Download Windows Vista SP1 RC1

The registry tweaks to download previous versions Windows Vista Service Pack 1 do not longer have the desired results because Microsoft is already distributing the release candidate 1 of Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. The old keys that have been added to the Registry previously have to be removed and new keys have to be added.

The release candidate of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 should then be available via Windows Update. It might be that you will have to download some prior updates before the Release Candidate becomes available. It should be noted that this is only working on English editions of Windows Vista unless you tweak the Registry on non-English Vista editions to make Vista believe that you are using an English Vista.

Download the file Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Hack and unpack it to your Vista system. Executing the file will remove the old Registry keys that are no longer needed and add the new ones.

Another option would be to open the file in a text editor and manually remove and add the keys to the registry. Restart your computer afterwards and visit Windows Update. You will most likely be prompted to install three minor updates before you will see the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in the list, those are:

  • Update for Windows Vista (KB935509) – v1.008
  • Update for Windows Vista (KB938371) – v1.028
  • Update for Windows vista (KB937287) – Build 6001.17052

Make sure you restart your computer after each update even though you will not get a prompt to do that.

Now you will see Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 – Build 6001.17052 in the update list. Download and install it normally to update your system to Service Pack 1.

This is off the topic but I couldnt find a suitable place to leave this message. First of all ur blog is wonderful but why dont you support your topics with images? any server difficulties? In my opinion related images give your site a good vision. Just my 2 cents.
    Keep up your good work.

  2. Martin says:

Cihan I use screenshots on many occasions but not always. I know that they are nice for the eye but they also increase loading times.

  3. Phil says:

    Hi , im little confused.
When will we be able to download this sp1 rc1 from microsoft website?
I tryed but it has only relnotes.

  4. shyden says:

Hiya people, i recently had the SP1 BETA installed and wanted to upgrade to the RC1 using the hack you have provided here but it is not working, please bear in mind i have removed the sp1 BETA already before trying to download and install the sp1 RC1. have microsoft actually released it yet or is it due for release soon? *confused it should work*

  5. shyden says:

OK ignore that last message, its finally showed up :D just kept checking for updates and it finally came up lol, Microsoft for ya lol

  6. Sean says:

Man the download is tedious for this, always stalling out, may have to torrent it up if its around.

  7. Sean says:

Getting 0×80092004 Failed to download package, but only at 12%, deleted download files, it went fine, and boom stopped at 12% again, failed to download. I wonder if microsoft has caught on and is blocking people from getting the whole package, because I have no security enabled, and even took my router out just to be sure the firewall I disabled isnt blocking it, lol. not up on torrent yet, and the one I saw said 3 day trial???? maybe the guy is goofy.. oh well.

  8. Bobby says:

Hi Guys. I’ve just downloaded and installed the RC version of SP1. It all installed great, having used the provided hack on this page. However, a warning and plee for help… It has reset activation, now saying I need to activate in 3 days. I have tried activating, but of course it won’t let me activate my (legit) copy of Windows Vista Business again. I could call Microsoft, but no doubt they would say I shouldn’t have access to the service pack in the first place. Any idea guys on how to fix this?

  9. Same here…I just got through uninstalling the RC1 but it has messed my (legit RETAIL) copy of Vista Ultimate up as well, saying I have until 10/15/2008 before it shuts down from an evaluation period and has started a 30 countdown as well..LOL wow..buncha BS, eh?

Now the only real choice I have is to back up all my stuff and reformat. :(

I’m done with this SP1 RC1 Beta garbage!

Figured something like that would happen, Microsoft always trying to add some sorta extra spyware/antipirated copy software to peoples PC’s.

Wouldn’t be surprised if thats most of all of what the service pack is for…to make everyone revalidate their Vistas. I mean come on, Vista is already packed full of that junk as it is..hard drive constantly working overtime means shorter life span even if you turn off indexing and Windows Defender…I have a 3 ghz PC and with a good PSU and it’s still slowed down drastically by Vista

Thanks M$! For less than nothing!

  10. Bobby Collins says:

Yes agreed, Microsoft lulled me into a false sense of security, with the beta release of SP1 that I tried only a few days back. That puts it into a ‘evaluation mode’ but keeps working till at least June 08 (from what I read elsewhere). This would be fine, as the public release of SP1 will be long before this, and the literature I read from MS said that the legit SP would remove the beta and remedy this problem.

But the RC is completely different. They’ve released this one with malicious intent to those who aren’t part of the core testing program, I think. You have to wonder why MS have done this now – I know we’re not suppose to have the RC1 or beta releases of the SP, but at the end of the day if they’re going to distribute it in a ‘hidden form’ through Windows Updates, they most know that the public are going to find out and get to it. My copy of Vista Business is legit, and now it is screwed by MS for me daring to try out the RC of their SP, when I could have given them valuable feedback. What idiots they can be!

Looks like a Vista reinstall is probably on the cards for me as well…..

  11. Douglas Houserman says:

So, you would recommend not installing this?

  12. Bobby says:

My advice would be to avoid this release candidate whole heartedly, until someone comes up with a clear crack / hack on how to stop the ‘3 day activation’ problem.

