Most Popular Google Chrome Themes

I have to admit that I'm not a user who likes to change the default theme of a web browser. Not because there are no cool themes out there for my browsers, but mostly because I do not really care how my browser looks like design wise. But themes are very popular and I certainly can understand users who install a new theme in their web browser. This could be to support a sports club, your car, home town or favorite designer in the world.

For the Google Chrome browser, the Chrome Web Store is the address to visit when you are thinking of installing a new theme. When you compare installations of themes to extensions in the store, you will notice that themes appear to be more popular than extensions. Two themes already broke the one million installation mark with several closely behind. When you look at extensions, you won't find a single extension with that many installations.

One reason for that could be that themes are not serving a specific purpose like extensions do. With themes, it comes down to taste only and not functionality, as they do not modify or add functionality to the browser. Another reason that comes to mind is that themes are usually future proof while extensions might stop working after a browser update.

When you open the first page of the popular Chrome themes page at the web store you will notice that the 16 themes listed there are installed by more than 10 million users. Only four of the top 16 themes are brand based. The number one spot Porsche theme, number five Dolce & Gabbana, number twelve Vivienne Westwood and number fourteen Ratchet & Clank Future 2.

Generally speaking, I’m surprised — in the good sens of the word — how much aesthetics counts nowadays, as opposed to an era where efficiency seemed to prevail. Skins, scripts participate in the like of users for an application, especially among the youngest, but not only. Here I appreciate, sometimes, the ability to modify the “look” of a GUI, but I just cannot imagine changing once a day, not to say once every hour (like desktops) !
