We start the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway with a bang. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is the flagship product of Kaspersky and it is up for grabs for five lucky commenters. All you need to do to enter the giveaway is to leave a comment. Please spread the word so that your friends, family and colleagues can enter the giveaway as well).
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 includes the Kaspersky Antivirus components but extends the protection of the computer system beyond that. At the core stands it antivirus and anti-malware engine that is protecting the system from those threats. The Internet Security 2009 suite adds to that a two-way personal firewall, content filtering and data & identity theft protection.
Several new features have been integrated into the 2009 edition of the software. This includes the ability to restore previous system settings after cleaning malware, security ratings for unknown applications, a virtual keyboard to protect against phishing and keyloggers and the automatic access restriction (user data folders) for unknown applications.
Installation of the software suite should not be problematic although it requires the uninstallation of other applications of its kind before the installation can be completed (Multiple firewalls or antivirus programs can interfere with each other). Inexperienced users can and should keep the automatic settings while experienced users can configure the layers of protection manually. It does not make much sense for example to enable the Anti-Dialer module if the user is connecting to the Internet over a network.
The interface of Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 has been redesigned. It is divided into the four blocks Protection, Scan, Update and License.
- Protection: Various protection layers can be analyzed and configured in this entry. It is also providing access to various tools like the creation of a Rescue Disk, a Security Analyzer or Network Monitor.
- Scan: Perform a quick or full scan of the computer system.
- Update: Will check and download updates
- License: License information. Will list the validity period of the application
Inexperienced users will love the automatism of the software program. The initial scan of the system will add automatic rules for most applications that are installed on the system. Kaspersky Internet Security did add applications like Firefox, Thunderbird or Teamspeak to the list of trusted applications which in turn meant that no “Do you want to permit” windows where launched when the application was started.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista. A trial version is available that can be used for 30 days without restrictions.

I was wondering about the level of protection KIS offers against Rootkits.
Sinowal/Mebroot is as of now one of the most dangerous rootkits out in the wild, more so because it’s being constantly updated to combat the recognition techniques deployed by the good guys and of course, due to the fact that it overwrites the MBR and loads or tries to load itself *before* Windows begins.
F-Secure’s BlackLight may help. How does KIS 2009 stand up to it?

To answer some of the questions:
1. The license is good for 1 year
2. The ease of use of this software depends on your experience. Beginners can simply let it automate most of the settings for them which means minimal interaction with the program.
Experienced users can really go into detail. One example. Applications rights can be configured in detail. It all centers around read, write, create and delete rights of specific resources. I will make a few screenshots and add them to the article.
I don’t think Kaspersky is the best AV. but it’s better than A-Square (I got a licens for 1 year, for free :D )

i wanted to install this long ago but it was having a conflict with my uninstalled AVG…. I have uninstalled AVG n still it was detected and would not install. how sad…. i am now using my second and third choices NOD32 and antivir….I like Kaspersky AV because of its reputation always ranking first or second on a AV detection performance test…. kudos!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever read a negative comment about Kaspersky. The product has a solid reputation, and I’d love to use it to replace my Norton, about which you can find an abundance of negativity– just Google “I hate Norton!”
