Microsoft Corporation was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen back in 1975. The company gained traction in the PC market thanks to its MS-DOS operating system which was followed by Microsoft Windows, a graphical user interface that established the company’s domination in the home PC market.

Microsoft today is best know for the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office, the company’s Office suite, and several other services that the company either created and published by itself, like the Bing search engine, the browser Internet Explorer and the file synchronization service SkyDrive, or acquired like the messaging software Skype.

Microsoft recently began to invest heavily into the smartphone market, where it tries to gain traction with Windows Phone, and the tablet device market with the release of its first first party tablet device to the public, the Surface.
