Clipjump turns the Windows Clipboard into a pro Clipboard

The Windows Clipboard is a useful feature of the operating system that comes in handy when you need to temporarily save data for use in a different application. This can be text that you want to paste somewhere, a link that you want to share with friends, or the path of a program that you want to access.

The tool has its limitations, mainly that it is limited to one save spot only. Copying another item will remove the previously copied item from the clipboard with no option to get it back again.

I have reviewed many clipboard managers in the past here on Ghacks, among them Shapeshifter, Clipboard Magic 5, and Clipboard Help+Spell. They all have in common that they extend the functionality of the Windows Clipboard, for instance by adding additional save slots to the program.

Clipjump

Clipjump is a free portable clipboard manager for the Windows operating system that improves the native clipboard significantly without really changing its core functionality at all. If you want, you can still use Ctrl-C to copy items to the clipboard and Ctrl-V to paste them into applications.

One change however is that you will get a preview of each item saved in the clipboard when you hit Ctrl-V, and that you can cycle through all items  by holding down the Ctrl-key and tapping on V to do so. You can also go background by tapping on C instead.

What you may like even more is the fact that it is using less than a Megabyte while running in the background. That's hard to beat by any other clipboard manager out there.

You can cancel the pasting by pressing X and releasing Ctrl while in paste mode. Another option that you have here is to delete the active clipboard entry by tapping on X twice. To delete every clipboard item, press X three times while in Paste mode.

That's not all though even though it is pretty impressive. You can open the program settings to modify preferences including the following:

  • Maximum number of active clipboard entries.
  • Quality of the preview thumbnail for images.
  • How long you want to keep the items in the history (ten by default).
  • Whether you want the data to be retained on program exit and restart.
  • Option to change advanced shortcuts.

The clipboard history displays all saved items at once in chronological sort order. You can use the search to find items that you are interested in, click on any item to get a preview, delete individual items or all at once.

The program displays the size on disk as well, which may be useful if you use the program extensively.

To paste an entry from the history to the underlying window select it first, and press Shift-Enter afterwards. This puts the underlying window into focus afterwards.

The program offers several other features of interest that may appeal to its users. You can enable Incognito Mode from the system tray icon to block the recording of new items to the clipboard. Another feature that you may like is that it supports copy and cut operations that you run in other programs. These will also be saved to the clipboard automatically.

Verdict

If you want to improve the clipboard of your Windows system, then you may want to take a closer look at Clipjump. It is lightweight and portable, but still offers an impressive set of features. Good news is that you do not have to learn any new shortcuts if you do not want to, but can still make use of the extended clipboard functionality it provides. Definitely a keeper.

I downloaded it and tried to open it (using 7-Zip). Clicking on the .exe file pops up a box asking if I want to see the manual. If I answer Yes, it crashes saying it can’t find the file. If I answer No, it exits.

    What next? Another unzipper?

You are committing a clean blunder. The Clipjump.exe when starts for the first time looks for the Clipjump.chm in the same folder and opens it. But here you are not extracting Clipjump to a folder and opening it directly from the temporary extracted location..
Just Extract the files of Clipjump.7z to a folder (probably named as “Clipjump”) and run..

You simply have to press Ctrl 1 to use the first clipboard, Ctrl 2 for the second, Ctrl 3 for the third, and so on and so forth (these hotkeys are completely customizable). Once you are using the clipboard you want, the usual cut/copy and paste procedures will get the job done (i.e. Ctrl X/Ctrl C and Ctrl V or Right click -> Cut/Copy or Paste).

Thanks Martin for this article. Clipjump is certainly a great clipboard tool. I do a lot of document work on my laptop and am always looking for Clipboard tools to help me. I have used a lot and would easily say that Clipjump stands out tall among the generation of Clipboard tools. I personally is fond of how it works , the Ctrl + VVVV navigation technique, the SPACE fix and the Channels are highlights for me.
Any home user is recommended to use this light and free tool and feel the magic.

I got to know about Clipjump from my blog-writer friend (Lho) who was crazily saying how Clipjump has boosted up the speed he works. I, a faithful of the fellow ClipX was even not ready to try something new but he asked me to bet on this.
I gave a try to Clipjump and was happy firstly only because I didn’t saw it better than ClipX and so had won the bet. But then I saw the help files (online and offline) and understood how everything worked and what great features it had.
Now, I am happy to lose the bet and immensely pleased with this free tool.

yes i have tried that earlier and didn’t used it because i liked another clipboard manager ClipStep. ClipJump is originated in the same language and can be called a very powerful version of it. The article forgets to discuss ClipJump Channel feature – a super incredible feature for any user

It’s a good looking program no doubt but while I’m more than willing to let go of Ditto no one else has made calling recent clips and search them easier.

If more features slow me down I’m out.

This is one of the many wonders of the logic of windows, the complete disregard of a configurable multi-clipboard tool. I’ve tried virtually every clipboard tool over the years but still end up using the same old tool : CLCL (last updated in 2005) http://www.nakka.com/soft/clcl/index_eng.html
Simply because it is highly configurable & allows permanent entries (perfect for frequently used entries : email/passwords/code/snippets etc) & that the db can be saved & restored. Works nicely on windows 2000 through to windows 8. The only weird problem is that whilst using it with firefox on w8 with a laptop it sometimes remaps the keys making the computer think that the CTRL button is permanently pressed. This isn’t a problem of CLCL but an age old microsoft enigma that microsoft (on most versions of windows & not necessarily using firefox/clcl) has never corrected. To correct it you can press both CTRL buttons at the same time, followed by both SHIFTS & then both ALTS. Very odd, but worth usng CLCL if you need to paste a lot of recurrent code.

I likewise find myself always going back to an older tool which isn’t updated but really doesn’t need it: ClipX

Best feature is that CTRL+V works as normal, WIN+V (or whatever you want to configure it to) gives you the clipboard history popup. Simple but awesome.

you can use unlimited channels to store persistent data and restore them any time and any where. always see http://avi-win-tips.blogspot.in/p/clipjump.html for a complete knowhow.
