings and more with all the values displayed in text format. This is very useful for analysis. You have options to set the font used by the tool and to copy the report to the clipboard.

Thilmera report tool

Tip: Right-click on any screen (except on the widget) to exit it.

Screenshot tool

This tool is a nice option that you can use to save a quick full screen screenshot in a single step (auto saved to in Thilmera's screenshot folder). And it makes a cool camera shutter sound when you take a snap. You can optionally enable it to use the Print Screen key as a shortcut. There is an option to take a custom snap by drawing a rectangle on the screen. The screenshot can be saved to the clipboard if you want to quickly paste it into an image editor, or share it online.

Thilmera Screenshot tool

Note: There is a tool called DMTt7, which is short for Disk Monitoring Tool Thilmera7. This is only available in Japanese as of now, so I couldn't test it.

Closing Words

Thilmera is freeware but not an open source application, in case you were wondering. It is a powerful system monitor with built-in alert functionality and lots of customization options. Like most system monitoring tools, you can use Thilmera7 like a real-life usage benchmark tool, to measure your CPU, GPU, and Memory levels and temps while running intensive programs or games.

Now You: Do you use system monitors on your systems?

“thilmera” is purely freeware. It is not a shareware product, but only accepts donations from volunteers (“It’s unclear” on English-language website, but “Development support” is clearly stated on Japanese-language website.
This app is a program created by the Japanese, and the Japanese are the main end users. However, due to the presence of not a little of the end users in other countries, an English site is prepared for its convenience, but it has been “extracted and rebuilt” from the contents of the Japanese site.
      That official information are:

Development support-Shopping at Amazon If you open the Amazon site from the Amazon link on the official website of thilmera and shop in that state, you will be charged a small amount of advertising. (Some products may not be included)

I pay tribute to Ashwin’s article and easy-to-understand explanations (how to use).

This app, has been my favorite since before.
Before that, I used Speccy, Compact Tray Meter, Core Temp, Open Hardware Monitor, HWiNFO, etc.
    Despite their use,
I have experience that the hardware (HDD, motherboard) of Win XP machine (laptop) and Win 8.1 machine (Ultrabook) has been damaged and the PC has become waste.

    Based on that experience,
In “System Monitoring”, I realized the necessity of Real-time monitoring and practical display function, “alarm” in case of abnormality, and “forced shutdown function” when the threshold is exceeded.

    By using “thilmera7”,
    ● Detailed real-time monitoring is possible.
    ● A wide variety of measurement setting options are available.
    ● Various customizations such as display methods are possible.
    ● “Alarm” function and “Forced shutdown” function in case of system error can be set.
    ● Despite high functionality and high performance, the amount of resources (RAM is about 5MB ±, CPU: 0%) is very small.

    > Who is making it?
thilmera is a pure Japanese software whose design, development, operation and maintenance are all provided by the same person. The name of the author is “弦生ささと”. The signature is “Gakuto Matsumura”.
    > What kind of function is there?
    ● Display CPU usage rate and disk usage rate of the process in rank and display subjects that are bottlenecks of system load in an easy-to-understand manner.
    ● Display the GPU usage rate of the process and the GPU memory consumption in the rank to judge whether the use of the PC and the GPU is insufficient for the application of the PC, and it is possible to see the application using and not using the GPU at a glance I can do it.
    ● Equipped with a function to warn you that various temperatures of CPU, HDD, GPU, mother exceed specified values.
    ● You can also set the window to temporarily hide by moving the window easily and mouse over etc.
    ● Equipped with screen shot saving function. You can easily select a rectangle and cut and save the active window, and you can share it to any open range on thilmera’s web server.
    ● Information of multiple PCs can be displayed in batch with PC data sharing function.
    ● Manual and automatic memory purge function. (Non-load – type that does not push out to extraordinary HDD, Threshold setting is possible for each process)
    ● Display of video memory (VRAM).
    ● TCP-UDP real-time report on process unit on PC.
    ● Sound analyzer function to visualize PC sound.
    ● Ability to display the current BTC price of the virtual currency exchange.
    ● It has wide compatibility from Windows XP to Windows 10.

