Microsoft announced today that it is bringing image creation capabilities to Bing Chat. The new functionality is powered by an an advanced version of the DALL-E, according to Microsoft.

Bing Chat users may ask the artificial intelligence to create images for them, and Bing Chat will respond with a selection of images that were generated using the user's instructions.

Microsoft notes that the feature is available in Creative mode at first, and that it is rolling out to all Bing Chat users currently. Creative mode is one of the three modes that Bing Chat can operate in currently. The answers and replies are more creative in this mode, which makes it ideal for creating images based on descriptions.

In one example, Microsoft asked Bing Chat to create an image "of an astronaut walking through a galaxy of sunflowers", and Bing Chat returned four images using Image Creator.

Options to adjust the created images are provided. There are several suggestions by Microsoft, and also the option to use text commands to change the images, e.g., to change the type of flower or replace the astronaut with a cat.

Microsoft explains: "for those in the Bing preview, Bing Image Creator will be fully integrated into the Bing chat experience, rolling out initially in Creative mode. By typing in a description of an image, providing additional context like location or activity, and choosing an art style, Image Creator will generate an image from your own imagination".

The keywords "draw an image" or "create an image" may be used to instruct Bing Chat to create images based on text input.

Microsoft notes that Bing Chat's image generating capabilities will also be available in Microsoft Edge at the same time. To use the functionality in Edge, Edge users need to "click the Bing Image Creator icon in the sidebar" to open the interface and start giving the AI instructions.

The new image generation capabilities have several safeguards and protections to block "potential misuse" of Image Creator. Microsoft and its partner OpenAI have put limitations in place to prevent the creation of "harmful or unsafe images".

Bing Chat will block the creation of the image and display a warning to the user, if its safeguards kick in based on the provided instructions.

The introduction of image generating capabilities marks a major milestone for the entire project. Up until now, Bing Chat was capable of returning text only. Now, it can respond with text or images. It is probably only a matter of time before other options, such as audio or video content, become available as well.

Microsoft plans to roll out the new capabilities in Balanced and Precise modes as well "over time", but does not provide a timeline for the introduction. The new Creative mode feature is rolling out, and some users may not have access to the feature at the time of writing.

All users may try the new image creator on the official website here.

Bing Chat is a huge success for Microsoft. The service crossed 100 million daily users just weeks after it was launched as a public preview.

No need for this. Stable Diffusion free, open, works offline.

Thanks for the link. Bing Chat said I had to be in the Preview and using Image Creator in Edge but the link seems to make it so you can test without being in the Preview or even using Edge. I just needed to sign into my MSFT account.
Not really interested in Chatbots but image creation is intriguing and fun to me.