I managed to get rid of this SP update using the system restore utility built into Windows – fortunately I won’t be having to do a reinstall of the whole OS as activation is in happy status now.

  13. TechGuyBoy says:

Everything was a success but YOU MUST UNINSTALL THE SP1 BETA FIRST!!, you have it wrong in the post, you are saying that you can update from sp1 beta to sp1 rc and you CANNOT.

    Thanks Anyways

  14. Bobby says:

I’m afraid I have to disagree, based on my given experience with this. To explain my uses of the Service pack beta and the RC, they have been installed on completely serperate machines. I didn’t outline this in my last post, but I installed the beta of SP1 on my work machine a few days back (Vista Busines x86). My install of the release candidate is on my home PC, with Vista Business x86 running as well. My home PC had NO versions of the service pack installed on it previously, yet it still got royal screwed up. I would not upgrade from a beta service pack to an RC without trying to remove the beta first….

We seem to be having different experiences with this unpredictable service pack release candidate!

  15. Nick says:

Bobby, as far as the RC1 making your activation reset… As you may or may not already know, activation resets like this happen in Vista due to an accumulation of “hardware” (read hardware, driver, system config in general, etc.) changes to the system. This a part of the lovely WGA system designed to stop you from imaging a Vista install from one PC to another. So it could be that you had already accumulated several “hardware” changes to whatever log this info is stored in and the RC1 install just pushed you over the edge. Gotta love M$ and their WGA which punishes the legit users of their products in order to try and preempt those who may try to take advantage of them.

  16. Bobby says:

    Hi Nick.

I’m well aware of these mechanisms in place, and this is the original install with no hardware changes. The only thing I can think is that it is a license from my Action Pack. For those on here not aware of the Action Pack, it is a offering from Microsoft to ‘registered partners’ and higher that gives access to a considerable amount of software for a low annual fee.

The 10 Vista business licenses included with it should be completely normal – they should behave (to my knowledge) like the licenses sold under the MS open license program.

This is the only differential I can think of though, otherwise it is a complete mystery as to why I had this problem.

Any further input, and anyone else who has suffered from this problem I’d be grateful to see posted on here. I assure you it is a legit issue though, and I’m not a crazy fool!! :)

  17. Invisible says:

hi, i’ve got a c*acked copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (x64). If I install the SP 1 RC 1, will activation get f**ked up?

    10x for the help :)

  18. Justin says:

Hi Guys, I installed RC1 and my whole system got messed up. No control panel icons, no aero. Cant even see the activation (Windows Key+Pause) window from anywhere (keypress, msconfig or my computer > properties)? Any ideas. I have uninstalled RC1 and everything is back to normal though.

  19. John L. Galt says:

I followed the steps exactly as was required – this is a new install of Vista Ultimate Retail upgrade from Oct 21, and I had no SP1 betas in this install at all.

However, I ma receiving an error code 80070005 – which, via Google, means that I don’t have the required permissions.

Strangely enough, though, this is a near default installation – I have not tweaked anything using any of the tweak programs available for Vista, nor have I disabled UAC at all. And yet, this error.

The last time WU had this sort of an update error it took several days to figure it out. And, in the end, I never really *did* figure it out – suffice it to say, though, I am still RC1-less.

  20. Sean says:

Hey, move on over to betanews.com and look round, the public rc is around, and its the only one to date that has installed AND downloaded for me. Works great!

  21. John L. Galt says:

Nah, I forgot to post back – I simply restarted the install and it completed this time – now running SP1 v0.668.

A few minor annoyances for right now, but I ma still testing it.

  22. Jeff Edberg says:

I have tried several times to install SP1 rc1, but the installation fails. When I download the file driectly from MS, it goes through and hour of install then fails. Via MS Windows Update, I ran your .bat file, then went to Windows Update and started the install. All looks well until I get an error code 80073712. I have Vista Business, did not install the beta sp1, and am dying to get a more stable Vista. Any ideas?

  23. shyden says:

Just to let you know, i downloaded the service pack using this hack since the thread started, i have just done it again today on another persons pc and i can confirm …

    IT IS STILL WORKING :D

  24. John L. Galt says:

I had to uninstall it – for some reason after installing the SP1 RC1 my system took an inordinate amount of time to boot – 5-7 minutes versus usually no more than a minute pre SP1. Same thing on shutdown.

As soon as I uninstalled the SP1 my boot times went back to normal.

  25. shyden says:

That a new one on me… I’ve heard of it de-activating windows, oads of features suddenly dissapearing and the dreaded BSOD after install but not that… it obv didn’t install correctly.

Well its due to be released in the first quarter on 2008 so we havn’t got that long to wait.

I have many guinea pigs i keep installing this service pack onto and i will keep ou updated on its results.

if you need any help dont hesitate to ask…

if you have windows live messenger you can add me on that ssteberis@hotmail.co.uk

  26. John L. Galt says:

Hmm, you think so? I have access to another system, but was loathe to try it on that system for fear of the same thing happening.

