Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer as of January 2013. The multinational ecommerce company operates in the US and offers localized online stores in select countries such as Germany, the UK, Spain or Canada. The company recently launched its own line of consumer products, the Kindle e-book reader and tablet PC product line, that is complementing its business and binding customers to the store and the company’s offerings.

Amazon has acquired several Internet companies in the past years, notable acquisitions include the Internet Movie Database IMDB, the shopping sites Zappos, Woot or Zalando, and the audiobook provider Audible.

Amazon started as an online book store but branched out into other product categories soon thereafter. It now sells a variety of goods online include software, video games, electronics as well as media, apparel and even food.
