Please tune it down Opera!
Opera stands out as a popular choice for users seeking a fast, secure, and feature-rich browsing experience. However, one aspect of Opera that can sometimes be bothersome is the startup sound that plays when the browser is launched.
While this sound may not be intrusive to everyone, there are certain situations where muting it is preferable, such as in quiet environments or when working late at night or you just don't like the sound itself.
Users of Reddit have created a post about how to turn off Opera startup sound, and they seem to be still searching for answers.
If you are among the ones who wonder how to turn off Opera startup sound, we have good news. You are at the right place!
How to turn off Opera startup sound
The Opera startup sound is a brief melody that plays when the browser is opened. It serves as an auditory cue to indicate that Opera is ready for use.
While some users find this sound to be a pleasant addition, others may find it distracting or unnecessary.
Unfortunately, Opera doesn't provide a built-in setting to disable the splash screen. However, there are a couple of workarounds that you can use to get rid of it.
Here is how to turn off Opera startup sound:
Method 1: Using a Hidden Flag
- Open Opera and type opera://flags in the address bar
- In the search bar, type intro
- Select Disabled from the dropdown menu next to Opera One introduction
- Click Relaunch now to restart Opera
This method should disable the splash screen and startup sound permanently.
Method 2: Deleting the Splash Screen File
Even tough the first method seems to work for most of the users, some of Opera GX users have reported that this method only temporarily disables the Opera startup sound.
But luckily, there is another answer to how to turn off Opera startup sound:
- Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera\[Version Number]
- Delete the opera_gx_splash.exe file
This method will permanently remove the splash screen file, but you will need to repeat the process each time you update Opera.
The Opera team might be working on a preference to disable or remove the splash screen in future versions of the browser. The preference might be available in Opera 106 and later versions.

Neither of these methods work. I keep getting the sound suddenly attack my eardrums.
I only get the sound after relaunching after Opera updates
Not all updates but some reset the splash screen and its noise, it wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t so annoyingly awful. Its worse than an air raid siren going off. So, every now and again you will have to do the flags or remove the file. It does work as turned it off in the flags before, several times in fact.
Every time opera updates the splash screen can end up restarting. I’ve not had it start up for months and now a new update and I’ve got to disable it again. Its annoying and opera should stop doing it.
It is all about money, just like how they don’t let you set your own Default search engine and they force you to use their search engine partners based on your region.
If the splash screen will give them money, they will make it as loud as possible not caring a second about it.
I mean, OperaGX has had sounds and weird stuff on it since day one, but normal Opera since version 100, also got it, with no way to really turn it off properly, as you note, you need to disable a flag, not a toggle or something for Users Choice, so if they remove the flag, then it is gone.
Opera was a nice Browser but they ruined it with these features, since they take user’s choice in favor of giving you whatever will make them some cents.
Opera was good when it was Presto, but I can see why they wanted to change to Chromium. When Chromium Opera launched in 2013, it was so good – the UI was beautiful and clean, it was probably the fastest Chromium browser to launch from cold start and render websites just as fast.
As the years passed, they made the UI uglier, bloated it with more useless buttons you can’t disable or hide, yet somehow they kept it to be just as lightning fast as it was in 2013 – both in cold start and speed at rendering content.
But now with version 100, not only they bloated the browser even more with AI trash and somehow managed to make the UI absolutely ugly, useless and oversized, they add this splash screen.
I tried complaining on their forum mostly about the UI margins and how much useless space they take. I probably spent 30 minutes writing my post, used images to show examples and they deleted my post. I didn’t use any slurs or insults in my criticisms – all I said was the same as here – it was better years ago, now everything is worse. If their feelings are so easily hurt that they delete my post, then I don’t really care about that browser anymore.
I liked and used Opera prior to version 100, now I’m back on Brave.
Criticism is never an easy pill to swallow for people that think they know best.
