Opera 10.60 Beta Released, Fastest Browser Gets Even Faster

Someone must have flipped a switch over at the Opera headquarters in Norway. The developers of the popular Opera browser have accelerated development of the browser over the last months.

The release of the highly acclaimed Opera 10.50 did not seem to have slowed down the developers who have now made available the first beta of the upcoming Opera 10.60.

Opera 10.60 snapshot users can update the browser to the beta release by clicking on the menu button at the top, then Help and Check for Updates.

Everyone else can download the beta of Opera 10.60 at Opera Next.

The new release increases the HTML5 capabilities of the Opera browser. Opera 10.60 beta gains 30 points and 3 bonus points in the beta HTML5 test that we conducted 10 days ago. Opera closes in on Google Chrome which scored 212 points and surpasses the Firefox 3.6.4 browser by 20 points making it the second most HTML5 compatible browser available.

Four new HTML5 features have been added to the beta version of Opera 10.60, they are:

  • WebM support for HTML5 video (demo)
  • HTML5 offline web applications (demo)
  • Gelocation (demo, only partially implemented on Linux at this time)
  • Web Workers (demo)

In addition to those four HTML5 features a fifth, Cross-Document Messaging, received a major update in this Opera release.

The developers have improved further on the speed and compatibility of the browser. Opera 10.60 beta beats the latest dev version of Google Chrome by more than 700 points on our test system (Google Chrome 6, 9003 points, Opera 10.60 Beta, 9743 points) in the Peacekeeper browser benchmark.

It is safe to say that Opera 10.60 is currently the fastest browser with a reasonable market share on the planet. The developers have promised to increase the HTML5 capabilities of the browser in future releases. We keep you posted on these as well. I wish they’d focus for a change on making the thing more intuitive & usable rather than faster.

  2. Thomas says:

Until Lastpass addon is not fully supported under Opera, I’ll stick with FF

It is available (see picture above from my instalation) via panel and bookmarklets. You do miss on some features, but it’s actually very useful. That and Opera Wand, btw.

Point is, CrunchBang, I DONT know what I am talking about because the three times I have tried to use this abysmal browser I found it incomprehensible, impossible, & infuriating, & uninstalled it.But it has about a 45% market share so I suppose I am perhaps the only one who hates it-45%, that’s about right, isn’t it, CB??

    • ygns says:

MikeJ: what can you NOT comprehend in a web browser? Fine, maybe one can’t find a specific button, or the shortcuts are different from [other browser], but “incomprehensible”?

Your argument is pointless: “It’s not the most popular, ergo it’s worthless.” Reassess your value system than comeback with an informed feedback. Or take your queries to the Opera forums.

Whenever I’ve tried downloading, then browsing with the latest versions, they seem to malfunction on me–even crashing dramatically. I hope that this can be repaired by the folks o’er at Opera HQ!

Opera has a very good ad block app… Its in there UNITE called BlockIt. Works very well once you understand that Unite might need UPnP either unchecked for port forwarding or checked if you are lucky enough to have that work. Good email response from the developer of the program BlockIt. I’ve been using Opera for about 1-1/2 months now and have been learning more about the browser and I’m not really missing my firefox even though I keep my nightly firefox up to date. So in order to really get an idea of a new browser one must start Over and learn again.

    @Mike J

Since I don’t feel like being a jerk without no answer here is my answer to you.

All the Firefox, Exploder and Google Chrome funs have no clue about the fact how the most usable features in their browsers were actually invented by Opera. Get statistics, giving the fact that Exploder is the worst browser on the planet it still gets biggest share, what does that tells you?

Just type opera:config in Opera browser and all new world will open to you. One more tip… visit this page (http://www.searchlores.org/indexo.htm) of the late guru of the net and try to learn, it helped me a lot to understand things and I hope it will help you too.

    Regards,
    ChrunchBang
