Apple drops Windows XP and Vista iTunes Store support

Apple announced recently that it would introduce security changes to the iTunes Store on May 25, 2018, which prevent PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista from using the store.

Windows XP and Vista users may continue using older versions of iTunes installed on devices, but these versions will be feature limited. New purchases or downloads of already purchased items are no longer possible after the upgrade.

Windows XP or Vista users who use iTunes won't be able to re-download purchased items anymore on these devices. Apple's decision could lead to a situation where a customer can't download music, movies or other content anymore on iTunes that was bought in the past.

itunes xp vista

Customers may play music and other content that is locally available on previous versions of iTunes on Windows XP or Windows Vista, however.

Customers may want to download all purchased items to the local system for safekeeping. It may also be a good idea to back up the data so that a means of restoration is available. Affected customers have until May 25, 2018 to download any items that are not stored on the local system running XP or Vista already.

Apple notes that the iTunes Store requires the latest version of iTunes and Windows 7 or newer versions of Windows to make purchases from the store or download previously purchased items to the local system.

Windows XP and Windows Vista are no longer supported by Microsoft. While that is the case, both operating systems are still in use and companies that track usage statistics see Windows XP at a market share around 4% and Windows Vista at around 1% .

Apple supported XP and Vista longer than Microsoft did. Other software companies have stopped support for Windows XP and Vista already as well or plan to do so.

Mozilla announced in 2017 to end Firefox support for XP and Vista in mid-2018, and Google cut off XP and Vista from using Chrome in April 2016, and from Google Drive on January 1, 2017 already.

Closing Words

Apple customers  who run XP or Vista and purchased media on the iTunes Store will be in a predicament once support stops for the operating systems. It may not be a big issue for iTunes customers who made no purchases on the iTunes Store but customers who made purchases, may lose access to the items they purchased.

There may be workarounds besides the rather obvious option to upgrade the PC to a supported operating system or migrate to a new device that supports the iTunes Store. Virtualization may be used to run the iTunes Store on a XP or Vista machine.

Now You: Do you use iTunes or other online stores?

I just had the screen of a 12 year old Macbook crap out on me. I had used that computer almost every day for 12 years and nothing else was wrong with it. I figure any product that works perfectly for 12 years is a good product. “ScrApple?” I don’t think so.

@jern – ““ScrApple?” I don’t think so.” – Yeah, scrApple is a little unnecessary, and i believe you. i have 2 Gateway’s that came with Windows XP that was manufactured in either 2004 or 2005 and they still work fine, except for the one i broke…..

Apple products aren’t that bad, they’re just not perfect, (in MY Opinion), that people make them out to be.

Instead you are never receiving any update for your Android phone and let your Windows PC update itself without asking you, while you are typing a message or text. Got it.

Apple haters are just ignorant people who don’t realize that other ecosystems also have certain advantages (seemless Sync being one of them).

@Appster – i don’t use a smartphone period, let alone an Android. i use a non-smartphone. i just make calls, send or receive a text, don’t use social media and don’t take selfies.

Apple hater? Nah, i just call it as i see it. Overpriced and under-powered. Yes, i know of their A10 chips or whatever their on now and it’s good, but they just started putting 3 gigs of RAM in their phones. Androids have 4, 6 to 8 gigs for the past couple years. Their screens have been shit, until their most recent release. They took out the headphone jack because of “Courage”, lol, courage….. Anyway, it’s the Apple way, penny pinch on everything and overcharge because people will camp out on public sidewalks outside of stores to get one to out nerd other Apple nerds that they over payed for an overpriced phone, it’s a joke, but somehow it’s reality.

And Yuliya is right, itunes is bloatware trash. i tried it out back on Windows XP, and it was loaded with bloatware. i would uninstall the other shit that came with it because it ran pointless processes. And every freaking time i ran it, it need to update, EVERY FREAKING TIME. And every time it updated it reinstalled the shit bloatware and you would have to re-un-install it, = TRASH.

