Google is informing YouTube Premium Family subscribers currently that the price of the service will go up for them. Especially those grandfathered into YouTube Premium plans receive emails, but the price increase appears to affect all YouTube Premium Family subscribers.

According to the emails, the price of a YouTube Premium Family subscription goes up to $22.99. Some grandfathered customers pay $14 or even less per month currently, but even regular subscribers will have the price of their plan increased by $5 to $22.99.

YouTube Premium Family brings the ad-free YouTube experience to up to 5 family members. Access to YouTube Music Premium is included in the subscription and users may also use some extra features on YouTube, such as downloading videos for offline viewing.

The price increase affects YouTube Premium Family plans only at the time. All other plans, including the individual plan and student plan, keep their current prices for now. Individual is still available at $11.99 per month, and a bit less when paid annually.

The new price is listed on the YouTube Premium website already. It is limited to select regions only at the time. The new price is listed for visitors from the United States, but if you check the price in select European regions, such as Germany, you still see previous price, which in the case of Germany, is €17.99.

Not all grandfathered accounts seem to be included in the price hike, judging from comments on sites such as Reddit. Those who pay $7.99 per month claim that they have not received the price increase emails yet.

Closing Words

Whether YouTube Premium Family is worth the original price or the new price is up to the individual user. Paying $22.99 per month equates to more than $275 per year. This makes YouTube Premium Family one of the most expensive online streaming solutions available, surpassing Netflix's $19.99 Premium plan. Granted, Google's plan includes access to music, which Netflix does not offer.

Now You: are you a YouTube Premium subscriber? What is your take on the price increase?

I’ve never even considered Youtube Premium – way to go Google to ensure I never do.
There seems now to be a population addicted to streaming entertainment. I never have been and I’m not about to be.
I look around my neighbours, many on low wages and struggling with the soaring cost of living here in the UK – who seem to regard £50-worth of online services a month as more vital than groceries or rent !

Don’t get me wrong – I’m no luddite. I enjoy my entertainment as much as anyone. But I subscribe just one at a time to streaming services.
Netflix one month, Prime the next and so on. Family are warned to watch what they want to on the current one, as it’ll be gone in a month, replaced by another.

The most curious thing about YouTube Premium is that it’s NEVER been on the list ! And at this rate it’s never going to be.
And the rest will quickly find they’ve shot their bolt with me if they imagine for a moment they can afford to get greedy.

I was in management for 35 years before I retired, and I can testify from experience that, whether you’re selling apples or movies, there’s precious little profit in reduced turnover.

YouTube is the media channel of the hidden “One World Government”, we are in one way or other already paying for their service and surveillance on us, but let the sheeple pay for it they want to part with their money.

These tech giants are all on this path. In the past, you were the product and it was free. Now that you are the product, you must also pay them.

In related news: NewPipe is decreasing the price of free forever to extra super free beyond all time and space of their product that does everything YT “premium” does, and more.
Seriously, why would I pay Google for media that DOESN’T BELONG TO GOOGLE…?????

Hmmm…… since it’s all currently hosted on their platform, hardware, etc….?
Google/YouTube switches off their server farms, pulls the plugs etc.. then what dear Leecher?
Just go to ‘NewPipe’ and watch right!…..ohhh.

Nice logic there. Then you should also happily pay 20e per month to the company that made the plastic on your CDs. 90% of googles music is illegally uploaded by the users, same with videos. Google created no content and Google will pay the artists nothing. This is just another scam, like Spotify, for the convenience seeking phoneuser who can feel all smug and act like they paid the artists for the media they consume. Google are laughing their asses off at these dumb sheep. I don’t worry if Google would shut down YouTube, I have already STOLEN a few TB worth of music and video to last me a few lifetimes.

“Need” is excessive. Increased profits, rather. Always more. To e or not to be, GAFAM. They’re killing competition hence have all the latitude to increase fees and prices. [auto-censored]

I use Piped for searching & viewing YouTube. Even without Piped I’d handle YouTube with uBO and a few scripts as i used to before.

These corporations know people are addicted and that most of us are technically unskilled to find workarounds, perfect ingredients for rising prices.

Subscriptions are too expensive and they add up.

YouTube isn’t worth that much money. You can get Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for five friends and family members (Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family) for 21.99 euros in Ireland (with more countries coming later). I have no idea why Google think YouTube is worth that much money.

” According to screenshots of YouTube’s email shared by subscribers on Reddit and Twitter, the price change affects subscribers in several regions, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, New Zealand, and Japan. While the price change is only applicable to the Family Plan in these regions, subscribers in Turkey and Argentina will also have to pay more for Individual membership.”

$275 per year for a service like YouTube, I don’t know but that’s a bit mad. YouTube Premium doesn’t offer anything that can’t be already achieved by using uBO or Newpipe, Piped, Invidious, Vanced. Even after that if I subscribe to it for the sake of supporting content creators, YouTube takes a large chunk of it for itself and so you need Sponsorblock even after paying for premium. And don’t forget return YouTube dislikes as well. And ugly shorts videos everywhere.

Desktop browser –> Brave or uBlock Origin

    Android –> NewPipe

Android TV, Fire TV Stick / Cube –> SmartTubeNext

iOS / iPadOS –> Wipr or 1Blocker for Safari, look out for an Invidious instance, bookmark it and put it on your homescreen

If you pay for YouTube Premium, you are out of your mind. Giving Google your money, LOL.
