Clipjump turns the Windows Clipboard into a pro Clipboard

The Windows Clipboard is a useful feature of the operating system that comes in handy when you need to temporarily save data for use in a different application. This can be text that you want to paste somewhere, a link that you want to share with friends, or the path of a program that you want to access.

The tool has its limitations, mainly that it is limited to one save spot only. Copying another item will remove the previously copied item from the clipboard with no option to get it back again.

I have reviewed many clipboard managers in the past here on Ghacks, among them Shapeshifter, Clipboard Magic 5, and Clipboard Help+Spell. They all have in common that they extend the functionality of the Windows Clipboard, for instance by adding additional save slots to the program.

Clipjump

Clipjump is a free portable clipboard manager for the Windows operating system that improves the native clipboard significantly without really changing its core functionality at all. If you want, you can still use Ctrl-C to copy items to the clipboard and Ctrl-V to paste them into applications.

One change however is that you will get a preview of each item saved in the clipboard when you hit Ctrl-V, and that you can cycle through all items  by holding down the Ctrl-key and tapping on V to do so. You can also go background by tapping on C instead.

What you may like even more is the fact that it is using less than a Megabyte while running in the background. That's hard to beat by any other clipboard manager out there.

You can cancel the pasting by pressing X and releasing Ctrl while in paste mode. Another option that you have here is to delete the active clipboard entry by tapping on X twice. To delete every clipboard item, press X three times while in Paste mode.

That's not all though even though it is pretty impressive. You can open the program settings to modify preferences including the following:

• Maximum number of active clipboard entries.
• Quality of the preview thumbnail for images.
• How long you want to keep the items in the history (ten by default).
• Whether you want the data to be retained on program exit and restart.
• Option to change advanced shortcuts.

The clipboard history displays all saved items at once in chronological sort order. You can use the search to find items that you are interested in, click on any item to get a preview, delete individual items or all at once.

The program displays the size on disk as well, which may be useful if you use the program extensively.

To paste an entry from the history to the underlying window select it first, and press Shift-Enter afterwards. This puts the underlying window into focus afterwards.

The program offers several other features of interest that may appeal to its users. You can enable Incognito Mode from the system tray icon to block the recording of new items to the clipboard. Another feature that you may like is that it supports copy and cut operations that you run in other programs. These will also be saved to the clipboard automatically.

Verdict

If you want to improve the clipboard of your Windows system, then you may want to take a closer look at Clipjump. It is lightweight and portable, but still offers an impressive set of features. Good news is that you do not have to learn any new shortcuts if you do not want to, but can still make use of the extended clipboard functionality it provides. Definitely a keeper.