And you type about Windows updating without asking? The shit itunes wouldn’t let you use it without updating it. Now, shit Apple isn’t even letting people download the music that they payed for? And you’re defending this shit company?

Overpaying for something because it has a bitten into piece of fruit on it. What a joke.

I think I need to clarify one thing or the other here:

        > Overpriced and under-powered.

        Overpriced? Yes. Underpowered? No.

Apple’s smartphone and tablet chips are top notch. In the iMacs and MacBook Pros, they are using the most recent Intel chips. Seriously, what else do you expect? “Underpowered”, what a joke… This can only come from a person who doesn’t know anything about their products.
By the way, regarding “overpriced”… The quality of their devices, particularly the build quality, is the best on the market by a long shot. Especially the display and trackpad of their laptops is the very best on the market. So, you are getting what you pay for.

        > Yes, i know of their A10 chips or whatever their on now and it’s good, but they just started putting 3 gigs of RAM in their phones. Androids have 4, 6 to 8 gigs for the past couple years.

Android eats RAM like crazy, while iOS doesn’t. It’s garbage collection is far more efficient. Nothing more to say. Android needs this amount of RAM to be at least ON PAR with iOS. Never mind, they are still losing out in the benchmarks. The iPhone 7 (2016) did in fact beat the most recent Galaxy S9 (2018). Pretty embarrassing for THE Android flagship. But since you are using a feature phone, this shouldn’t concern you too much, right? ;-)

        > Their screens have been shit, until their most recent release.

This is just not true. Samsung’s screens are way oversaturated, and are not reflecting colors accurately by any means. If you mistake that for “better quality”, then I don’t know what to say. Concerning the Macs… Show me a PC (PC, not only a monitor!!!) that is at least on par with them. Good luck finding one.

        > They took out the headphone jack because of “Courage”, lol, courage…..

They did it in order to sell more of their own headphones, not because of “courage”. That being said, I am criticizing it as well.

        > Anyway, it’s the Apple way, penny pinch on everything and overcharge because people will camp out on public sidewalks outside of stores to get one to out nerd other Apple nerds that they over payed for an overpriced phone, it’s a joke, but somehow it’s reality.

One customer, even 20 customers out of the million people buying these devices sure is representative. Can’t take you serious on this one.

        > And Yuliya is right, itunes is bloatware trash.

It is not any more or less bloatware than the Windows Media Player, if you ask me. They are at equal footing functionally.

        > i tried it out back on Windows XP, and it was loaded with bloatware.

Apple doesn’t produce good Windows software. Can’t blame them for that, as I also wouldn’t support the competition if I were in their shoes. Microsoft retorts by making the Mac version of their Office as bad as possible. Believe it or not, iTunes is nice and responsive on the Mac. Furthermore, I don’t think you should write anything about iTunes when you haven’t actually used it in 10+ years.

        > i would uninstall the other shit that came with it because it ran pointless processes. And every freaking time i ran it, it need to update, EVERY FREAKING TIME. And every time it updated it reinstalled the shit bloatware and you would have to re-un-install it, = TRASH.

To keep things short and simple, you forgot to uncheck the boxes of other Apple software that was offered. Accepted.

        > And you type about Windows updating without asking?

Yeah, Windows 10 does exactly that. My Mac never did.

        > The shit itunes wouldn’t let you use it without updating it.

Are you trying to say that iTunes wouldn’t even start up without updating it? If so, that’s just incorrect.

        > Now, shit Apple isn’t even letting people download the music that they payed for?

You can still download music from the iTunes Store. Apple is just stopping support for outdated OSes 11 years old (Vista) and 17 years old (XP). Can’t say I blame them for that.

        > And you’re defending this shit company?

Sure, due to the competition being way worse. Google and Microsoft, do I need to say more? If I wanted a spyware infested OS that downloads potentially buggy updates all by itself, or another spyware infested mobile OS that never gets updates whatsoever, I would have bought one.

