Do this if you don't receive WhatsApp Broadcast Messages (anymore)

I bought a new Google Pixel 3a recently as my trusted Nokia 5 Android phone was showing signs of age. I wanted to stick with Nokia initially but none of the phones that were available at the time looked attractive enough and I did not want to wait anymore.

Google unveiled the Pixel 3a and I made the decision to pick it instead. More expensive than what I usually paid for a phone but it offered all the things that I liked (including a small form factor).

I transferred data from the old to the new device and restored a WhatsApp backup on the new device as well to restore chat and contacts.

One thing that I noticed after a couple of days of using the new device was that I did not receive any Broadcast messages anymore. Broadcasts differ from group chats in one key thing: instead of allowing anyone to post messages that everyone else in a group can read and reply to, messages flow only between the broadcast operator and individuals. The operator can send out messages to everyone while subscribers only to the broadcast operator.

I'm subscribed to two broadcast channels -- completely different topics unrelated to tech -- and while these two channels did not broadcast every day, the absence of any message over a long period of time was puzzling at first.

The channels were still listed in WhatsApp and I could scroll through the history. I spend some time troubleshooting the issue and discovered that the two broadcast channels were not listed as contacts on the device.

Only contacts who have added you to their phone's address book will receive your broadcast message. If your contact is not getting your broadcast messages, check to make sure they have added you to their address book. Broadcast Lists are a one-to-many communication.

I made the decision to give this a try by adding one of the channels as a contact to see if it would resolve the issue.

I received the first message shortly after I added the phone number of the channel to the contacts.  It appears, that WhatsApp requires that both the broadcast provider and the subscriber have added the other's phone number to the contacts.

Here is how you can find out if you have a broadcast provider in the contacts list on your Android device:

  1. Open the WhatsApp Messenger on the device and there the broadcast provider message history (you should have at least sent a message with the subscribe keyword).
  2. Tap on the three dots at the top to open the menu.
    1. If you see "Add to contacts": Broadcaster is not listed as a contact and you cannot receive messages because of this.
    2. If you see "View contact": Broadcaster is listed as a contact and you should receive messages.

To resolve this, simply select "Add to contacts" > "Create a new contact", type a name, and hit save.

I was using watsup broadcaste from few months and it was working fine. But recently my messages are not delivering to most of the contacts in my broadcast list. All contacts used to receive it before. I already updated my watsup and also deleted the broadcast list and created a new one but still it is not delivering.

Is there anyway to fix it!!!

It seems like the problem with contacts on broadcast groups not receiving messages comes from way back. I never had this problem until a week ago. Now suddenly some contacts are not receiving messages. I DON’T however see any comments or solutions to this problem from Whatsapp themself

Good Evening, we have the same problem. Does somebody know if that problem is already fixed by Whatapps? And if we can follow maybe somewhere a ticket/bugreport from whatsapp?

Take the latest WhatsApp app update from the whichever store and then create a new broadcast group with the same members and you set! A rolling screenshot of the existing members viewed on another phone helps in recreating the member list. Best of luck!

    Same broadcast problem.
My whatsapp was updated few days back, since then my broadcast message is not being delivered to all in group. I have a list of 50 contacts in broadcast group the message I send is delivered to only 5 person. If I check the satus/info of message it shows it is delivered to most of them, but actually except for 5 person no one receives the message.

This is frustrating that Facebook is forever making changes, without telling us about it! ( I use WhatsApp business and used to send broadcasts to people who do not have my number in their contacts. Now, I have to change all that broadcast lists to groups! And there was no message from WhatsApp about this! I am sitting here redfaced as I was asking my colleagues to please open the messages from this new number and they were like “what messages?”.

I have a different problem. I have recently converted my whatsapp to a business whatsapp and contacts who were previously receiving messages from me are now not receiving the broadcasts messages until I message them personally. I have over 12k contacts. I cannot check each contact individually. How do I solve this

    Hey there,

I have a question about statuses and Broadcasting messages on WhatsApp,

While I can see my contacts’ statuses, which means they have already saved my phone number on their devices, my broadcasted messages are NOT delivered to them, which means they have NOT saved my phone number on their devices. How is it possible?

Yeah I agree with the first comment; don’t use WhatsApp!

For iOS, stick to iMessage and Signal.
For android, stick to Signal and something else like perhaps Telegram.

Either way, always have Signal installed!

Google Pixel 3a phone has a good camera but no sdcard slot.
I am not happy about any of the current phones.
But the Asus Zenfone 6 ZS630KL looks like one of the lesser evils.
It has a 5,000 mAh battery, sdcard slot for up to 1TB, no notch, headphone jack, 1080 x 2340px IPS HDR10 LCD screen (no OLED that degrades in time), a good rear camera, 6-8 GB RAM, Snapdragon 855, etc. Price is around 500 euros.

Another good phone is the Yezz Epic T.
This rugged phone has a 9000 mAh battery and cost about 250 euros.
But it had Android 7 at launch in 2018 and I dont’t know how good their upgrade policy is.

Surprised to learn you use WhatsApp after the security breach and learning about the data sharing agreement they have with parent company Facebook. Seems a bit odd after reading all the privacy-security focused articles posted.

In this case, “encryption-privacy” is an oxymoron at best.
