Update: The browser extension is no longer available. There does not seem to be a comparable extension available for Google Chrome at this point in time. Check out the best music streaming extensions for Chrome for some music related add-ons for the browser that you may find useful.

Extension.fm is a browser extension for the Google Chrome web browser to play music in the browser comfortably and easily.

The add-on for the Google Chrome browser basically crawls every page that you visit for mp3 links, and displays the number of mp3 found as part of its icon. The icon is displayed in the main Chrome toolbar, so that it gives direct indication in regards to found mp3 tunes on the active website.

A click on the icon opens a small overlay window with controls to play one, some or all songs found on the website. The music player of the extension offers basic controls like changing the music volume or pausing and stopping playback.

That alone would probably be reason enough for some users to call it comfortable. But that's only one feature of Extension.fm. Even more interesting is the overview of music that it adds automatically to the queue.

The extension lists music by source, artist, albums or songs, with options to play songs again right from the interface. Take a look at the video to see how easy it is to use the extension to play music.

The extension is currently in private beta. Users can request an invitation code, it took several days before we received ours. The extension does not work properly on all sites, it fails for instance on Jamendo or Sixeyes (where it recognizes the songs but cannot play them).

The developer has created a Google Group where users can discuss the extension. This is probably the right place to report sites that are not working correctly.

Update: Ex.fm is now out of beta, which means that everyone who is interested in the service can sign up for a free account to try it out. The developers have added iPhone and Android apps as well to their service.