        > Overpaying for something because it has a bitten into piece of fruit on it. What a joke.

I did not pay for the logo, but okay. What kind of argument is that supposed to be?

@Appster – “Apple’s smartphone and tablet chips are top notch.” i did say they were good…

“This can only come from a person who doesn’t know anything about their products.” – Yeah, nothing about them, absolutely nothing, lol.

“The quality of their devices, particularly the build quality, is the best on the market by a long shot.” – So you didn’t have that antenna issue where you had to hold your iPhone a certain way? Or you didn’t have your iPhone bend in your pocket? You used a case then? Your shit battery didn’t only last a year tops and your iPhone wasn’t throttled by iOS to try and make you by a new iPhone at ridiculous prices? Or your Overpriced Home Pod that doesn’t have Bluetooth, doesn’t have any plugs to plug something into it and can’t use Spotify unless you use Airplay, it hasn’t discolored your coffee table yet? Oh, you were lucky enough to have placed it on a Glass table ?

“But since you are using a feature phone, this shouldn’t concern you too much, right?” – i think you meant “aren’t”, but actually i do use some “feature” phones. i own a couple of Android phones, one of which i put Cyanogen MOD on, and even a Windows Phone. i actually don’t use them that much, just use them around the house. in my other comment i meant as my actual phone i carry around, what some call “daily driver”, i didn’t make that clear, oh well.

“Their screens have been shit, until their most recent release.

This is just not true. Samsung’s screens are way oversaturated, and are not reflecting colors accurately by any means. If you mistake that for “better quality”, then I don’t know what to say.” – Did they start putting 720p screens on there phones yet? Androids and Windows phones have had 1080p, 1440p screens, OLED displays for years. Sony released a phone with an actual 4K screen. You can get a Razer phone which is an Android phone with a 120HZ display.-(Yes, i know their newest Overpriced iPads have 120HZ refresh rates). Do Apple still sell extremely overpriced laptops with 480p webcams?….. lol.

“They took out the headphone jack because of “Courage”, lol, courage…..

They did it in order to sell more of their own headphones, not because of “courage”. – Not according to what that goofball on stage said. You can YouTube it, but i know you don’t need to….. “That being said, I am criticizing it as well.” – We agree.

“One customer, even 20 customers out of the million people buying these devices sure is representative. Can’t take you serious on this one.” – You mean the 20+ people camping out in the cold on a sidewalk in a line stretching down the street starting from the front of an Apple store, make that many Apple store across the country? You might not take me “serious on this one” but i don’t take all those people serious either. Unless,….. the news stations are hiring actors…..

“i would uninstall the other shit that came with it because it ran pointless processes.

Accepted.” – lol, boxes have nothing to do with the bloatware i’m talking about. i’m talking about the bloatware that’s installed and Process’ that run for no reason, like “iPhone Helper”, “Bonjour” = TRASH. This particular trash could be found in the Task Manager and Uninstall a program in the Control Panel.

“The shit itunes wouldn’t let you use it without updating it.

Are you trying to say that iTunes wouldn’t even start up without updating it? If so, that’s just incorrect.” – No, i said nothing about not starting up, i said it wouldn’t let me use it. As in, launch it, “There is a Software Update Available” and if i didn’t update it i couldn’t play music with it, it had to be updated. Don’t know if they fixed that eventually but that was my experience.

“Now, shit Apple isn’t even letting people download the music that they payed for?

You can still download music from the iTunes Store. Apple is just stopping support for outdated OSes 11 years old (Vista) and 17 years old (XP). Can’t say I blame them for that.” – That’s not what this articles states. –

        “Closing Words

Apple customers who run XP or Vista and purchased media on the iTunes Store will be in a predicament once support stops for the operating systems. It may not be a big issue for iTunes customers who made no purchases on the iTunes Store but customers who made purchases, may lose access to the items they purchased.” Hmm, “may lose access to the items they purchased.” An Apple user, “Can’t say I blame them for that.”

