If you look at the available gadgets for Windows Vista and Windows 7 you notice that most provide the same features like displaying hardware stats, time and date or media related information.
Windows users have to dig deeper to find gadgets that do not belong in a category that is swarmed with the same type of gadget. TWIV, which stands for Timed Web Image Viewer, is such a gadget.
The gadget can be configured to display an image by pointing it to an image url. Obviously, this makes most sense if the image updates in intervals, and not if it is a static image as you can simply download it to your system instead for that or use one of the image display gadgets that don't require an Internet connection.
So, the main purpose of the Webcam gadget for Windows is to display cam images that get updated frequently, or images from other services that push new or updated images to the same address regularly.
This is the intended use of the gadget. All you need to do is enter an image URL, and select the interval that you want the gadget to check and download new images in.
The default interval is set to 9999 seconds by default with the option to change the interval during configuration. The default time span would check for updates every 166 minutes which may be a bit long depending on the type of service you are pulling the image from.
It may be better to use 60 seconds or 600 seconds which would check for updates every minute or every ten minutes instead.
The gadget is compatible with the jpg, png and gif image formats, and will display the image in a 320x240 window on the computer desktop.
TWIV can be downloaded from the developer's website. It is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Note: Microsoft more or less removed gadgets from its Windows operating system. Microsoft retired gadgets in Windows 8 due to security concerns, but there are options to get the functionality back.
The developer website and there specifically the download was up and down regularly. We have uploaded the most recent version of the Webcam Gadget for Windows to our own server. Please note that we don't support the gadget in any way. You can download it with a click on the following link: Twiv.zip
