Microsoft released the October 2018 Update for Windows 10, Windows 10 version 1809, on October 2, 2018 to the public.

The update is not pushed out automatically through Windows Update but requires that users and administrators install it manually for the time being.

Microsoft's official solution is to go to Settings > Update & Security and activate the "check for updates" button to install it. There are other ways to install feature updates for Windows 10.

Reports are coming in that users and admins face all kinds of issues when they run the upgrade. Not everyone runs into issues and it is likely that the update is applied without issues on most devices.

Note: it is highly recommended that you create a backup of the system partition and any important data before you install Windows Updates.

Windows 10 version 1803 was also plagued by numerous issues.

Reported Windows 10 version 1809 update issues

Upgrade issues can be experienced during download, installation or after installation. Some users get download or installation errors, and a rollback to the previous version as a consequence.

Others may get Windows 10 version 1809 to install just fine on a device but may notice afterward that something is not right.

Issue 1: missing files in User folders

Some users reported that files from User folders, e.g. Documents, were removed during the upgrade. One user reported on Reddit that the upgrade removed 60 Gigabytes of WAV files from the system, another that an entire user profile was deleted.

One administrator described the issue in the following way:

Just had this happen to a client of mine. Laptop with Windows 10 Home. Yesterday, it wanted to update to 1809, so he let it go. It completes and he boots and logs in -- and notices that all of his Documents and Pictures are gone. His background image is there. His desktop is there. His iTunes music is there. But all of his Documents and Pictures are gone. And not just moved somewhere else -- I scanned through with TreeSize just to make sure. They are gone.

An administrator who manages a PC affected by the issue suspects that the issue is caused by the Group Policy "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart" in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles as it was set on the device and not on others where the issue was not experienced.

Whether the policy is indeed responsible has not been confirmed yet.

Issue 2: Reset Settings

Some users reported that the upgrade reset certain Settings that they set to custom values to the defaults. One user reported on the Microsoft Answers community site the following issues:

  • System Restore was disabled and System Restore points deleted.
  • Past events of the Event Viewer were deleted.
  • Task Scheduler tasks were reset and History was wiped.
  • Some preferences in the Settings application have been reset.
  • Application associations may have been reset to the defaults.

Other issues

Here is a short list of other issues that users may run into when trying to upgrade or install the new Windows 10 feature update:

  1. Windows 10 update freezes system after first reboot during installation.
  2. Errors starting with 0xC1900101 when trying to upgrade. These indicate driver issues.
  3. Errors starting with 0x80070070 indicate storage issues.
  4. Windows Update is stuck at a certain percentage and nothing happens.
  5. Task Manager not reporting correct CPU usage.

We will update the list when new issues emerge.

Now You: Did you update to Windows 10 version 1809? Did you run into any issues doing so?

We updated one server to 1809 and suddenly all of the jobs in the Windows Task Scheduler that trigger some “.bat” file that execute some instructions, including copying files form/to a mapped computer, did not complete JUST that instruction. The remaining instructions of the “.bat” files (rename, etc.) were executed/completed successfully. We run all the “.bat” files manually and all works perfectly. We rolled back to 1703 and all works perfectly again. Tow week later, same issue, checked, system updated again (in an automatic Company process) to 1809. rolled back again to 1703, problem solved.

I was considering to try the upgrade to Autumn2018 version1809 upgrade as it was quiet on the complain front and I thought that by now MS would have solved their problems
Last post confirms my fear that to the contrary the problems withAutumn W10 version 1809 are still not solved’
So , I will wait a little longer before upgrading, or maybe I better wait till the complaints on thenew 2019H1 upgrade are fading before to upgrade from the Spring 2018 version.

I also went from 1803 to 1809 on 2/4/19. The only issue that I have is AMD Quick Stream keeps showing “error: program is not working”? Haven’t looked for fix yet? Update turned on dark theme on PC. No other issues.

I have tried to update to 1809 on a few computers and each one has the same issue, the install goes well until it reboots then it shuts down reverts the install because it had issues. The main problem I have is with my Main Workstation. It reboots after the install and my graphics is all messed up. The screen and mouse flicker like crazy and no icons are visible. My next step is to put a different drive in the machine and do a fresh install to see if its my hardware it doesn’t like or if it’s a software conflict.

