Google does not really offer portable versions of the company's Google Chrome web browser for download. Chromium, the browser that Chrome is based on, is available as a portable version.

It is possible to run Google Chrome as a portable version but updating is not straightforward as there are not many solutions out there that automate the updating somewhat.

Chromium users on the other hand have a wide range of programs at their disposal to update the Chromium browser automatically.

Tip: it is possible to block automatic updates of Chrome.

Chrome Portable Updater

Chrome Portable Updater is a portable program for Microsoft Windows systems that downloads portable versions of Google Chrome and updates existing portable versions of Chrome.

The Windows interface language determines which portable version of Google Chrome is downloaded by the application.

All you need to do is the following:

  1. Download Chrome Portable Updater from the Deskmodder website.
  2. Extract the downloaded archive to your system.
  3. The program extracts the portable versions of Chrome into folders under the root structure. You may want to move the folder to the desired location.
  4. There are two executable files in root (unfortunately with German filenames).
    1. Chrome Updater x86-x64 Lang_EN Einzel Ordner.exe extracts the selected Chrome channel version to its own folder, e.g. Chrome Dev x64. You may use it to create up to 8 different Chrome portable folders to run them individually (great for testing).
    2. Chrome Updater x86-x64 Lang_EN Nur Chrome Ordner.exe extracts the selected channel version into the Chrome folder (thus replacing any version that exists in that folder already).
  5. In other words: if you plan to use different Chrome editions, run the executable mentioned under 4.1, if you just want one Chrome edition, run the exe in 4.2 instead.
  6. The application displays download buttons for all Chrome channels and supported Windows architectures.
  7. Select the one you want, and wait for the download to complete.

All files are downloaded to a folder in the directory you executed Chrome Portable Updater from.

Windows users who prefer to use the command line can do so as well: just append the following parameters to the application name to run the download from the command line or batch files:

  • canary86 == Chrome x86 Canary
  • canary64 == Chrome x64 Canary
  • dev86 == Chrome x86 Developer
  • dev64 == Chrome x64 Developer
  • beta86 == Chrome x86 Beta
  • beta64 == Chrome x64 Beta
  • stable86 == Chrome x86 Stable
  • stable64 == Chrome x64 Stable

Example: C:\"Chrome Updater x86-x64 Lang_EN Einzel Ordner.exe" canary64 to download the 64-bit Canary version to its own folder.

Now You: Do you run portable browser versions?

    When running the installer have to check the box that says “a portable profile for each version”, then hit “script folder” or desktop. Otherwise it will just run the local profile of your regular chrome that’s installed on your computer.

    it’s not truly portable as it leaves a “user data” folder in c:\…\user\appdata\local\google\chrome

    Ok, thanks:)

    Does someone know whats different between https://chromium.woolyss.com/ and https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?prefix=Win_x64/ ? The last one releases versions many times a day…

    Norton also detect Chrome Portable Updater as virus…

    I just love Chromium Auto Updater 1.8, see; https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/chromium_auto_updater.html

    The only problem is that I can only get it to work with 32-bit version of Chromium. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know it came both in 32-bit & 64-bit before now, but the 64-bit link was dead:(

      That’s a False Positive message, because AutoIt was used to compile.

    Can’t find the EN version on the page.

      They removed the EN version and created a single universal version. Just download it from the site.

    No, I prefer real installs.

    I do use a portable version of one application, though — the Windows version of VeraCrypt. I use VeraCrypt to support an encrypted partition on the USB stick I carry on my keyring, and keep a portable copy of VeraCrypt on the unencrypted partition so I can easily access the encrypted data if I need to do so from a Windows machine.

    There’s also the PortableApps version, which updates automatically if you use also the PortableApps Platform.

    Does it use the same profile for all portable version or is every portable version with its own separate profile folder?

    I kinda wish there was an installer for Chromium x32/x64 that can get automatic updates at least once a week, doesn’t have to be ever hour or every 24 hours.

    The ones I’ve tried are either barely working or abandoned.

      This. I’ve tried all the ones I could find. Basically all you can do is go to https://chromium.woolyss.com/ and grab a new installer. I use the portable chrlauncher version on a thumb drive, but prefer the install version on my desktop.

      ChrLauncher (https://github.com/henrypp/chrlauncher) does that…

      # Check for new Chromium version once in X days (integer):
      #
      # 2 -> check updates once in a X days (default)
      # 0 -> disable update checking
      # -1 -> force update checking
      ChromiumCheckPeriod=7

        I came here to suggest this :)
        Chromium > Chrome. If you know how to use a PC there are absolutely zero reasons to pick Chrome over Chromium.
