Gog's Winter Sale 2020 has started: here are our picks
PC gaming platform Gog has launched its Winter Sale 2020. The sale runs from December 16, 2020 to January 4, 2021 and features thousands of games that are discounted.
Gog's store is different in several key aspects when compared to major stores such as Steam, Epic Games Store, or Origin. Two of the main differences are that its games are DRM free and that its software, Gog Galaxy, is an optional component and not a requirement to download, install and play games.
You can grab a free game in the first days of the sale. This year, it is Prison Architect that you may add to your account free of charge.
All you need to do is head over to the Gog website, sign-in to an account or create a new one for free, and click on the "Yes, and claim the game" on the frontpage to add it to the account.
More than 3300 games are discounted on the platform in the sale. Here is my personal list of game suggestions that you may be interested in. It would be lovely if you could provide suggestions of your own in the comment section below.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (€15)
The Witcher is an action-adventure game first and foremost, and it has been created by the same company that has brought you Cyberpunk 2077. The Game of the Year Edition is the ultimate edition of the game that includes all extra content that CD Project Red released for the game.
If you like action adventures, it is definitely worth the purchase.
Tip: You can also grab the first two parts, The Witcher: Enhanced Version for €0.89 and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition for €1.69 during the sale.
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number Standard Edition (€3.79)
Hotline Miami 2 is a very dark action game in pixel style. Pixel-style games are not for everybody, but this one may surprise you as it comes with a great soundtrack and action-packed game play.
If you want a quick top-view shooting game, this one may be worth a try.
Tip: you can also grab the first game, Hotline Miami, for €2.19 during the sale.
Master of Magic (€2.49)
I still remember my first play of Master of Magic back in the 90's. It is a grand strategy game released by Microprose, the company that published the early Civilization games as well.
Master of Magic plays similar to Civilization in some aspects. You start humble and need to explore, build and conquer. The game focuses heavily on magic and mythical creatures, and combat is more advanced than in Civilization games.
If you can look beyond the dusty appearance and like 4X strategy games, this one is for your.
King's Bounty: Crossworlds GOTY (€3.09)
If you like turn-based combat games with light RPG elements in a fantasy setting, this game is for you. It is, in my opinion, the best King's Bounty game that has been released up until now (King's Bounty 2 will come in 2021 and may change that).
You pick a class and start humble as always in this game. Defeat monsters, equip your hero, learn spells, develop skills, hire better creatures for your own army, and combat in hundreds of turn-based fights.
Tip: you can get other King's Bounty games during the sale as well, but you should start with this one as it is the most polished version. In fact, the only King's Bounty game missing is the first one released by New World Computing in 1990.
Party Hard 2 (€5.79)
The second dark-themed pixel game in the list, and boy is it a good one. If you don't like parties, this game may be for you as you will crash party after party, trying to kill everyone using numerous traps and methods.
The game features multiple characters to pick from, lots of levels, boss fights, and even local co-op play.
Tip: The first Party Hard is also available for €2.69 during the sale.
Star Wars Games (buy three for an extra discount)
Star Wars games are discounted, here is my personal selection:
- Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (€1.79) -- Arguably one of the best action Star Wars games, Dark Forces II has all the Star Wars vibes that you require. It does not look pretty anymore, but that is to be expected from a game released in 1997. Dark Forces is also on sale.
- Knights of the Old Republic (€2.89) and Knights of the Old Republic 2 (€2.89) -- Roleplaying games with tactical combat with an amazing story and plot twist that will keep you entertained for days of playtime each.
- Star Wars: Rebel Assault 1 + 2 (€2.89) -- Rebel Assault was actually the first CD-Rom only game release. It came out at a time when full-motion video games were the latest trend; unfortunately, it meant that gameplay is very limited. It is a rail-shooter. Still, if you like Star Wars and would like a different kind of game, this may be for your.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (€1.79)
A classic LucasArts adventure game that uses the same mechanics as the company's other early games. In this game, you try to find Atlantis to, once again, stop Nazis from getting there first and using the power of Atlantis against their enemies.
It is a classic point-and-click adventure game with a great story, great humor, and a fantastic setting.
Tip: Other LucasArts adventure games are also discounted, including the entire Monkey Island series, all other Indiana Jones games, the game that started it all, Maniac Mansion, and others.
Now You: Any games that you would like to recommend?
Unreal Tournament 2004, still my all time favorite.

The ‘Combat Mission’ series is outstanding as well.
