Don't you hate that boring Windows XP boot screen? Would not it be nice to have a great skin for that screen instead? If you answered the questions with yes Bootskin may be exactly what you are looking for. The freeware makes only temporary changes which means that after uninstallation all settings are back to default value.

There is no use for bootskin if you do not have graphics that you can use. Wincustomize has a bootskin section with more than 3800 bootskins that can be sorted in many ways. The most popular skins for example are listed on the site if you chose downloads overall and Desc from the search field without entering a search term.

The freeware Bootskin is easy to use. At start it displays a list of all available skins and you simply select one from the list with the option to preview the skin and then apply it if you like it.

Update: Bootskin is now also available for the Windows Vista operating system. You can download both versions of the boot graphics changer from the Stardock website.

Update 2: Stardock is making available both the XP and Vista version of Bootskin, but without support or any guarantees. The programs are more or less provided on an as is basis without any guarantees that they are still working. The developers note that the programs are not compatible with Windows 7 or newer versions of the Windows operating system.

The website offers hundreds of bootskins for Windows XP and Windows Vista that users can download from the Stardock website to change the default boot logo and screen to a newly downloaded skin. The company is also making available a pdf user guide that explains how to use install boot skins using the program.

Update 3: Windows 7 users can take a look at the free Windows 7 Boot Screen Editor which offers to change the operating system's boot animation.

Update 4: The software mentioned under update 3 is no longer available. Use the free Windows 7 Boot Updater instead which offers a similar feature set that you can use to change the boot screen logo of your Windows operating system.

When I first got my New PC it came with “Boot Pirated XP” It rocked. I have a legit copy of XP Corp (nice to have a girlfriend that is a PC tech lol) I had to format my pc and lost the boot skin, been looking everywhere for it.

I Like these they add that extra touch of custamzation to ones PC.
I have so far changed my login screen, boot screen, and shut down screen.

    Among many other customazations.
It makes your “Personal Computer” truelly yours.

Never thought of the neccesity, but it’s rather a quirky idea. Guess I’ll give it a try…
