Telegram update brings protected content in groups and channels

A new version of the messaging application Telegram is now available for all supported systems. The new version introduces several new features and improvements, some of which are limited to certain operating systems.

Telegram should notify users about the update when it is opened the next time. It may also be updated automatically on some devices.

A new blog post on the official Telegram blog lists all new features. Here is an overview of what is new and improved:

  • Protected Content in Groups and Channels -- Telegram group and channel owners may enable restrictions for all members which restricts message forwarding, the capturing of screenshots, and limits the ability to save media posted to the group or channel. Administrators may enable the feature under Settings > Group Type / Channel Type > Restrict Saving Content. Users who attempt these operations receive the following error messages:
    • Can't take screenshot due to the security policy.
    • Copying and forwarding is not allowed in this group.
  • Clear Chat History from a specific day or date range in all one-on-one-chats. To use the feature, tap on the date bar in the chat window, select the dates that you want to clear, and then "clear history from these days".
  • New button to link desktop devices quickly and a new setting to log out inactive devices automatically after a period of time. Select Devices under Settings to get started.
  • Option to appear as a channel when posting to public groups or leave channel comments. Tap the profile picture next to the message bar to select one of the available channels for posting.
  • New log in verification option through an incoming Telegram call and entering several digits of the phone number that called instead of receiving the code via a text message.
  • Join requests highlight the community they are from.
  • Android users may use global chat themes. This unlocks the themes for individual chats for the entire app. The feature is already available on iOS.
  • Devices with iOS 13 or newer may use Text Recognition which allows users to "quickly select, copy and search". Image recognition happens on the device.
  • Media captions on iOS support bold and italics now.
  • Redesigned contact info on iOS.

The new update of Telegram is rolling out to all client installations.

If you restrict the content of Telegram channel, the content will not be shown to new members?

Super and it surely is very good but my few contacts who installed it don’t nuse it : they use Whatsapp

People still use Facebook too. Some of them don’t care. Then they are surprised when they get hacked, or get a flood of spam calls and emails.

You don’t want your personal info all over the internet, it’s not just the government you have to worry about.

I’ve been using Telegram almost from the get-go. It’s the best thing in messaging, with features which put WhatsApp to shame. I’d rather use an app funded by a known Russian dissident than the shady Signal.

He was never a dissident. It’s just a PR story.

Shady Signal? Wouldn’t agree with that. But yeah compared to WhatsApp, Telegram is on a different planet altogether. Combo of Telegram and Signal is perfect to enjoy best of both worlds.

Hello! Can anyone explain how update Telegram, regarding the following message:
“The adminis of this channel have restricted the saving content. Please update your app to open this chat.”

        Thank you in advance!!

I have tried to subscribe to Telegram many times and using different telephone numbers from different devices utilizing the Android platform and trying from different Telegram client apps, but have never been successful to pass verification when subscribing. After providing a telephone number to the Telegram service when prompted for it initially, the client sometimes indicates that it sends an SMS message with a verification code. The code is never received. My impression is that many times, the verification is not truly sent despite the client software alleging the contrary. Other times one is prompted to send an email using a separate app. I have not tried to send an email for the verification.

It seems that others might receive SMS message(s) with verification code. It also seems that the Telegram service discriminates against subscribers and selectively makes the subscribing process more difficult to impossible.

Telegram seems unreasonably difficult to subscribe to and wherefore use. This service is also one I consequently distrust and would not consider reliable.

Hogwash. Many millions are happily using Telegram having signed up with an SMS. Blame your mobile provider.

Signal is garbage compared to Telegram.

    2. Anonymous said on December 8, 2021 at 5:48 pm

Imagine being the spammer clown saying “signal” when Telegram has features no other messenger, including your beloved signal does to build communities, an alternative social network, with all these group features.

Signal doesn’t even have usernames while Telegram does, do you want to give your phone number to every stranger you meet? lol please, come on.

But I call you clown, mostly because Signal is actually funded by US GOVERNMENT. let’s trust it, just like Tor network!
I mean the same government who wants to control anything you do, how, where, when… but you have to believe they are funding projects to give you more ‘freedom’ and ‘privacy’? that’s a little naïve.

Even with all the red flags like when Huawei engineer exposed Signal has CIA backdoor and how Moxie got 50 million dollars to weaken signal security, and still Signal doesn’t get crapped on publicly..
Actually it is promoted by big name people like Jack Dorsey, who did anything possible when he was on twitter to restrict the way you speak and thoughts… why would someone like that, would want to promote something that supposedly gives you privacy and encryption if they literally wants you out of the internet if you don’t think the same agendas they do? (same logic as why would anyone trust anything funded by Governments).
I mean… I am not even going to include how they can fund these projects because they are not using their money but money that comes from taxes and a bunch of criminal activities by Government to get reach at the cost of not working and keep being parasites, but it is obvious governments want to spy on you and control anything you do.
I mean… if you really believe in garbage like :Internet Freedom” policy and all that crap… well we got a problem.
If you want to believe Moxie is a little angel even if he launched Signal Foundation with $50 million in startup capital provided by billionaire former Facebook higher-up Brian Acton, the Foundation’s executive chair. I mean, you can trust any Facebook employee or former employee if you want.

I mean, do you even trust it? really? Signal Foundation or the old Open Whisper Systems?

You read about Open Technology Fund (OTF), and you will notice is just more propaganda and garbage programs, and how they even admit in a website “Previously OTF-supported Signal (Open Whisper Systems) announced the launch of the Signal Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will continue support for the Signal messaging app, originally developed with OTF funding”

I am sorry but it is incredible how people fall so easily in all these marketing BS schemes about privacy and encryption and all that while Governments literally do these things to make it easy to spy on you.

I am focusing on Signal because of your clownly spam about it. I use but don’t totally trust Telegram. But Telegram has never raised so many flags, the only thing people have against them is how was made by a Russian and it could be a theater the whole issues with Putin.

I mean, you can also ignore how some months ago the Anti-Censorship Community was censored by Moxie and his signal crew because they were asking about Signal simple TLS-in-TLS proxy, it was so badly implemented that it was a risk because it was vulnerable to active probing. So people thinking they were safe in some countries could get in trouble for using it. So Signal decided to ban them for asking about it without getting any answer.

Oh BTW, remember how they didn’t update the Server source code for over a year and they did until people were talking about it?

Maybe you should research a little more, maybe you will understand how not to spam US funded and probably NSA and CIA backdoored tools anymore.

      1. No Thanks, Five Eyes said on December 10, 2021 at 3:41 am

Unless you are personally running the server I would not trust it. By default assume there is a backdoor or an exploit, or worse. Don’t trust the CIA, Putin, Xhinnie the Pooh, the Queen of England, the Swiss banks, Israel, or the Ayatollah. Don’t even trust Bill Gates and Elon Musk or the Easter Bunny.

Yeah, the size of this delirious conspiracy script smearing a competitor is impressive.

This script, by the way, raises a good question – who and why financed the Telegram infrastructure since 2013?

Pavel Durov, allegedly doing this “out of his personal fortune,” did not have any other business. He sold his stake in a russian Facebook clone,, for $300-400 million. But they spent $200 million annually without any profit (

Who, and most importantly why, has ensured the operation of this product for years, which allows to read all chats on the server, except for the “secret” ones, which practically no one uses?
