Mozilla will release a new stable version of its Firefox web browser on October 13, 2020. Firefox 81.0.2 is a minor browser update that fixes a connectivity issue on Twitter that exists in previous versions of the web browser. The issue may prevent Firefox users from using the social messaging service.

The new version of Firefox is not available yet but will be released later today. Firefox 81.0.2 will be offered via the web browser's automatic updating functionality and also on the Mozilla website as a direct download (either full download or stub download that requires Internet connectivity). Both versions will upgrade existing stable installations of Firefox on the system when they are executed.

firefox 81.0.2

Firefox 81.0.2 addresses the Twitter issue only; users who don't use Twitter are in no rush to update to the new version, especially since the next major release, Firefox 82, is expected to be released on October 20, 2020.

Firefox users who do use Twitter may have encountered the following error message when using the site:

firefox twitter network protocol violation

The site at https* has experienced a network protocol violation that cannot be repaired.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because an error in the date transmission was detected.

Please contact the website owners to inform them about the problem.

Mozilla engineers discovered that the issue is caused by Service Workers not working correctly. A temporary workaround was published quickly that required the following steps:

  1. Load about:serviceworkers in the Firefox address bar to display the list of available Service Workers.
  2. Select "Unregister" next to the Twitter service worker.

Twitter should load fine the next time the site is opened in the Firefox web browser.

Firefox 81.0.2 addresses the issue so that Firefox users who use the version of the browser can use Twitter without receiving the network protocol violation error message.

Keep an eye on the official release notes; they are not published yet but will be later today.

Now You: do you use Twitter?

No, I don’t use twitter. It was intended to be disposable but so many users take it seriously it has weird effects. Extremely high gullibility factor.

High ranking gov’t officials get fired on twitter? Countries are “led” on twitter? Misinformation groups bombard it until obvious nonsense becomes true? Maybe a good thing is kids don’t do much there.

Not as creepy as Facebook by any means, though.

Anyway, I have service workers enabled but none are registered.

It’s not instant? It’s instant for me. Maybe because of “preferes reduced motion”.

Have not seen that error on Twitter which I only use to view (no account myself) severe weather coverage (from a local renowned meteorologist) as well as occasionally some comedy/parody stuff. Otherwise I try to avoid the rest of it as it’s just a cesspool of negativity and political B.S.

      @ Herman and Mothy

Your comments are completely correct. I have blocked all the “social interaction” sites on my Laptop.

It is a pity that the Donald does not, :)

I view Twitter not working as very much a feature, not a bug. I work hard to keep my mind uncluttered from imbecility and nonsense, so keeping Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, Reddit, et. al., blocked is a no brainer. For the rare times I need to see something informative on one of those sites (e.g., I spent this summer on an island, and there is a freight boat that uses Twitter to tell you when it is arriving at the dock), I use my third browser (Vivaldi) which is set to delete all cookies on exiting.

You do not use Firefox. Therefore why are you making derogatory comments about FF.

Also, you must spend your days searching the Internet for negative articles about FF.

If so, that is very sad.

Twitter only via Nitter (alternative Twitter front-end) with one of its instances [https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/wiki/Instances], redirected with Firefox’s ‘Privacy Redirect’ extension. Allows to only read twits and useful for those who don’t participate to social networks yet appreciate to be able to read several sites’ Tweet pages, more for information then for followers’ comments by the way.

From there on I’ll wait for Firefox 82.0 and skip this last-minute 81.0.2

I found this issue both on the PC and the browser and fixed it by simply erasing all the cookie and site data from Twitter and then refreshing with Ctrl-F5. Simply bypassing the cache fixed it for me.

Not sins 2009 when more and more the conversions starting to sound more and more like “Mr.”D. J.Trump has nowadays, on Twitter. This is because I think it is a waste of my time listening to hollow barrels.

Twitter is an incredibly useful site.

If you want to be involved with a mob of depressed, unhinged online psychopaths.

Still saner than TikTok and Reddit, of course.

I had an account, which I think I created for some game to tweet and get rewards, then I didn’t use it and deleted it.

Recently there was a givaway that I wanted to be part of that required following twitter accounts for increased chance of success, so I created and empty twitter account just for that and possible future giveaways, that’s the only way I would “use” twitter, other than that it is useless garbage.

Same with facebook, but that one is rarely used in giveaways and games anymore and creating a fake empty account there just for that is not possible anymore, so I wouldn’t bother with something as degraded as social networks.

I only use Reddit, but most of the subreddits I joined are about games so I’m isolated from all the mainstream crap there and I only visit it for like 20 minutes per day. I also have Discord for some gaming communities that I’m part of and chatting with some people, but other than that I’m not really on any social media, at least not with my real name and identity.

Last I had a real facebook account was in 2014 for some study purposes, but when that failed, I deleted my account and never returned.

Twitter can be an excellent platform, as long as you systematically block and/or mute all the nutjobs, and are very picky about who you follow.
