26 Internet Websites That You Have Not Heard About, But Should
Every Internet user knows Facebook right? Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft and Twitter are also fairly common. But have you ever heard of Jinni, Joongel or Jangle? No? Then read on to find out what they, and 23 more sites have to offer.
It is surprising that you cannot find a single site on the Internet that collects those unique, rare websites. You find the occasional top list that is usually outdated, with half the sites down for good, but no service that's maintaining a list of the Internet's top sites.
Maybe there is such a service, but if it is it is damn hard to find. I first thought Delicious or other directories or bookmarking services could be used for the discovery, but they are polluted that it is hard to find the gems among the thousands of sites.
The following 27 sites are unique and wonderful. You may have heard about some of them before, but I'd bet that you will discover at least a few gems among the services and sites listed below.
Recommendations
Recommendation engines are similar to search engines. The main difference is that they will recommend something to you based on your input.

I can recommend Tastekid to. It is very useful to discover new things. But it is wrong that it discovers things which are like, what you like. It shows you things, you might like, based on things other people, who like things you like, like. xD
I hope you got it. ^^
You guys hear of http://www.formvote.com ?
under search engines, you may want to add:
logless.com – as the name states, the site does not keep search logs.
pipl.com – for searching for people

Best site in the universe…
http://www.dailyrotation.com
Never heard of them
I’ve heard of some of them. I’d say most of them are unheard of for a very good reason…they aren’t very good. For example, whatshouldireadnext.com is far better than tastekid.
infoplease.com is far better than the birth year site. Just select your year and it’s all there at your fingertips, rather than having it typed out along with nonsense that you already know, like stuff that wasn’t invented yet.
Jinni suggested 2700 movies from the detailed criteria I put in. I looked at the first page, saw a cloud of images(bad), noticed that maybe ONE of them was vaguely related to my criteria(worse), so didn’t bother to look at the other 2680. When the results popped up in a ridiculous image cloud, I wouldn’t have bothered even if they had been more accurate. If I’m looking for an ordered list, I don’t want a meaningless cloud of information.
At musicovery, I popped “Diana Krall” in the search box. What did I get back? “Diana Krall.” Um…yeah…that’s it? /I/ can think of 3 artists off the top of my head, but this site can only come up with the very name I put in the box? It’s not like Diana Krall is some obscure, totally off-the-map singer of tibetan folk tunes or something. Last.fm recommendations is far, far superior.
Finally, I looked at the Best Page in the Universe. Okay. If you say so. Not remotely humorous to me. Comes closer to “worst” than “best.” There are lots of funny websites, but this isn’t one of them.
After those 5, I decided I’d skip the others with which I was unfamiliar. No offense, but 5 strikes and yer out.
But kudos for suggesting alternativeto.net, which is a fantastic site.
Thanks for your review. I can understand your position. About Musicovery. The search box suggestions only display the artist(s) that match the search. If you perform the actual search you notice that related songs and artists are presented to you. You probably have stopped right at the search box. I suggest you give it another try.
You’re right, after performing the search, I was presented with about 6 alternatives…which was unfortunately unimpressive. Stan Getz? Nah. Billie Holliday? Not really, since I’d only list /contemporary/ jazz singers. Got a couple of which I was unfamiliar so popped one’s name in the search box to listen to her, hit search, got…nothing. Frozen. Went nowhere.
As I said before, imo, Last.fm recommendations is far superior.
Really I never met most of them before. Good collection of data.
The best page in the universe link is broken.
You are right, fixed. Thanks for letting me know.