“And you’re defending this shit company?

Sure, due to the competition being way worse. Google and Microsoft, do I need to say more? If I wanted a spyware infested OS that downloads potentially buggy updates all by itself,” – You really think Apple doesn’t collect any data on you? lol. And i’m sure ios or a Mac has never had a bug, lol.

“or another spyware infested mobile OS that never gets updates whatsoever” One of the Android phones i have here, Samsung Galaxy S5 was definitely updated last year, as i clicked “Update Now”.

Well, with all this typed, i HATE Google, and i’m a dumb-ass that has a couple Androids here.

i might not like Apple and their way of business, “Manufacture cheap, remove features, remove headphone jacks, have very few ports on our overpriced laptops and charge ridiculous prices for dongles, throw in 480p webcams on top of it, have shit batteries in our overpriced phones and will throttle the phones on top of it because Apple users are known to be gullible and always want the newest phones so we’ll try and get them to buy a new one every year instead of every 2 or 3 years because it’s not like we ever built a phone where a customer could buy a new battery and replace it themselves but they could pay us $79 to do it for them, and then charge as much as people will pay for anything Apple”.

But i will eventually buy another Smartphone and i would actually like it be an iPhone or a Windows Phone since i don’t want anything to do with Google. if i had to have any data on me mined i would rather it be Apple or Microsoft over Google, and i would rather it be Apple over Microsoft because they act like they’re trying to be the next Google. But my main gripe with iOS is having to rely on iTunes for music. i can connect an Android and Windows phone to my laptop and transfer/copy music freely but with an iPhone i have to use iTunes, hell no. Yeah, i hate iTunes that much. i could also buy a newer Android phone and put LineageOS on it.

Regardless, i cannot believe i just typed this much and am ending this reply.

@Appster – i think it was more than 1% of the iPhone users that had antenna problems, but i’m not gonna do research on it or look for any links. it’s a waste of time bro.

i saw plenty of the bend tests on YouTube and that iPhone performed worse than the phones they put up against it. The Samsungs and the other phones, HTC and whatever did not crack. Regardless, quite a few people was having bend problems just having it in their pocket and that’s unacceptable and you know it.

“So they sacrificed a few benchmark points in favor of battery life. This is not why the iPhones got slower, though. It should be clear that an iPhone with 512 MB RAM (iPhone 4, 2010) can’t handle the visual effects of iOS 7+. The OS being more demanding and feature-loaded is the reason why they get slower, not a minuscule amount of points in the benchmark, LOL.” You are exaggerating and not being truthful. You know damn well this was a bigger problem that they did to entice users to buy more phones, lol. There’s videos on YouTube of people showing their older iPhones and they’re shutting off from anything demanding or multitasking. That’s embarrassing from a $1,000 smartphone. Androids and Windows phones that have 4 and 8 cores and have very much used batteries don’t do that. Laptops don’t either. i have a 2004 or 2005 Windows XP Gateway laptop and the original battery still works and the laptop doesn’t throttle or doesn’t shut off because i played a video. And you’re talking about Apple “sacrificed a few benchmark points”? That comical and you know it. Why would Apple come out with an apology and say they weren’t forthcoming and should’ve been more clear, they’ll release an update to address the issue and dropping in store battery replacements from $79 to $29? i can’t believe your arguing this.

“Your point being…?” – Apple can be a shit company…

“Seriously, my dear Rick, at least Apple hasn’t produced products that blow up in your face (Note 7)” – That’s a good and i won’t argue that, lol. BUT, there has been some cases of iPhone catching on fire as well, but ANY device with a lithium battery can do this as i think it’s one in a million lithium ion batteries can catch fire, something like that, but the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 took it to another level.
“or get slower without even updating them (Android, Windows in general).” – i’ve never really experienced this on Windows or Android. Maybe a little on my Windows XP but can’t say for sure. But i’m sure people have experienced this.

