Create thumbnail sheets for image folders on your hard drive
A thumbnail sheet, or contacts sheet or image index, is a single image that displays thumbnails of all images in a particular folder.
You may have come across these thumbnail sheets when downloading image collections on the Internet.
The main purpose of these sheets is to provide you with a quick overview of all the images stored inside the folder.
You can create thumbnails sheets for your image collection, or put them on image CDs or DVDs that you burn so that they act as an index of sort for all the images on it.
Snap2Img is a free portable software for the Microsoft Windows operating system that can create these thumbnail indexes for you.
Once you have downloaded Snap2Img to your local system and extracted it to a folder on your hard drive, you can start the program right away. It displays a configuration dialog to you that you can use to configure every last detail of the thumbnail sheet that you want to create.
You can leave the default values if you like or if you are in a hurry, and they should work well for most.
What you do need to do is pick a source folder, and select whether you want only that folder crawled, or all subfolders as well.
Once you have made that decision, you can click on preview to see how the newly created image index will look like. If you like what you see, you can hit the create and save button to save it to disk.
It is furthermore possible to modify the width and height of each individual thumbnail, to change the number of thumbnails per row, and define aspect ratio related settings.
And if the image collection is large, you can configure it to automatically create multiple thumbnail sheets.
The spacing, text and styling tabs allow you to modify how the image index looks like in the end.
- Spacing defines the spacing between each thumbnail -- in width and height -- and the page margins.
- Text allows you to add header and footer text, and to make a decision whether you want file names to be displayed or not.
- Styling finally enables you to change the background color, add a background texture or image, and to change the design of each thumbnail.
The program ships with presets that you can load that change the configuration automatically. You can also save your custom configuration as a preset so that you can load it whenever you want to make use of it.
The creation or preview of the thumbnail sheet may take a moment, depending on the images that need to be scanned by the application.
Verdict
Snap2Img is a handy program that enables you to create thumbnail sheets in a matter of seconds. While you may spend some time initially customizing the output, the option to save it as a preset ensures that you do this only once. All in all a well-designed program that provides you with lots of customization options.

The only real good option is the batch modus. You can easily create these Sheets with irfan, but you can not create a batch. I will try that. Thanks for that.
I had a crazy collection that I never thought could be indexed in sheets.
All the RGB colors (using imagemagick) and indexed into proper sheets now I’ve got something useful.
Thanks for the great find.

I like that it’s portable, it has decent options, and it created the image fairly quickly.
Nice one, thanks.
Thank you for this article as well as other ghacks.net advice. The Snap21mg is exactly what we needed for our huge archives of photos. The article was written clearly and convincingly.