By the way, along with “thilmera7”, the following “system monitors” apps has using also together:
    ● CrystalDiskInfo | This is a disk (HDD / SSD) utility that displays the temperature of HDDs, SSDs and USB devices and “warns you by alarm or email” if there is a problem with those devices.

Awesome GUI; haven’t seen anything quite like it in decades.

HWiNFO, CPU-Z, et al seem better choices.

Unless a device is functioning very poorly, if I find myself watching system monitors, it’s time to shut down and go outside.

A diagnostic tool such as Thilmera7 or one I prefer–CPU-Z (CPU-Z is more in-depth in virtually all areas compared to the tools provided in the Windows OS to identify various hardware components, and thus assists in identifying certain components without the need of opening the case; particularly the core revision and RAM clock rate. It also provides information on the system’s GPU) may help the user identify a problem; however, what one really needs is a tool that can perform the diagnostic information AND a way to correct the problem.

Many times the problem may only be corrected by installing a new hard drive if the diagnostic feedback indicates a poor drive.

At other times, though, a good diagnostic tool has some options to “fix” a problem. I like using “SpeedFan” and “Process Lasso Pro” both of which offer some possibilities for adjusting values that are contributing to a problem such as overheating.

The “Pro” version of Process Lasso can be found on “giveaway” sites several times a year. “SpeedFan” is freeware, an old program that still offers significant information and options for resetting values.

I still use the free (good old) System Explorer 7.1.0.5359 (There is a installer and portable version) (2016-04-30) and on rare occasions I use also Process Explorer v16.30 (’19-09-05).
Also a tool I use is (The free) Core Temp 1.15.1 (’19-08-30) to watch if main processor temp. is steady, in main taskbar.
Sometimes I use HWiNFO 6.12 bld.3930 (for more hardware info -)(there is a 64 bt installer and 32 bit mobile version) ( ’19-08-25).

Thanks for the discovery, Ashwin. I could never have enough of these, always looking for the one that would fit my needs. So far I’ve been using https://entropy6.com/xmeters/ and http://mitec.cz/infobar.html now I have a new utility to play with.

Though I cannot find a setting to reduce the update time. I don’t want it to be 100ms, but maybe 500ms or even 1 second. I’d like to reduce the cpu usage a bit further, because it is too much for my liking, but I cannot find it in the settings. Thank you.

      Nevermind, I actually found it.
It was in “Property” > “Window” > “Main Refresh Speed”.

Even though, I do have mixed feelings about this program. No idea about the donation verification check mentioned above. Though, the updates can be turned off? The option is found at “Property” > “Version Info” > “Automatic update check”.

I am not happy that it takes about 55 MBs of ram, the other utilities I used use about 10 MBs or 15 MBs at most. RAM usage is what prevents me from using fancy apps like https://maxlauncher.sourceforge.io/ (which uses about 70 MBs) simply because it is too much for me, while Keypirinha http://keypirinha.com/ gives a bit more features for 60 MBs.

So I still have mixed feelings about it. It is a bit easier to customize than a Rainmeter skin (settings window versus editing inis), but then again the difference in RAM may not be too much, so I guess it depends on the usage. Rainmeter skins do look pretty, but you need a bit of them (or editing) to get the desired look or measurements.

I am also concerned about the points mentioned above about sending data over the internet on startup (that isn’t for update check). So I will have to consider it more.

This program calls out to remote servers every time you start it. I don’t care what excuses the author gives for this on his website:
    __________________________________________________________________________
Initial startup etc. The confirmation of the revocation status of the digital signature is transmitted to GlobalSign in the HTTP request (it may be recognized as thilmera treatment).

thilmera temperature net ON When starting up and once a day, send an HTTPS request to http://www.thilmera.com for CPU, GPU name, temperature, experience value and mischief prevention Send the character string to get the average temperature of the same thing.
    __________________________________________________________________________

AFAICT, it also automatically calls home to check for updates and there’s no way to stop it from doing any of this short of blocking the program in a firewall.

I *never* use programs that call out like this and which don’t have an option to turn that “feature” off.

No that apps ‘home’ and ‘app’ are nonsense.

The go on about having to check for signatures, then say you can turn it off, then say in recent OS it may not work if you turn it off. They say its freeware, not commercial, then admit its packaged as shareware and you can buy a license.. then that license will only last a year.

        Kinda pretty.. very sketchy.
