How to download and install the April 2024 security updates

Security updates are downloaded and installed automatically on non-managed Windows devices by default. Windows users who do not want to wait for this to happen can speed up the process by searching for updates manually in Windows Update or by downloading the updates manually to install them.

Here is how that is done using Windows Update.

  1. Select Start, type Windows Update and load the Windows Update item that is displayed.
  2. Select check for updates to run a manual check for updates.

As always, make sure to back up the system before installing any updates. It is a good safety precaution. While Windows does include recovery options, this may fail and it is always a good idea to have a second option available in that case.

KB5036892. failed on restart. pressed restart option to start a 2nd time. after completely installed, icons on desktop moved (dual monitor setup) & noticeable bloat of 4.5GB additional loaded , related to O/S. Slower by 2.5% on responses and in benchmarking. Win10pro feature update up to 22H2. Normally, cumulative recent updates so not have this much of a ‘felt’ hit on performance on this i7 terminal but I had to come here to report this cycle.

I have determined that the C:windows\softwaredistribution\download area and disk cleanup | delivery optimization files area are hiding the KB5036892 bloat. The step up in Win 10 Pro to 19045.4291 appears to have accomplished the update to the servicing stack without any of the known issues effects

Imagine being okay with this amount of bugs. You get what you pay for I guess. This is why I don’t use PC and Linux, it’s horrible if you care even a tiny bit about security.

Apparently, you don’t use Linux Mint and update once a month. The number of monthly issues for Linux Mint is atrocious!

@ all the readers–When a tech blog like Martin’s announces monthly updates, it doesn’t mean update your computer. It really means, for those with any MS Windows experience, make sure to put Auto Updates on Pause for a few weeks and definitely make sure you have a full system image/backup. The last thing it means is install the updates and make your computer slower, unbootable, unstable, broken, destroyed, needing a complete reinstall, etc.

On my desktop it was a lengthy download and installation process. (Windows 10). I suspect KB5036892 Windows 10 Cumulative Update was the reason. (read similar experiences on WindowsTenForums). And it disabled part of Windows Security. That could be fixed though.

If you check Windows Update today, then you may find under History that KB4052623 and KB2267602 are now installed and resolve your problem.

@chesscanoe I could not find these updates (Windows 10, version 21H2) but my machine is running fine now.

MS says that there is nothing wrong with this update, however my W11 is not the same after installed. The screen lag is bigger, and the SSD seems slower too. Programs seems slower while opening also. It’s like a sensation, I have made no tests.

And how many remote exploits which can take control of the entire system were closed in these patches? Windows is fscking Swiss cheese.

You’d have to be an idiot to use their trash.

After installed, SSD is slower than before. However WiFi speed seems better, did they fixed something about connections? :/

After uninstalled this update, my W11 is running faster as before, so IMHO this monthly update seems to have some negative effects in the performance of W11 itself. Such a pity again!
