Stealth Web Page Recorder

Internet Explorer users beware: Stealth Web Page Recorder is a little add on for internet explorer that records every visited webpage including every action on that website like entering passwords, forms, emails and account numbers. The add on can't be spotted in the task manager nor in advanced tools like process explorer, it is a so called BHO - Browser Helper Object.

Windows Vista RC1 available

Despite the latest rumors of postponing the released of the release candidate of Microsofts upcoming Windows Vista operating system a download link for the release candidate was made public earlier this day. Head over to Microsofts official Windows Vista website and grab it while it is hot. The size of the release candidate is 3677 megabytes and available in iso format. You will have to burn the iso to a dvd before you can install the new version.

Download Random Images with SeqDownload

Many websites post random images every time their page is reloaded, webcams come to my mind as well that load a new image once every few minutes. Saving a sequence of images is really painful if you do it manually. You have to click reload, save the image, reload, save the image. SeqDownload is a nice little freeware application that automates this task for you, download the program from the link above and unpack it into a directory of your choice - there is no installation involved, run it right fom the location you unpacked the files to.

bootdisk-2-bootstick

Copy and run Floppy Boot Disks from USB

Ghacks got slashdotted yesterday and I had to enable caching to make the site run fluent as usual. I'am sorry if you experienced troubles connecting to my website, those should be solved by now. When I was installing Windows XP on my new computer that had only SATA drives I had to use a floppy disk to load the SATA drivers because Windows did not have them onboard at that time. I had to buy a floppy drive, floppy disks and create a bootdisk and load the drivers from that disk during setup.

puretext

Copy text without formatting

I sometimes quote websites and do a normal copy paste job to copy the website content to the editor of my blog or into a word processor. Unfortunately this copy job always pastes the original formatting of the original source to the editor as well which means that the text may have a different size, font type or color. It is quite a hassle to remove the formatting of the copied contents to make it look like the rest of your content.

show profile folder

How to compact your firefox bookmarks tab

The length of the bookmarks tab in firefox has been bothering me for a while. It is equal to the length of the largest entry which could mean that it could quickly clutter your interface when you have some sort of subfolder system that I use. One method to overcome this would be to strip every bookmark so that it would never use more than 20 chars, everything else would be cut off. I did that for some time but discovered a way that makes everything so much easier.

stream-video-vlc

How to stream videos on a LAN or Internet

Quadmaster posted a nice guide to streaming video in lan on the techenclave website. All you need is the great media player VLC (video lan client), in a recent poll 36% of all voters on ghacks voted for vlc as the best media player. You need to assign local IP addresses if you have not done so allready, for sake of simplicity I assume the main pc that streams the content has a IP of 192.168.0.1 and the first client pc that recieves the stream has the IP 192.168.0.2.

How to create a data safe

Would you prefer that important data like information about yourself, account numbers, personal documents and the like are accessible all the time from everyone who has access to your computer or that this data is only available to someone with special access ? I would like to give details on an easy way to store your data safely on your computer without wasting lots of time. It may be safer keeping the data in a safe in your appartement but this is not really practicable.

Enhance your desktop with Samurize

The classic Windows desktop looks really boring, you can set a background image, edit some icons and enable some effects. Samurize has actually two benefits. First it is a system monitor, it displays information about your system, information that you specify like free disk space, your current IP address or a weather forecast. Besides that it enhances the desktop by applying a skin to the windows system. Take a look at the two examples below.

The perfect multimedia device

Do you like watching movies on your computer monitor or do you prefer to watch them on your television ? I think most people who answer this question prefer to watch the movies on tv which has many advantages: Bigger Screen, you can watch with more people without feeling crowded around a pc monitor and it has that certain tv feeling that watching on a pc monitor has not.

browzar

Browzar not so good after all

Browzer was widely reported as a web browser that takes privacy and security serious. It seems most websites that "tested" browzer did not do their homeworks and parotted instead what the developers of browzer were claiming. The first thing that strikes me as odd is that Browzer is not really a new web browser but simply an add on of the Internet Explorer by Microsoft. It uses the same engine and identifies itself as the Internet Explorer.

itunes movie store

Itunes Movie Store will be expensive

I always wondered who made the decision to charge the same amount (or even more) of money for a movie download than for a purchase. Why should I pay 9,99$ for a movie download that most likely will be crippled with DRM and come without DVD cover and booklet. Some services disallow that you burn more than one DVD from the download or make it impossible to play the movie that you burned on DVD on standalone DVD players.

Windows Vista Price Leaked

What would we do without online retailers who are quick at adding new products and at the same time confirm the price of the product this way. This time it was amazon.com who added product pages for all Windows Vista versions, which as you might now will be available in seven different versions. Windows Vista Home Basic Edition is the cheapest version of Windows Vista with a price of 199$ and can be compared to the Windows XP home version which also retailed at 199 $.

