Ghacks is a technology news blog that was founded in 2005 by Martin Brinkmann. It has since then become one of the most popular tech news sites on the Internet with five authors and regular contributions from freelance writers.
The page form doesn’t work. I got the message “Sorry, the service is unavailable.” I’ve written to their support and am waiting for a reply.
The people at botguard got back to me within an hour and helped me solve the problem. Great service!
After a bit of research into StartHost.co (be careful, there’s a different webhosting company called “StartHosts.com”), I decided to take the plunge. I registered my new .eu domain with a different company, and I was ready to go within an hour.
My new site (so far, just a “welcome” page) was up and running about 30 minutes later. Just for the record, I’ve set up websites before, and this was really easy.
As mentioned, the StartHost.co support desk (see my previous comments) helped me overcome a problem in the purchase process – which I must confess was due to a setting on my Win 7 computer. A couple of other post-purchase inquiries were also dealt with expeditiously.
Having said this, they offer neither telephone nor live-chat support. You have to open a ticket and wait for a reply, but this only took about 30 minutes. If you’re running a mission-critical website, this wouldn’t be adequate in my opinion, but you get what you pay for.
Their user control panel is pretty well laid out, and the free SSL certificate was in place in a flash. I haven’t tried to set up email yet.
To be honest, I basically signed up in order to have a cloud back-up for family pictures, videos, etc. For this purpose, their hardware seems really fast, and I was able to upload about 5Gb of data within about 3 hours (Theoretically, I have 40mbs upload from my provider, but I usually only get about 30.)
As Martin mentioned, “The lifetime plan for $29.99 supports 1 domain name and 5 subdomain, gets you 5 email addresses, and unlimited storage / bandwidth. Other benefits include an integrated free content delivery network, SSD hosting for that extra boost of speed, free SSL certificates for security purposes, and IPv6 support.”
For the price, it seems like a reasonably good deal if your needs are relatively basic.
Your mileage may vary.