    Hello,
I’ve got only one issue in Windows 10 1809 version update. After updated it into my Alienware 17 R4, Windows Hello does not working. Even my camera is working properly, Windows Hello says, “Couldn’t turn on camera. Please sign-in with PIN.” When I tried to improve recognition in settings, it says, “Couldn’t turn on camera. Please make sure camera is working properly”. Is someone facing this problem in Windows 10 version 1809?

After updating, when running a Windows 7 backup from Control Panel, I was notified that my c drive was now in Read Only mode. I also could not copy a file to the root of c: Rolled back to 1803, but the problem continued. I was finally able to change a SecPol to run all administrators in Admin Approval mode, and that fixed the problem. Of course I never have touched any of these settings, but the rollback did not fix my problem. This issue was quite serious. I am not sure that the setting I have now is the most secure, but what are you gonna due. Cannot have the C drive in Read only attribue. BTW, diskpart would not work when I tried to remove Read only.

    Hi Mario
Well as it was a clean new install with no dependences on previous network shares, no old documents /pictures etc , if it installed with no incompatible driver problems I reckon it should be ok.
Maybe when Microsoft get the fixed update back on line, it will come to you as an automatic update or at lest the parts you may need,
Just my thoughts as they have not said what the position is for those that seemed to get away with it, is there anything lurking in there to bite you later? I hope not as 2 of my machines did update and one tried and rolled back to 1803.

Something Jason Sherry said that got lost in the post: “Stopped applying the update as Microsoft has pulled 1809 as of today” should be a clear indication that Microsoft is aware that there are large enough issues that need to be addressed.

I’m not sure what management tool Jason is using, but I’m still using WSUS – the version 1809 updates showed up 10/2, but by 10/5 Microsoft had marked them “expired”, rendering them as unavailable. (I had left them “not approved”, since I don’t install them when they’re this new – I have to test our applications and such first.)

After the update from 1803 to 1809, mapped drives (via Group Policy) to our Windows 2012R2 file server appear as disconnected after sign in, causing major headaches with applications which depend upon mapped drives. Sorry for the details, just preempting any suggestions for steps I have already tried! Have tried numerous registry hacks, changed GPO options from create, to update to replace. Have tried removing connections via explorer, cmd line, and registry, then gpupdate /force each time with reboots, to no avail. Have removed the users from our drive mapping GPO and attempted to map the drives from explorer and the cmd line, no difference in results after logoff or reboot. Finding this on desktops using different resident AV products. Seeing this across different desktop brands/models. Have continuously forced enabled status of ‘Always Wait for the Network at Computer Startup and Logon’. Have ensured UAC is disabled via settings, registry, and local policies. Have ensured that Windows firewall is disabled. Have tried different Intel & Realtek nic drivers. Have tried forcing speed/duplex settings to match switch ports instead of auto negotiate. Have disabled power mgmt features on nic. Have tried enabling/disabling and downright uninstalling/reinstalling SMBV1/CIFS features. Have tried adding the ‘EnableLinkedConnections’ regkey as the users have local admin rights. Browsing into the mapped drive clears the disconnected state, too late for the dependent/mission critical startup applications. Stopped applying the update as Microsoft has pulled 1809 as of today. Unfortunately as our user desktops have a small SSD for the OS/boot drive, I did run diskcleanup after install to free up space, removing the WindowsOLD folder. Ugh.

Yep, this is a thing. Mapped drives just don’t reconnect when using 1809. New build or upgrade makes no difference.
Another nice bug to add to the list. This is getting rather embarrassing for Microsoft IMO.

First of all you should never update on the first month of release of a new windows version, just wait some time so all bugs are ironed out, and you should make an image backup every 2 days using some recognized software like Macrium or Acronis.

NEVER make an update without an image back up, if something goes south you will be up and running in 20 minutes more or less.

    This is just not acceptable.
And now, with two barriers removed from this happening (beta tester reductions, preview ring), it is worse.

Nearly every two months i have had clients lose printers, and scanners, and phone connectivity,.