“So that hackjob project is your last resort when manufacturers fail to update your phone? My bad.” – Cyanogen has some different features than stock android and has better privacy. it’s abandoned now so you would go Lineage OS instead, but it’s no difference in people jail breaking their ios devices, people wanna be free from the iOS jail/wall and do more with their devices since Apple won’t let them do certain thing with their iOS devices that they paid their hard earned money for. Things someone might want to jail break their iOS device is to be able to run emulators.

        “and even a Windows Phone

Dead on arrival, anyone?” – i don’t care what anyone says, if someone doesn’t care about having a hundred apps on their phone, Windows phone WILL get the job done, and it’s not Google…..

“But you realize that the human eye is unable to see any pixel on a screen with a pixel density >300 ppi, right? The iPhone has >300 ppi since 2010. Everything else is just a waste of battery. You are not going to see the difference, unless you are a cyborg.
Rick, it’s getting embarrassing.” – lol, apparently iPhone screens have never gotten any better with every release or have only had 300 ppi.
        iPhone X = 458 ppi
        iPhone 8 Plus = 408 ppi
        iPhone 8 326 ppi
        iPhone 7 Plus = 401 ppi
        iPhone 7 = 326 ppi
        iPhone 6 Plus = 401 ppi
        iPhone 6 S = 326 ppi
        iPhone SE = 326 ppi
Where are you getting 300 ppi since 2010 from? Here – https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/
You’re right App, “it’s getting embarrassing” lol. i’m just trying to figure out why Apple would improve the iPhones screen over their releases if “the human eye is unable to see any pixel on a screen with a pixel density >300 ppi”? “Everything else is just a waste of battery. You are not going to see the difference, unless you are a cyborg.” – Apple disagrees with you App. Humans can spot and appreciate a good screen, especially when they Pinch To Zoom in…..

“which tablet (apart from the Surface, maybe) has that amazing build quality? Are you kidding me? Ever looked at the miserable state of Android tablets in the past few years? When Sony left the Android tablet market, the last properly built ones went extinct. The rest is plastic crap.” – i don’t own a tablet as i don’t need one, but my niece and nephews, dad and grandmother own tablets that happen to be Android. There build quality happens to be decent as i know my niece and nephews tablets have been dropped a few times as i have seen them drop them and they’re still ticking, only 2 of them are Samsung. This build quality argument is goofy. Unless you’re referring to how they “Feel’ in the hands, well who is paying for the feel ?

“Do Apple still sell extremely overpriced laptops with 480p webcams?

480p? What are you smoking? The 2000s are over, Rick. Apple has better webcams than that.” – lol, here you go – https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Apple+Laptops+Have+480p+Webcams

Here’s the same Words searched on Google, for an lol – https://www.google.com/search?source=hp&ei=d0GdWoqVL6W8ggfM4LawDQ&q=Apple+Laptops+Have+480p+Webcams

So uh, “480p? What are you smoking? The 2000s are over, Rick. Apple has better webcams than that.” – You’re either not a good liar or you’re just not as knowledgeable on Apple as you think you are.

“If it were so important, why do the iPhones still sell like sliced bread?” – Apple has a following. Some Fanboy’s. Apple was the first to sell decent smartphones and it got people hooked. Plus some like their Operating Systems and there “Ease of use”…..

“You are probably also mad that 1080p iTunes content doesn’t play on your Windows 95 machine, right?” – No, you’re reaching. if you read the previous posts you will see NOTHING would play for me if i didn’t update it every time i launched it, not even music on CD’s that i owned that i ripped to my hard drive. And this was Windows XP, not Windows 95. This was my experience. Maybe it was the same for everyone, or maybe it was a glitch i experienced. Maybe it was a bad install. But this was my experience.

