I guess one of the following situations has happened to anyone who watched divx movies on a computer at one time or the other. If you have experienced a frozen image with the sound still playing normally or pixels that distort the image then you may play a corrupt or broken video file.

Divx Repair is a free program that you can use to fix the errors that you are experiencing automatically.

Divx Repair is a tool that is very simple to use. Just unzip it to your hard drive and run it from the location that you have unzipped it to. The application does not need to be installed and does not alter your system files or Registry. Double-click Divx Repair to start the program. You can add files with the button Add Files which opens the default file browser of the system.

The button Repair files starts the automatic repair process which tries to fix bad frames automatically. Only the bad frames will be deleted not the keyframes which means that you should be able to play the movie without errors from now on. It depends however on the percentage of bad frames. The program cannot restore or recover bad frames into good ones, which may mean that you end up with missing seconds or minutes that you cannot play no matter what.

An error report at the end of the repair displays the amount of bad frames that have been found. If a fix was necessary a new version of the movie will be saved in the same directory as the original movie file so make sure you have enough disk space for that to happen.

Update: The program has not been since 2009, which may indicate that it is not working anymore on newer versions of the Windows operating system. an Alternative is the excellent Avi Fixer which is still in development and available for download at the project website.

The program uses a drag and drop gui that you can use to add your avi files to. It provides a handful of options, like the automatic cutting of bad parts, or a button to rebuild the index of the avi. The original files will be kept by default.