I have disabled windows update on all 45 computers i support. And will wait until i know the shit has been fixed.

I run into problems with Excel’s TEXT function not being able to convert year and month correctly.
I also got problems with some VBA code I use for Outlook, causing out of memory errors.
After going back to previous Windows 10 version 1803 things are working again. Office version (Office 2016 or Office 365) 16.0.10827.20138 and 16.0.10730.20127 both work fine on Windows 10 1803.

Just updated my desktop and laptop to 1809. It took about 1.5 hours each to install (pretty typical). One thing I noticed was how much longer it takes Windows Explorer to respond when trying to create a new directory. In 1803, I could quickly create a subdirectory in a folder by right-click -> “New” and “Folder” would pop right up (within 1 second). With 1809, when I right-click -> “New” and it takes 5 to 7 seconds before “Folder” comes up. Clicking “New” immediately after it shows does not expedite “Folder” showing up. This is very annoying, as I have to create directories a lot to store photos, etc.
Is there any solution know for this one?

fyi, RSAT tools not built in and installed by going to optional features.
however if on a domain need to edit a gpo to install
if want to do multiple use gpo edit on DC if just one machine easier to just run gpedit.msc on that one machine
    setting is:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair
set to download repair conent and optional features direct from windows update instead of WSUS.
this will fix any missing .COM items

I’m having major issue with Hyper-V adapters since ugprading from Windows 10 1803 to 1809. When trying to copy large files from the host to a share on our NAS the file transfer hangs every time with error 0x8007003B. Only way i can copy files now is by deleting the external hyper-v switch. Re-creating it doesn’t help. Issues seems to be present on multiple upgrades. The 1809 build seems to be full of bugs.

Many Win 10 Home users will be “harmed” by these bugs in Win 10 1809 which will soon be forced on their computers as an auto-upgrade.

Most computer users prefer to run a stable OS for a few years before upgrading to the newer stable OS, eg many businesses are still running the 9-year-old Win 7.
……. With Win 10, M$ has removed user preference and forced users to upgrade the OS every 6 months to every year, mainly to increase her profit$.

Imagine, Win 10 users paying M$ to be afflicted by bugs every 6 months to every year.

Microsoft (KB4465877) : “What needs your attention”: Intel audio display notification

Microsoft and Intel have identified a compatibility issue with a range of Intel Display Audio device drivers that may result in excessive processor demand and reduced battery life. As a result, the update process to Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) will fail. If you see a “What needs your attention” notification when you run the October Update, you have an Intel Display Audio device driver (intcdaud.sys, versions 10.25.0.3 – 10.25.0.8) installed in your system.

Important: On the notification, click Back to remain on your current version of Windows 10. (Do not click “Confirm”, as this will proceed with the update and you may experience compatibility issues.)….

It’s all quite unbelievable. To answer Martin’s question, sure, I’ll continue to upgrade my old test Thinkpad on Skip Ahead (although I only turn it on a couple of times a year so this thing isn’t on it) but if updates can be blocked then I’ll keep it off the two friends’ computers who are using this mess of an OS.

Companies are discovering that people’s willingness to put up with dreadful products and policies far exceeds what logic might lead one to expect and now many of them are out of control with terrible experiences for their customers being the normal thing.

The press often doesn’t help by giving glowing reviews to ghastly devices like the disposable Surface laptop which my colleague’s customers report is a miserable user experience, just like its OS counterpart. Common decency is not very common these days.

Update using ISO on USB from Windows 10 Home version 1803, build 17134.112 went smoothly, taking a few hours. There had been an issue with updating from the web which is resolved by v.1809. However, Notifications from Action Center no longer pop up, and when opening the Action Center, they’re deleted before I can read them. They Notifications are being written to wpndatabase.db and are visible in a SQLite browser, though. Also, some file-type customization (e.g. fields shown for Photos, Documents etc.) was lost, as well as images used to customize desktop.

I’ve not had any problems with the newest Windows 10 Update, at all. In fact…

    1. Is it just me, or do things seem a little faster, a little ‘snappier’; Edge, for example, opens near instantly, and other programs seem quicker to run.