“just not on a stone age PC with unsupported OS that wouldn’t play most video content anyway.” i can play “modern” video content as well, such as HTML 5 video on YouTube, on Firefox, so uh, i don’t know what you’re talking about, unless you’re talking about the processors or OS not supporting VP9 with hardware acceleration. i believe a browser like Chrome would do it natively.

“have very few ports on our overpriced laptops

USB-C is meant as a universal port, and there are four of them.” – Again, apparently i’m more knowledgeable than the Apple user you are. There were laptops that had 1, yes 1 port and people was complaining about not even being able to charge it while they had something else plugged in, UNLESS they buy an overpriced dongle from Apple, or an overpriced dongle from a third party. There’ reviews on YouTube about it, people make meme’s about it. You might not acknowledge that you know this to defend Apple but you do. Even the newest iPhone X has quick charging but you have to buy a cable to use that quick charging, they won’t even include that freaking cable, what a joke company.

“throw in 480p webcams on top of it

That’s factually incorrect, Rick. I hope you know that.” – Okay, i’ll include the links again for you for your convenience App – https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Apple+Laptops+Have+480p+Webcams

        https://www.google.com/search?source=hp&ei=d0GdWoqVL6W8ggfM4LawDQ&q=Apple+Laptops+Have+480p+Webcams

“have shit batteries in our overpriced phones

Also false. See any iPhone Plus series battery statistics in particular.” – Yup, false. But for some reason after about only a year the OS throttles the phones or just shuts off, you know, to get people to spend money on an upgrade…..

“throttle the phones on top of it because Apple users are known to be gullible

So you are saying that a few benchmark points are worth more than a good battery life over the years. Sure, Rick, sure… By the way, you can disable the throttling if you don’t care about your battery, starting with iOS 11.3.” – lmfao, throttling and shutting a device off somehow in 2017 and 2018 = “a few benchmark points” and also = Apple releasing a response, apology, dropping the prices of in store battery replacements from $79 to $29 and an OS Update to address the issue. Oh, and i believe people filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. Do you wear your Apple cape to bed App ?

“it’s not like we ever built a phone where a customer could buy a new battery

Which Android flagship has a removable battery in 2017? You look at a general market trend, stretching over every single manufacturer, and blame Apple.” – A trend that’s geared towards pushing new device purchasing, that is inspired from companies seeing Apple gets away with it, but to answer your question there is non iPhones that have removable batteries. Some you will say that they aren’t “Flagships”, but they are capable phones. – https://thedroidguy.com/2018/01/5-best-android-smartphones-with-removable-battery-in-2018-1062773
i see phone reviews and there’s a few here and there that will include a removable battery, and even include a Headphone Jack…..

“But my main gripe with iOS is having to rely on iTunes for music.

You can download music on the iPhone directly. You also don’t need iTunes for setting up the phone. You don’t need it to update your phone. At most, you need it to backup your phone, if you don’t use iCloud.” Can you supply a link, tutorial video on how this is done? This is all i can find, and it involves installing third party software, which is a joke. – https://www.imobie.com/support/how-to-transfer-music-from-laptop-to-iphone.htm

https://www.easeus.com/iphone-data-transfer/how-to-transfer-music-from-laptop-to-iphone.html – i will NOT use itunes or third party software to transfer my already owned music from my laptop to a Phone.

“i can connect an Android and Windows phone to my laptop and transfer/copy music freely but with an iPhone i have to use iTunes, hell no. Yeah, i hate iTunes that much.

There is a reason why Apple chose iTunes over the normal explorer. They didn’t want people to insert files that the iPhone can’t display via the normal Windows file explorer. Makes sense to me. Transferring a Word document without having an app that can view Word documents sure would disappoint some people.” = Awful Apple excuse.

        @Rick A:

        > i saw plenty of the bend tests on YouTube and that iPhone performed worse than the phones they put up against it. The Samsungs and the other phones, HTC and whatever did not crack. Regardless, quite a few people was having bend problems just having it in their pocket and that’s unacceptable and you know it.

