Help2go have published useful information why every Windows user needs  a Linux live CD. First, you can make good use of it if your PC is acting up and you cannot start into Windows at the moment. You can use the CD to access files for example that you really need for a presentation or something else right at that moment in time.

While newer versions of Windows come with rescue options built-in, including repair options right on the disc, it is not the case for many older versions or versions of Windows that come pre-installed. If you forgot to create a recovery disc, Linux distributions may be the best option you have of recovering your version of Windows.

The rescue comes in form of a free Linux live CD which boots from CD and normally does not change a thing on your computer's hard drive. You will have lots of handy tools at your disposal, email, browser, word processing to name a few.

You can then finish your work using the Linux tools and fix the Windows problem later on (probably through re-installation anyway). Simply download one of the free iso files mentioned in the article of help2go and burn it to a CD. Make sure you check it out before the first problem occurs.

Linux to the rescue. Linux is that OTHER operating system that you don’t understand. Linux has gotten the reputation over the years as being for computer geeks only. Linux comes in several versions (distros), each slightly different. Many of those distros have started trying to make Linux more user friendly and visually more like windows (the die hard Linux users don’t like that part). Many of the distros offer a “live” CD that boots the operating system from the CD and makes no changes to your hard drive. The live CD will take several minutes to load, includes a web browser, word processor, email and much more. But here is the beautiful part; it will read your windows files so that you can access your documents, photos and mp3 files that are on the hard drive. If you have a printer hooked up to your computer, you can print your files. If you have a CD burner you can burn your files to a CD to retrieve them from your Windows system.

An external recovery and repair option is always useful to have lying around, especially if the Windows operating system should fail to boot properly. Microsoft has started to ship better repair options with newer versions of Windows though, which can aid you in the repair as well.
