The developers of the BitTorrent client qBittorrent have released a new stable version of the client for all supported operating systems. QBittorrent 4.3.0 is the first release since April 2020, and as such introduces many changes and fixes to the application.

Users who use the client already should see update notifications pop up in the client when they start it up. A click on Help > Check for Updates runs a manual update check so that the update can be installed on the system.

Note: Windows may display a SmartScreen warning screen when the installer is run; this happens for instance when a program is new. I checked the 64-bit Windows installer on VirusTotal and it is clean.

The new version of the torrent client uses the latest version of libtorrent and Qt 5.15.1. The former includes numerous fixes and improvements, including fixed memory leaks and fixes for speed issues on Windows caused by the operating system's caching logic. Qt 5.15.1 on the other hand improves high DPI support on all system.

QBittorrent users who use custom themes may notice that themes may change many user interface element colors once they have been updated now.  One downside to this is that theme bundles won't work properly with the new release until they are updated by their designers.

As far as other feature additions are concerned, there are some:

  • Users are informed when the move of a torrent has been completed.
  • The new keyboard shortcut Ctrl-I opens the Statistics window.
  • The client's Web UI supports RSS functionality.

QBittorrent users who notice slower client exits compared to previous versions may want to try and increase the maximum limit of the parameter concurrent HTTP announce in the advanced settings to improve this.

The official release notes list many bug fixes next to all this. Notably from a user perspective are, among others:

  • The complete file detection logic has been improved; this is used when rechecking, adding, or moving torrents.
  • Calculations of the current state of torrents improved.
  • The peer list is cleared if a private torrent tracker is edited.
  • Banning of selected peers is more robust.
  • RSS articles are marked read when the torrent is downloaded.
  • HTTPS tracker validation option added to Linux and Mac OS X versions.

New users and those who prefer a standalone installer / version can download the release files from the official download repository.

Tip: Check out some of our qBittorrent guides, e.g. on creating private torrents, searching for torrents from within qBittorrent, configuring qBittorrent to cut torrent traffic if a VPN disconnects, what the program's Advanced Saving Management feature is all about, or these general qBitorrent tips.

Now You: Do you use a torrent client? If so which, and why that client?

I really miss qBittorrent on the spyware OS (Android). Currently using LibreTorrent on Android which is the probably the best on the platform.

I began using QBittorrent after utorrent started adding 3rd party toolbars and such.
Never had any issues with QB, but nonetheless I am currently not using it anymore, as I do not run torrents locally on my desktop PC anymore.

I have since moved to running a torrent/file-server on a raspberry pi (advantage of being always on), relying on Deluge as a client. I use the thinclient on my Windows machine for adding torrents, same as I would when running QB.
It is a workable but not ideal solution from the point of view of usability, speed, and reliability.

As the ghacks comments are a great place to get input on software alternatives from likeminded people – are there any suggestions on a better client that supports running the main process on a debian system and allowing remote control from a web or windows client? I know that transmission also supports this setup, but never tried it since I don’t see any immediate advantages over my current Deluge setup, which works well enough.

“The peer list is cleared if a private torrent tracker is edited.”

And peers can no longer be manually added to private torrents either since this version… They hardened the private flag “DRM” to avoid cheating.

Not a terrible idea. it just prevents inexperienced users from messing things up in private sites. cheaters will always cheat…

Still using uTorrent 1.8.3 😂 I can’t stand apps like these which use a single color to draw all icons. Does it have skins?

    1. Allwynd said on October 19, 2020 at 4:59 pm
      Reply

The new skins just change the color of the UI, not the icons, there is some option to change icons, but it seems it’s not made easy like WinRAR or 7-Zip themes, instead you have to do everything on your own. There are some UI themes, like black, white, grey, etc. but they just change the window color, like Windows 10’s Dark Mode.

Maybe as this gets fleshed out in the future, theming will be made easier.

I tried this out but it freezes up for me. UI completely locks, had to kill it with task manager.

Reverted back to 4.2.5 for now.

Strange. It works as flawlessly as 4.2.5 for me. Win 10 / 2004, Qbitorrent 4.3.0 64bit.

On 4.2.5, clicking on the Done column will sort the current list of files that are being downloaded.

However, as the completion % changes for a file, it is not moved to the new sorted position.

On 4.1.9 the files are re-sorted as the completion % changes.

I was using 4.2.5, mostly for the dark themes.

It has some bugs in the UI as when sorting by a different column is not refreshed automatically..

    Thank’s for the articel Martin,
After Azureus became Vuze and not much later bloatware I never found any good download program which was, alike Azureus in the beginning but with a 64 bit installer.
I have tried picotorrent & µTorrent. And let not forget main all time favorit eMule MorphXT.

I have also tried qBittorrent in 2009 but they where updating there release even faster than Don Juan, Benito Mussolini and Silvio Berlusconi toghether were ditching there mistresses.

I have looked up there releases over the past few years and it seems that there releases/product is much stabeler now, so I will give it the good old college try! :-)

Have you ever had a look at BiglyBT, the successor of Vuze, but without bloat? –> https://www.biglybt.com/

What is the opinion of other people concerning BiglyBT? As far as I can see from my own tests, it looks quite good.

BiglyBT is okay, has lots of functions, but it’s built in Java (like its predecessor) and therefore quite slow and kludgy.

Get with the times Shinto, The “Java is slow & heavy” is so 2000s, now we have the “Electron-based apps have high CPU/RAM usage” which is equally silly as an argument considering that nowadays most of us have super fast multi core computers with huge amounts of ram.

I have used the latest BiglyBT version on my high-end laptop for a few days. Jave is still slow, still heavy, and still the same as it was in the 2000s.

I agree with Shinto, Java apps still feel pretty unresponsive to me, even in 2020. It’s okay during routine use, but once a Java app is busy under some load, it becomes very hard to try and intervene.