Again, the pressure you would need to put on the iPhone in order to make it bend is considerable. That doesn’t happen by chance. No way. Referring to YouTube testers hell-bent and determined to break it doesn’t help your argument.

        > There’s videos on YouTube of people showing their older iPhones and they’re shutting off from anything demanding or multitasking. That’s embarrassing from a $1,000 smartphone.

Again, should a 2013 phone like the iPhone 5S shut down (never happened to me, by the way – still using it occasionally) then this is unfortunate. Not going to argue with that. But, iPhones randomly shutting down doesn’t seem to be a major problem. There is comparatively few info on that behavior on the web (except those who did brick their devices while trying to jailbreak it – has nothing to do with the battery), so not sure where you got that extreme example from. iPhones usually do not shut down because of YouTube, seriously. Not even extremely old ones.

        > Apple won’t let them do certain thing with their iOS devices that they paid their hard earned money for.

People should be informed what the iPhone is capable of when they buy it. Whatever percentage of people feel the need to jailbreak it, this number should be below 1% of all iOS users. The pressure to do a jailbreak just isn’t there as it seems.

        > lol, apparently iPhone screens have never gotten any better with every release or have only had 300 ppi.

Again, Rick, you won’t see any pixel when a screen is above 300 ppi. Your eyes are not capable of that, mine neither. Accept this fact and move on.

        > i’m just trying to figure out why Apple would improve the iPhones screen over their releases if “the human eye is unable to see any pixel on a screen with a pixel density >300 ppi”?

They always had 326 ppi, not more. Except for the Plus models, as they wanted a 1080p resolution there. Since iTunes content is 1080p, the processor doesn’t need to upscale or downscale that content anymore, but can display it natively. That was their reason. But then, you won’t see a pixel at 300 ppi, and you won’t see a pixel at 400 ppi. Your point being, Rick? The larger battery in the Plus models does compensate for the “higher” resolution (which you don’t see).

        > Where are you getting 300 ppi since 2010 from?

The iPhone 4 released in 2010. It has the same pixel density as the iPhone SE, which you had listed. And I quote: “In his keynote speech presenting the iPhone 4, Jobs said the handset’s display had a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, exceeding the limit of the human retina.” Noticed the “EXCEEDS the LIMIT of the human retina” part, Rick? You are not going to see a difference if a screen has an even higher resolution, unless you are – I repeat – a cyborg.

        source: https://www.wired.com/2010/06/iphone-4-retina-2/

        > Humans can spot and appreciate a good screen, especially when they Pinch To Zoom in…..

You may spot a difference in color saturation and accuracy, but NOT in resolution, as you are unable to see the difference there – provided the screens you compare are both > 300 ppi.

Samsung charges $650 for plastic-littered inferior build quality, Apple charges $800 for aluminium build + better speakers, 120 hz screen, better processor etc. Doesn’t seem unfair to me. Compare that Samsung crap to any iPad, any Surface, any former Sony Tablet (especially the beautiful Z4). Samsung puts out cheap rubbish and charges almost the same price as Apple does for an iPad Pro. LOL, I wouldn’t buy that.

        > 480p webcam

Oh, so you were talking about the baseline MacBook? The extremely thin, baseline one? If so, then yeah, that is not very good indeed. I must say that I did not invest any time to inform myself about that model, so I stand corrected. I am only interested in the actual MacBook Pro (= the real deal), and it doesn’t have 480p webcam. Notice that the MacBook Pro is actually cheaper than the lower end MacBook? So I don’t know why you are bashing the low end model so much, when the higher end models are the ones you should review (especially considering the non-existing price difference). I am not saying the MacBook camera is any good, quite the contrary, but this discussion is pretty pointless when the MacBook Pro is out there for the same or lower price.

        > Apple has a following. Some Fanboy’s. Apple was the first to sell decent smartphones and it got people hooked.

Yep, that explains the number of phones they sell. Dream on.

