I found a very comprehensive list of sites that offer mp3's that can be legally and freely downloaded. The list is neatly categorized which aids the visitor in finding out which sites offer mp3 files that could be worth the download.

The website is run by a reader of my site who is running his own blog called Liquid Parallax which is always worth a visit. Back to the list of mp3 sites. I would estimate that there are about 150 links to websites in categories such as Classic, Compiled Lists, Individual Artists, Historical and Record Labels.

It could take weeks to really visit every site and download the songs that you like. This is probably the best - legal - way to download a lot of mp3's and feed your software or hardware mp3 player with new music. I said probably because I do prefer to save Internet radio streams.

Update: The site listing is no longer available. An alternative is the Free Music List December 2005 that I posted in December 2005. While six years old, it still links to two dozen high quality music resource sites that offer free music to visitors.

Among the listed are legal torrent websites that you can use to download music via Bittorrent sites, free music that the popular shopping site Amazon offers, and several others.

A new site that has not existed in 2005 is Jamendo. It is one of the best free music resources on the Internet. Visitors can listen to thousands of legal mp3 albums online or download albums to their PC. The site hosts more than 300,000 different music tracks at the time of writing, all downloadable for free.

Artists can be supported with donations or by buying records that they have released.

How do you get to the site you’re talking about? I don’t see any links in the article other than all the pesky pop-up ads.

    Frustrating!

    Thanks

Patrick, links that do not work anymore are automatically removed after some time. I have added another resource that you can use.

I find there “The Cure Recording from Toronto 08/09/04” {and some other Cure songs} – and I’m HAPPY!

    Thank you VERY MUCH!
