RSS Feeds are slowly taking the place of the good old bookmarks at least when you take a look at how computer geeks use the Internet. Not everything can be managed with RSS Feeds though and bookmarks are still an important way to keep track of interesting websites. The major problem is that bookmarks do not get verified automatically after adding them to the browser. No browser yet supports the feature to automatically check the bookmarks. (I think a Firefox add-on can do that)
AM-DeadLink is a third party software that can check the bookmarks of all major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Mozilla) as well as url files, comma separated and tab delimited files. The Internet Explorer bookmarks are discovered automatically while all others have to be manually selected from the hard drive. The selections will be remembered in the future.
The main purpose of AM-DeadLink is to check all bookmarks. Error codes and additional information are displayed during and after the check and the dead bookmarks can be checked manually by opening them in the default browser or viewed internally. Favicons can be downloaded optionally if desired during the check.
The software can also search for duplicates in the list of bookmarks and delete those duplicates. The duplicate bookmarks can be deleted automatically by the program or manually by the user.
The program is pretty easy to use and gives the user enough freedom to make the important decisions. A great way to check all the bookmarks. It would be nice if there would be a way to check bookmarks of all browsers and sync them afterwards.

Do you know of a tool that will do this for online bookmarks such as delicious?
I had always used this in the past and liked it, but not sure how it would work with Firefox 3 given the way it handles bookmarks now. I suppose you could export as an .html file, check that with AM-link checker, delete all your bookmarks in FF3 and then import them from your cleaned .html file – is there an easier way in FF3 or am I missing something painfully obvious?
neither Am-deadlink version 3.2 or 3.3 Beta 1 will check bookmarks directly in Firefox 3.0.
Yes, it’s really not a feature in any of the major browsers, but I do remember clearly (and fondly) that it was indeed a function of one of the very early Netscape versions. (I’m old and/but have a good memory!)
Isn’t it odd how *really* useful features sometimes vanish into cyberspace as if they’ve never existed?