    2. NO MORE HITCHING! FINALLY, no more hitching caused by constant ESENT; ESENT stuff in the Event Log seems to be GONE, YES!

I think people who have problems with Windows 10 either have
    – older systems with older, outdated hardware (drivers cannot be updated), or
    – use some piece of third party software that stuffs things up (MSI junk software, corsair junk software, steelseries junk software, etc.), or
    – use obscure hardware, such as TV Tuner Cards, and IT’S THE MANUFACTURER’S FAULT that they don’t update their drivers (because they’re fluffing lazy)!

After installing 1809 on 2018-10-02 I have had no issues except only 21.04 gig of free space remained on my SSD. I clicked Win, did a Win-S and searched for “free up space” and checked only the “Previous Windows Installation(s)” box, which deleted 28.4 gig. I now have 49,44 gig of free space. I believe this might have happened anyway on 10-12, but I preferred to clear space now.

Unwanted upgrade to 1809 froze about midway through and then it displayed the message “undoing changes made to your computer”. Upon reboot, I received BSOD: “System Service Exception” (but with no error code). Tried the repair options after rebooting from Windows installation media but they also failed. Had to resort to clean install which succeeded on 4th attempt.

Tried to reset all network config, but as soon as I set the hyper-v network adapter as external shared adapter, the transfer speeds are unusable.

Tested for the past 2 days on a Windows 7 Pro machine that was fully patched prior.

Did a full disk image before installing.

The biggest issue I saw was when testing Reset with the “keep my files” option, it uninstalled 97 applications that had been installed on Windows 7…

Since this was a test environment, no harm done.

However, doing a full disk image before making any major change to any system is always a good idea.

I upgraded 5 workstations last night, all in a workgroup environment with a Windows server and local logins. No problems except with one particular machine which has an Nvidia GT 1030 video card. Screen text sharpness was diminished. I see that Nvidia has a new driver out this morning to address v1809 issues. I will apply that tonight during my maintenance rounds and see what happens. I did not encounter any Outlook 2010 plugin issues which seems to be plaguing some users. Outlook 2010 is deployed on the entire network as the standardized email package and the only Outlook plugins in play on my network are iTunes and Eset Nod32, neither of which were negatively affected. All in all, a pleasant non-eventful evening.

    – System Restore was disabled and System Restore points deleted.
This update gives you a complete new system, like for example an upgrade from 7 to 8. WTH would you need Win7 restore points in Win8? They’re completely useless. Same goes for System Restore – i’ve been disabling this crap since Win ME because monthy full backups of C:\ + daily incremental backups are way better.

    – Past events of the Event Viewer were deleted.
Same as above. Why would you need past events of a totally different system?

One problematic person out of millions isn’t a representative sample. If a handful of idiots ate laundry pods while everyone else use them properly, do we need to ban them? We have no idea what registry tweaks, optimizations, “antispy” crap or anything else those “it deleted my profile or files” users did.

I saw the upgrade Reddit post on 02.10. some minutes before midnight, immediately ran Windows Update and less than 1h later i had it; no issues whatsoever.

No, it’s not a new system. At most is a service pack so restore points, not to mention events to find why it did fail, would still be useful if something went south.

Did you care to think those problems could happen not because of user interaction but oem installations like it happened with some Lenovo portable models and the 1803 upgrade? of course not.

@Finvana: That’s OEM’s fault then, not Microsoft’s. Like the mentioned group policy setting – i’m a power user (not just that, i’m a service guy since 98SE) and had no clue such a setting even exists. Besides that, everyone that’s not a complete computer newbie will do a full reinstall (deleting everything, recreating partitions, etc.) or pay someone like me to do it because of all free bloatware gifts HP, Lenovo, Toshiba and other OEMs give us. If you leave everything as MS intended, there won’t be any problems.

I wonder how many people will cry “it deleted my Downloads folder contents!!!” at next upgrade or now at deleting earlier Win version because they ticked it in Disk Cleanup without reading what it actually does.

