The popular file hosting and synchronizing service Dropbox is setting the course for an expansion of their service. While its hosting and syncing offer is popular and well accepted, it lacks a bit in the functionality department when compared to services such as SkyDrive or Google Drive. Both of these services enable users to edit documents online and access a variety of other features to work with files directly on the Internet dashboard of the service.

Dropbox acquired Audiogalaxy just a couple of days ago likely in an effort to ramp up the service's music-related features. Audiogalaxy offers music streaming capabilities that enable users of the service to stream music using web browsers or mobile phones and tablets.

Today news broke that Dropbox continued its shopping tour with the acquisition of Snapjoy, a photo hosting and management service that is brining all of your photos together on all devices you own. The announcement was made on the company blog that Snapjoy is joining forces with Dropbox.

Nothing changes for the time being and users of the service can continue using it like before. New signups are on the other hand not accepted anymore, which has also been the case after Audiogalaxy had been acquired by Dropbox. It is likely that we will see an integration of both services into Dropbox, and then a migration of existing accounts to the service as well.

The acquisition of both companies moves Dropbox away from a service that is offering online file hosting and syncing to a service that is providing with file management capabilities on the Web. There are still two major elements missing, and those are document editing and better online video management options. Will we see additional acquisitions by Dropbox in the near future to fill that gap, or will the company use an internal development process to include those features in its portfolio?

Dropbox is in a good position to become the go-to service for all things cloud related. While it will take some time to include the new technologies into the existing product, it is likely going to increase interest in Dropbox further.

This is great news. Came across Snapjoy soon after they started, and have been waiting for integration with Dropbox ever since.

I only hope they keep the look and feel of Snapjoy.

I think that sometimes it is better to do one thing, and do it very good than expand your services. But I’m sure that Dropbox (like any other company) thinks at profits first and foremost, so that is the reason for their recent acquisitions… I hope they will manage to keep their cloud storage service great as it is now, and not bloat it with all kinds of “facilities”.

Google, Facebook and Dropbox are destroying the web. These mammoths will leave the user without any choice. Their routine practice is to acquire and close.
