Microsoft has not picked a final release date for the upcoming Windows 10 feature update yet, but it did pick the release build, and that is moving the next feature update a step closed to the final release.

In a blog post on the Windows Insider blog, Microsoft employee Brandon LeBlanc notes that Microsoft is preparing the Windows 10 May 2021 Update (version 21H1) for release and that the company has picked Build 19043.928 as the final build for the update.  Media for this build can be downloaded from the Insider releases download page.

Insiders who are on the Release Preview channel will have to accept the feature update manually at this point in time by visiting Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. The "Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1" is listed there as an optional update below the check for updates button.

A click on "download and install" downloads the update and installs it on the device. Microsoft notes that work on the update continues even after making the final build available. That is why Beta and Release Preview build devices are already showing Build 19043.964 once all updates have been installed.

New updates will be pushed to Insider channels as Microsoft makes refinements.

The final release date of the Windows 10 21H1 update has not been announced yet by Microsoft. Since it is called the May 201 update, it is likely that it is going to be released in May 2021. It is still possible that it will come out in June 2021, but it seems unlikely.

Devices that run Windows 10 version 2004 or 20H2 will update quickly to the new version, in a process that resembles the installation of a cumulative update. The update process takes longer on earlier versions of Windows 10, e.g. version 1909.

The download will be offered via Windows Update, Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, but also third-party apps such as the Universal MediaCreationTool, Rufus, or UUP Dump Downloader.

Windows 10 version 21H1 is a minor update that introduces only some changes. The next big update for Windows 10 is Windows 10 version 21H2, released later in 2021.

Now You: What are your expectations in regards to Windows 10 version 21H1?

Hope they fixed the search feature. I use “everything” for searches, but it doesn’t find “key words” inside txt files (at least I don’t think it does, not when I tried it).. search built into win has this issue of suddenly closing abruptly, or not searching at all. it’s been that way since ver 2004, i think 1909 was ok. i’m dual booting 1909 and 20h2. what i’d REALLY love for them to fix (which would eliminate my dual boot) is fixing hardlock.sys compatibility (HASP). it will BSOD on any version past 1909, a real drag… ugh…

I don’t know what features that update will have, but I want Microsoft to finally revamp the UI of Windows 10 and make it more beautiful.

    1. Make all these apps like Settings not have a gigantic UI like I have a touch screen when I don’t.
    2. All these apps like Settings to have their icons replaced with colorful icons with depth, gradients so it doesn’t look that boring, dreary and depressing and also not like the placeholder UI that has been on for almost 6 years.
    3. To bring back rounded corners on windows and transparency to each part of the UI and give it overall more depth.

I don’t know when or if that will ever happen, but I can at least wish.

I used Windows Update to optionally update 20H2 to version 2009 (build 19042.964) with KB5001391. The first try gave me error 0x800706be and I had to use Task Manager to close TIworker.exe running up to 25%. The second try was successful.

“What are your expectations in regards to Windows 10 version 21H1?”

That it will sit in the waiting to download queue for many a day.

Whether it’s a feature update or regular monthly update I’m happy for others to be the guinea pigs.

Actually, I am waiting for LTSC 21H2 later this year for a possible migration from Windows 7 to 10.

Fewer upgrade problems than normal. Nothing more nothing less.
Most problems with this update will concern the Windows Hello Multicamera Support.
Maybe some problems with the Windows defender application guard performance (WDAG)

I am still not sure ore the Secure DNS over HTTPS (DoH), System-Wide will be implemented so no thoughts about that.
