We are all still patiently waiting for the release of the official Android 12, which is currently in beta 3 and should be released in mid-August, and already there are leaks for Android 13’s codename.

It appears Google is already starting to lay the groundwork for the release, despite it still being a long way off. And it seems that the dessert names are back! After all, the reasoning behind these names is that Android makes life so much sweeter for users.

Recently, a commit was spotted on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that hinted at the codename for Android 13. This internal code was leaked on Twitter and showed that Android 13 is being referred to by the codename Tiramisu, after the Italian coffee-flavored dessert.

That dessert tradition died after version 10 and the rebrand refresh that took place. However, the internal codenames seem to continue, and they are still following alphabetical order. The codenames weren’t used publicly after version 10, it is fun to know that version 10 would have been Quince Tart, and 11 was referred to internally as Red Velvet Cake or RVC for short; even Android 12 has the codename Snowcone. It is unlikely that Google will refer to Android 13 publicly by the codename Tiramisu.

The leak of another dessert-based codename may hint that perhaps this tradition is still with us in some way. After all, the company even had a big reveal where they unveiled Oreo a few versions back. And there is always a talking point about what the next dessert would be.

Although the codename doesn't affect the development of the OS in any way, these dessert names were always a fun little easter egg in itself. It also brought a unique element that other OS just lacked. However, it seems unlikely that Google will be returning these codenames to the public.

Closing Words

As we are all patiently waiting for the release of Android 12, it is interesting to think about future releases and even possible codenames. Android 13 (Tiramisu) is only scheduled to be released next year. With the codename Tiramisu being leaked, we wonder what version 14’s ‘U’ codename would be?

    Welcome to Ghacks Shaun.

But seriously, an article about a ‘leaked’ codename for an Operating system.
How many people actually care about such things outside of a hardcore android site?

As a suggestion, drop the strange random bolding of parts of articles.

This is not an invalid point, but… as a hardcore Android user who also reads ghacks, I found the article interesting, and it got me to click.

There is always room for fun articles like this that aren’t about anything super serious. I know people here love to get into rage-filled “discussions” about how much they hate Microsoft and Google and which web browser is the most evil, but I for one think articles like this are a nice breath of fresh air every once in a while.