Three Great Freeware Games

I do stumble upon great fanmade games from time to time and write down a note about those games to remember it and write an article like this one you are currently reading. I discovered three nice freeware games that are worth taking a closer look, their names are: Turrican 4 Funeral, Wings of Fury and Warzone 2100 Resurrection.

netvibes title view

Netvibes Review

Netvibes offers their users a way to create a personalized homepage on the web. I'am using it mainly to display the RSS feeds that I'am subscribed to but Netvibes offers more than that. You can create tabs just like in Firefox and name them, I categorized my feeds this way by giving them names like seo, money and games. You are able to add numerous feeds to every tab plus additional features that come in handy like a bookmarks manager or a todo list.

It is only available for a limted time so hurry up and visit their download pages right away. Only the first 100.000 users will be able to download this version, after that the download will not be available anymore.

Huge High Resolution Wallpaper Website

Mydeskcity is a hugh, and I mean really huge, high quality wallpaper website that is not overloaded with advertisement like most of the other wallpaper websites out there. The only drawback that I could find is that this website is not in english but Chinese (?), at least I think it is Chinese. Navigating it is easy nevertheless: The thumbnails on the main page depict the theme of the category, clicking on one of the numbers above the thumbnail leads to the corresponding page of the category.

Transparent Backgrounds with Chaos Crystal

Chaos Crystal, strange name for a freeware that makes it possible to set a transparency level of every window that is open on your windows system - to be preciser, on your windows 2000 or xp system. Chaos Crystal can be run from everywhere without problems because it does not install itself but simply becomes active when executed.

folders report

Folders Report

Your hard drive is filled to the brim but you don't know why ? You want to free up some disk space on a drive because you are going to need it for some other files that you want to save there ? Windows is not offering many help when it comes to determining which folders are holding the largest files on your hard drives.

Unlocker 1.8.4 available

Did you ever get a message like "Cannot delete File / Folder: It is being used by another person or program" or similar messages when you were trying to delete a file or folder ? The iPod Bomb Incident

This is a funny story I read on the World of Warcraft forums. A guy who is playing World of Warcraft was on his flight from the United States to Canada to meet some of his fellow clan members. He used the toilet on that flight and witnessed afterwards that the stewardesses were acting strangely. Something seemed to keep the toilet from flushing. The guy immediatly thought it was his fault but decided not to tell them because of this embarassing situation.

Lock your Devices with Device Lock

Device Lock allows you to close open USB and firewire ports as well as other device ports that make it possible to run external devices on your computer. With all the live cds and programs that run from USB such connections to the pc have become a greater security risk than ever before. System administrators as well as security concerned end users should disable every means of accessing the pc or running software from devices that could access it.

Relakks Revisited

Relakks had a few problems shortly after their start due to the amount of users that registered the service right after it was introduced. Connections have been really slow and I had no chance to further test the service and write about my experience with it. I'am currently writing this article while being connected to Relakks and everything is working fine so far. I'am able to open websites and surf the internet without problems. I'am able to check my email and download files using Relakks.

A previous version of Internet Explorer 7 will automatically be uninstalled prior to the installation of the new release candidate 1 version.

Getting Things Done Gmail Firefox Extension

The title could be a bit misleading, GTDGmail is a firefox extension that adds additional functionality to your gmail account. Getting Things Done is a productivity concept that aids you in organising your tasks: "a person needs to move tasks out of their mind and get them recorded somewhere. That way, the mind is freed from the job of remembering everything that needs to be done, and can concentrate fully on actually performing those tasks"

firefox do not track

Track Me Not Firefox Extension

We all witnessed AOLs bold move to offer a public download of 20 million searches that more than 500k of their users had conducted over a period of three months. The backslash from the internet community and the media was enourmous and as I expected AOL quickly fired three of its employees including CTO Maureen Govern. This does not help the 500k users whose searches are now public accessible.

Funny Error Messages

Error Messages - I hate them with a passion. Especially if they are not helpful at all or even tragic. Members of the Dailtywtf forum 2 compiled a list of funny messages that were either a result of a search on the internet or a error message from an operating system or application. I don't think the person who recieved the message thought it was that funny, for everyone else it is..

Page Style to Tab Firefox Extension

Page Style to Tab is a really useful Firefox extension that displays the tabs that are open in the style of the page. This is helpful because it is so much easier to distinguish the different tabs. You are able to configure this extension further by choosing if the colors of the current website should be displayed only in the tab or the complete browser.

low disk space warning

Disable Low Disk Space Warnings in Windows

Windows popups a balloon tip with a "Low Disk Space - You are running out of Disk Space" warning everytime a hard drive goes below 200 megabytes of disk space. This can get pretty annoying if you have a lot of data on the drive and your disk spaces goes regulary below 200 megabytes on it. There is however a very easy way to turn this message off, it involves a registry setting.

Transparent TV from Sony

It seems that Sony is still able to produce innovative products. I read that this one is not totally new but it is the first time I see something like that. They seem to be using a projector at the back of the transparent material (glass ?) to display the image. The speakers seem rather big for this television, you will need lots of free space to place the tv in a room.

search with

Search With Firefox Extension

It is time for some new Firefox extensions and the first one that I would like to introduce is called Search With. The Firefox extension adds a Search With option to the right click menu. To use it you select a text, right click afterwards and select Search With which opens a submenu that allows you to select a search engine to search for the selected text.
