Sweet Dreams has been designed to reduce the volume of sound playing on Windows operating systems over time to improve sleep.

If you are a user who likes to listen to music or audiobooks while slowly drifting off to sleep then Sweet Dreams might be the application that you have been waiting for. Most applications of this kind make use of a timer that shuts down the computer system or application. Sweet Dreams on the other hand is more sophisticated as it slowly reduces the sound volume of the computer system over time, and can perform the other operations like shutting down the device after the set time period ends like all the other tools do.

The volume reduction is beneficial for users who feel irritated by the sound volume after some time of playing as their hearing becomes more sensitive to noise, and those that want to reduce it to fall faster asleep. The portable application controls the system volume of the operating system which means it is compatible with all applications that you run that play the audio.

You can define the total duration of the process, the time the volume reduction should begin, and the target volume in the end. The duration can range from 5 minutes to 120 minutes while the sound volume can be set between 0 and 100%.

The application displays a graph that details the sound volume progression over the entire time. Sweet Dreams can furthermore perform one of the following actions after reaching the end of the selected durection: shutdown, switch off monitor, standby or hibernate.

English users should not be worried by the German homepage of the developer as the application itself has been translated to English.

You can configure the the total time of the operation and the time you want the volume decrease to start. The maximum configurable time interval is 120 minutes for both parameters. The target volume determines the volume at the end of that time frame, and the chart highlights how the volume will change in that period of time on the system. The system can be shut down, set to stand by, hibernate, or to switch off the monitor.

Verdict

Sweet Dreams is a useful program for Windows users who like to fall asleep while playing music or listening to an audiobook. It is easy to configure and use, and since it applies the change to the volume on the system level, it is compatible with any player that you run on your machine.

I now see that you can run the program with the command “sweetdreams.exe -e” to get the English version.

Thanks! My brother sometimes goes sleeping without turning his PCs off. Shutdown timer should help, of course, but sound decreasing can be in help too.
