Veoh Video Download

The video portal Veoh is unlike any other video portal on the Internet. One of the main differences between Veoh and other video portals like Youtube is that Veoh is limiting the playback of some of the larger videos on their site to a five minute preview. Veoh asks its users to download the web player beta to view and download the full video. Many users do not like the idea of downloading an external application just for the sake of being able to watch a full length video clip on a video portal.

There is however another possibility that will suite many Veoh users. The Greasemonkey script “Adds a link to download original file for Veoh” makes it possible to download the video right of the Veoh portal without installing third party software to do the same. Once installed the Veoh page will contain a button named Get URL which will display the download link to the Veoh video next to it when pressed. That download link leads directly to the full version of the video on the Veoh servers.

It will download normally just like any other file in Firefox. It will most likely work in download managers as well but this has not been tested.

File sizes can be huge depending on the length of the video. Tests revealed file sizes for Veoh videos of more than 1.5 Gigabytes which might take a while to download considering that the downloads will not be with full speed usually. The average download speed was between 60 and 100 Kilobytes per file from the Veoh servers.

According to the script’s author: “Veoh prohibited the access to original videos by my method since Mar 3,2009.”

  2. Diggits says:

60-100 kb sounds like an enourmous decrease compared to that of the Veoh-software which can vary from 30 kb/s (which mine currently is) to over 80mb/s (which mine was yesterday. Thank you danish fiber <3 )