But, now that you mention it, I do believe there was a problem installing it the first time, and after a reboot I had to restart the installation it hung somewhere in the middle of either downloading it or installing it….

I suppose I will have another go at it sometime in the next week.

    BTW – added you.

  27. shyden says:

Ye. One thing i can say I have learnt from Microsoft is that thier software is quite unpredictable.

I’m always one for never giving up and messing about with thier software so when things mess up, i just do it again… and again… and again… untill i get bored lol

  28. Invisible says:

well I just installed SP1, and now Control Panel won’t open [found a way of opening it :)], and the Properties window won’t open too :(

I’ve tried removing the SP with System Restore but it isn’t working too :/ anyone knows how I can remove it?

    Thanks

  29. Bucfan says:

I installed the Releaser Candidate, sort of.

It goes through the whole install. All 3 steps. Then it tells me it was not installed and it is reverting to the previous version. What is that about?

  30. Juicy says:

I hope someone can help me. I downloaded and installed the update. It messed my computer up a lot. Everything was slow boot time was 10-20 minutes. My computer is brand new, I have a 64 bit processor and 4gb ram(but I only have 32bit windows as of now) so I restored windows to the way it was previously and told myself I wouldn’t make the mistake again. I woke up in the morning and it was install again because I forgot to turn auto updates off. So i restored windows to the previous form again and turned updates off. Now I have 7 updates ready to install but everytime I install one it asks to reboot my computer and when I reboot the installation of sp1 starts. Is there a way to delete the downloaded update? It is sitting in my windows update waiting to be installed. I want to delete what has been downloaded…

  31. John L. Galt says:

@Invisible – System Restore is ***not*** the way to do it – you still have the files there and will likely hose your system if you cannot restore *back* to after the SP1 install.

To uninstall the SP1, you go to Control Panel –> Programs and Features –> Installed Updates (left hand navigation area) and then select Service Pack (KB936330).

See http://www.windowsvistaplace.com/how-to-uninstall-vista-sp1-beta/windows-vista-tips for a more detailed explanation.

@Bucfan – haven’t seen that one before – did you try installing it again?

@Juicy – you need to hide that update. Go to Windows Update, search for updates, then when it lists all the updates, right click the Service Pack update and select Hide select updates. Then install the rest and then turn on automatic updates again. Also, if you are using System Restore to remove the update, don’t – use the instructions I posted above to *remove* SP1.

@all – I tried the SP1 a second time, and I had the same experiences as Juicy – absolute terrible slow down in boot time and shutdown time, and various other issues as well. I have uninstalled it a second time and will not install RC1 again.

  32. shyden says:

NO! you will have to install it first then remove it. if after you have removed it, it re-appears in windows update. just right click it and choose hide update. this will stop it being automatically installed when auto updates are turned on.

  33. John L. Galt says:

Shyden wrote “NO! you will have to install it first then remove it. if after you have removed it, it re-appears in windows update. just right click it and choose hide update. this will stop it being automatically installed when auto updates are turned on.”

I did that. I still had the same problems as before. I installed it both times the correct way and uninstalled it both times the correct way.

  34. Juicy says:

I restored windows to what I had previously before the update then I “Hid the Update” like suggested above and it seemed to work. I called Gateway(because I have free support through them and Microsoft charges) and they said they’ve had a lot of inquiries about the same issues I was having and there wasn’t much they could do and to contact Microsoft. That’s why I came here because I wasn’t going to pay Microsoft for a issue that was their fault.

  35. Juicy says:

John L Gault wrote “I did that. I still had the same problems as before. I installed it both times the correct way and uninstalled it both times the correct way.”

The full version is supposed to be out the 3rd week of January…if you can wait maybe that will fix the problem for you.

  36. John L. Galt says:

I had heard an RC2 was coming first, so I am not sure – but RC1 is definitely off my list.

  37. shyden says:

Only thing i can suggest is a backup of your stuff and a clean install of the operating system.

I know its a real ache with the sp1 at the moment and i’ve come across a problem with it which seems to affect the internet conncetion sharing between two computers. i dont know if any1 else has found this problem…?

I removed the SP1 RC1 using the installed updates link in programs and features and was successfull.

The moment i put it back in it happens all over again.

I have even tried a clean install on both computers and still no luck, only happens with the SP1. i hope Microsoft sort this issue out before they release the service pack to the public or theres gunna be a lot of trouble lol.

but if you cant install or uninstall the service pack and has caused unwanted changes to your system i recommend a system restore then full backup and clean install.

I hope an RC2 does come out soon and that these problems have been dealt with because, in my opinion, releasing the service pack as it is now is only going to cause Windows Vista more agro.

if anybody needs any 1 to 1 help just add me onto windows live messenger and i’ll be happy to help ssteberis@hotmail.co.uk

  38. Monkey says:

Yeah installing rc1 was a big mistake it didn’t allow me to access my network printer or control panel. Any of you guys know how to access the “view installed updates” through command console or otherwise because the rc1 doesn’t open the “view installed updates” so i can’t remove it and i forgot to backup my os before installing.
