Vivaldi Technologies released a new snapshot of its Vivaldi browser for the desktop today. The new version, Vivaldi build 2482.13, introduces support for importing and exporting themes.

One of the strong features of Vivaldi is the browser's customizability. From adding or removing menu items, over several options to stack tabs, to automation features. Vivaldi is probably the most customizable mainstream browser right now out of the box.

Themes is another strong feature of the browser. It comes with several default themes, options to install themes from the official themes repository, and to create your own themes right within the browser.

The editor that is included in Vivaldi for the desktop gives users options to change colors, background and other theme related preferences in an easy to use interface.

Colors, for example, let you change background and foreground colors, set the contrast, color overrides, or highlight and accent colors. Background supports setting a local image or picking one of Vivaldi's preset background images.

The functionality has been improved recently, as Vivaldi highlights the background image now in the themes preferences.

The new Vivaldi snapshot introduces support for importing and exporting themes.  The options to do so have been added to the Themes settings page.  The Open Theme and Export Theme buttons are displayed underneath the themes library on the page. To get there, select Vivaldi Menu > Tools > Settings, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-F12.

vivaldi import export themes

You can export the active theme from the library page, and any theme from the editor page. Just select it from the listing in the editor before you hit the export theme button. Themes are stored as zip archives on the local system.

Loading works similarly: just hit the open theme button and pick a zipped theme from the local system to add it to the browser and display it as a preview immediately. Vivaldi displays a preview of the theme and a prompt that gives you options to install it, and make it the default theme of the browser, or to cancel the installation.

Themes that users save may be shared directly with other Vivaldi users. Another option is to upload them to the themes gallery on the Vivaldi website to make them available to others.

Here is Vivaldi's official statement regarding the themes improvement:

Themes have received a massive overhaul. The settings interface has been updated to better reflect everything that’s now included in a theme, with the most noticeable change being the inclusion of the background image in the theme itself. Additionally, you can now import and export themes. At the bottom of the new theme editor, there are two new buttons: “Open Theme…” and “Export Theme…”. Once you have made a theme you are happy with, click the export button to generate a zip file. These can then be shared either directly with your friends, or you can upload it to our brand new Themes gallery and share it with the world. Check out the gallery (see the “get more themes” link in settings) to find a multitude of new themes, ready for easy install, right from the website.

Now You: do you modify themes of your browser of choice?

@Martin: what do you mean by “this version”?
I mentioned the MacOS number just to point out that 2482.13 is not the only number. When I 1st saw you mentioned and I checked my version, it seemed wildly out of date, but clicking on “check for updates” reassured when it said Vivaldi is up-to-date.

So many browsers and forks and there is always something negative about each one, on the case of Vivaldi, while they are some niche but still features that might make the browser of the web easier, the UI makes everything so slower than any other Chromium that makes it hard to love it, it looks nice and has nice fatures, but just load a videos and it will not be the best experience.

I find Vivaldi to be unique among browsers, with its features. The Stable version has never crashed on me and I’ve used it since it came out. Their forums are quite helpful. Good browser. Frequent updates.

I’ve used Vivaldi for a while, and the lack of theme export was annoying. I’d be nice to be able to export, that is locally save settings, as well. For now thouh, the new theme interface is buggy. For example, I could not just type a value in, I had to copy and paste, or open up the drop-down dialog to change the values. Though having choice of hex, hsl, and graphical is nice. It also may change entered values by a number or two, when I saved. It’s a new implementation, it’s a chromium based browser, so that’s normal.

I do wish that the panels, the game, and other features were all modules, i.e. extensions, that could be removed or added, as desired. Which was the the original point.

And unreliable, crashing, buggy. Less niche features and more reliability please.

Well, the closed source UI browser and the slowest for that reason is getting a way to import and export, nice!