Luckily the situation changed with Windows 10 but it wasn’t always possible to activate an OEM key with a clean Windows installation ISO (it was OEM fault too but Microsoft allowed it). And even with clean installations upgrades sometimes fail. Didn’t you have some clients lose bluetooth connectivity in windows 10 because Microsoft decided to update the drivers to some faulty ones?.

Users do a lot of wrong things with their computers but this time it was only Microsoft fault. It’s not the first time they release buggy updates.

PS: I’m a service guy too.

YOU CANT USE RESTORE POINTS AFTER THE UPDATE, THAT’S WHY THEY TURN IT OFF AND KILL THE EARLIER POINTS. THE ONLY OPTION WOULD BE TO ROLL BACK, SO TURN THE SYSTEM RESTORE BACK ON AND START CREATING NEW RESTORE POINTS FOR THE NEW BUILD. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO RESTORE FROM A RESTORE POINT AFTER ONE OF THE 5 WINDOWS-10 NEW BUILDS ??? YOU CANT

The only Issue I have run into is: If you have ipv6 turned off and are on a “private” network Microsoft Edge will not connect to the outside, the fix is either setting your network to public or too turn IPV6 back on. ….. Or use a different browser

Any insight into the user profile corruption problem at 1809? I am occasionally seeing this on login and have to restore from a recently set restore point. After new up date 1809, I have issues that it resets everything to their desired choices , such as all Microsoft options. Makes me sick. Also my Windows updater says “corruption” and troubleshooter “rebuilds” but does not fix it. I have to immediately upon logging on to PC check updates, troubleshoot updater, repair corruption and still nothing accomplished.I hate it. I use System Ninja to for a cleaner it does not clean entirely now. I need help. I am not Tech Savvy and neither is Microsoft Techs now. My Yahoo mail will never be the same and I am very dissatisfied. I can see by all the comments , everyone knows more than me.When someone says they went back to previous Windows what does that mean? How can you do that and not have the 1809 version keep uploading. If I stop ALL updates Windows Defender will not upgrade and when that happens, forget running the whole system, too many hang ups. What is the best cleaner? Another question I have. Help!

        Hi Kathleen
not that I am such an expert, but I might have some hints for you
        – it resets everything to their desired choice: this is not worrying , only nasty and take a lot of time to correct it to your liking.
-Windows updater says “corruption”: this looks more serious. apparently MS- assistance did not work for you (which is quit common). so what to do: wait and see whether the problem disappears in a week time,if not try a manaul update of a newer update e.g. on 12december after dec patch, or restore to previous version.
A restore is only possible if you have selected to make a restore point at the moment yur system was working fine. Goto settings, select restore and select that restore point which you think was made during a good working system. before doing that , backup your files!!!
You will get the older system working, then I would if I was you, put the longest delay possible for your version for an upgrade, and hope by that time that some problems in W10 v1809 are solved.
        success

I just upgraded to 1803. I will upgrade to 1809 when the next release comes out.
Yeah seems like good strategy to me.

sorry Martin, not installed windows10 version 1809 and will not do for next couple of months, I think.
Windows is not my main O.S., more to keep it for fun, so I do not like to spend too much time on keeping it uptodate. My method since first W10 install is to wait several months, till the complaints on technical fora, like yours , dry up. Then only I try an upgrade. So far have had no problems with any of the W10 installs/upgrades and like to keep it that way :)

I have this option turned off, but every application has recent files in jumplist on the taskbar. Does anyone has the same problem?

-Task Scheduler tasks were reset and History was wiped.
Not sure what he means by “reset” here, but it’s normal for History not only to be wiped but switched off (disabled). It has been for years.

-System Restore was disabled and System Restore points deleted.
This also has been normal for years.

Windows Store will not open says no Internet connection. Edge, weather app will not open due to same issue. I reverted back to my previous build and will be quite leery to upgrade again. Did not fully try all other apps, that was enough to turn me off.

don’t worry on Edge, as this is about the worst browser there is. Choose any other that will be better already, e.g. Firefox, Opera,Vivaldi, Chrome, and for security Tor-Browser.

System Restore is disabled, when MCT is used, when upgrading via ISO, it stays on.

It’s switched off after every single feature update that I do. And I do a lot of them with Insider. It’s not new to this build.
