If the process to unlock your Apple iPhone fails you might end with a so called bricked iPhone that is not working properly anymore. That's probably the worst scenario for any iPhone user who tinkered with the phone trying to unlock it.
Those users might be in for a surprise though because the new official firmware released by Apple seems to be able to resurrect a bricked phone. It seems that the original firmware, the bricked one, is overwritten by this new update.
The Apple iPhone Firmware Update v1.1.3 was applied by putting the iPhone into recovery mode, connecting it to iTunes and restoring / upgrading it. The phone hat to be activated in iTunes afterwards and was working fine after restarting the iPhone.
Gizmodo has a video up showing how they applied the new firmware for the iPhone.
Update: The Gizmodo article and video is no longer available. We have removed it from this article as a consequence.
What you can try is restore the phone using Apple's iTunes software. To do just that connect your phone to your computer via USB and select it once it is listed under Devices in the application.
Click on the summary tab there and then click on the restore option. You may now receive a backup option to backup the phone data to back up all the data on it before it gets restored. All that is left then is to wait until the restoration ends. If everything worked out fine, you have just resurrected your bricked iPhone.
If that does not work, you can still try and install a new firmware on the device.
