Iceland-based Vivaldi Technologies released Vivaldi 6.4 for all supported platforms today. The new version of the Chromium-based web browser adds volume controls to its popout video feature, gives users more control over address bar suggestions and improves the built-in Calendar.

Existing users should receive the update automatically. Desktop users may select Vivaldi Menu > Help > Check for updates to run a manual check for updates. Vivaldi should pick up the update and install it automatically.

Vivaldi 6.4: new features

Vivaldi Browser supports displaying videos in an area that is unliked from the actual browser window. Known as picture-in-picture mode, it is mostly designed to give users an option to watch a video while doing other things in the browser.

Vivaldi 6.4 introduces support for changing the volume of the video directly in the popout video interface. It is a small but useful feature addition. Previously, Vivaldi users had to either use the operating system's volume controls or go back to the main video page to adjust the volume of playback.

The volume slider is attached to the picture-in-picture video interface. Just use the mouse or touch to adjust it.

Another new feature in Vivaldi 6.4 is the option to customize the address bar. More precisely, what Vivaldi returns when you type into the address bar.

Like all modern browsers, Vivaldi uses a wide range of sources to react on user input in the address bar. Browsers may return bookmarks, browsing history entries, suggestions from the default search engine or open tabs among other things.

Not all of these are equally useful to all users. Some may prefer only some type of results. This is exactly what Vivaldi engineers added in the new version of the browser.

Select Vivaldi Menu > Settings > Address Bar to configure the options under Drop-Down Menu Priority on the page.

There, you may change the priority of results and add or hide certain options. For instance, you may disable the browsing history, but keep the typed history. Vivaldi is a highly customizable browser and it shows again here.

You may use the new customization option to minimize what the browser returns when you type or go all in. It is entirely up to you.

Calendar is an integral part of Vivaldi browser next to the integrated email client. The latest update introduces support for calendar templates. These templates allow users to create recurring events quicker that don't match a single rule of recurrence.

You could create templates for meetings, appointments, activities or social events using the new functionality.

Other changes in Vivaldi 6.4

Vivaldi includes a large number of other changes. The entire changelog is listed on the official blog. Engineers addressed several crashes in previous versions of the browser and a huge number of issues.

Now You: have you tried Vivaldi recently?

    Hey Martin,

Would you bring some awareness to Thorium browser? It’s yet another chrome deriative but development with speed in mind and has support for windows 7 for the weirdos who still use windows 7.