        > i can play “modern” video content as well, such as HTML 5 video on YouTube, on Firefox, so uh, i don’t know what you’re talking about,

Show me the typical Windows XP 2001 – 2006 machine that does 1080p at a satisfactory level. Most PCs used to have 2 GB RAM at the time. Especially in the early 2000s. So, again, it is not reasonable to demand support for a 17 year old OS. Upgrade it for a few bucks and be done with it. Apple doesn’t delete your purchase history, it just refuses to further support a truly ancient OS. Why would they?

        > Again, apparently i’m more knowledgeable than the Apple user you are. There were laptops that had 1, yes 1 port and people was complaining about not even being able to charge it while they had something else plugged in,

Keep on bashing the low end MacBook model that actually sells for a higher price than the real deal (MacBook Pro). What’s the point? The MacBook is ultra-thin, how many ports do you expect to fit in there? If you take issue with the single port at the low end model, then buy a better MacBook Pro for less money.

        > Yup, false. But for some reason after about only a year the OS throttles the phones or just shuts off, you know, to get people to spend money on an upgrade…..

You shouldn’t buy into any ferry tail. The phones do not just quit and shut down after a year. If they did, there would be considerable outrage. You are spewing fake news. Some people use iPhones for 5+ years without a single issue. The average time people use Apple products is 4 years: http://appleinsider.com/articles/18/03/01/analyst-estimates-average-lifespan-for-all-apple-devices-at-over-four-years How would that work out if you were correct?

        > “a few benchmark points” and also = Apple releasing a response, apology, dropping the prices of in store battery replacements from $79 to $29 and an OS Update to address the issue. Oh, and i believe people filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. Do you wear your Apple cape to bed App ?

Again, the processor performance is demanding for a built-in battery. For ANY built-in battery. Feel free to disable the throttling, my dear Rick. Your battery life will be very pleased about it. And yeah, it actually comes down to a few benchmark points. Phones shutting down randomly is untrue. Again, if that were a real issue in the wild, the support forums would be full of it. They aren’t… So, how many people do you think actually had their phone shut down unexpectedly? The shitstorm about the throttling was considerable, nevertheless, hence Apple’s reaction in order to quell it. Again, those idiots can disable the throttling with the next update, just to cry about worse battery life soon after.

        > A trend that’s geared towards pushing new device purchasing, that is inspired from companies seeing Apple gets away with it,

LOL, give me a break. Of course Apple has to be still somewhat worse than all other companies doing the exact same thing. Accept that this is a general negative market trend and move on.

        > Some you will say that they aren’t “Flagships”, but they are capable phones.

Those phones do not even remotely compare to an iPhone. The actual “competition” also has non-removable batteries. This discussion is reaching a dead end, I feel.

        > Can you supply a link, tutorial video on how this is done? This is all i can find, and it involves installing third party software, which is a joke.

I mean, you can download purchased music or movies from the iTunes Store. Updates can be done OTA, and the iPhone has its own setup routine since iOS 5, so you don’t need iTunes for that either. You only strictly need iTunes for local backup, and for transferring files that do not come out of the iTunes Store.

        > i will NOT use itunes or third party software to transfer my already owned music from my laptop to a Phone.

Your choice. Using the Windows Explorer, using iTunes. Hardly makes a difference to me. But then, I have a Mac. iTunes comes preinstalled here anyway and updates itself in the background. So I don’t take issue with that.

        > Awful Apple excuse.

So you think that transferring files to the phone which it may not be able to display is an awesome idea? I don’t think so. Again, I don’t see the issue with iTunes. It makes sense to have a central management tool for the iPhone. The normal file explorer of Windows doesn’t cut it for the reason I mentioned, and it wouldn’t be appropriate anyway, as it can’t perform an iPhone backup or wireless sync, for which you would need iTunes anyway.

        @Rick A:

Seriously, some of the things you said still are not accurate or exaggerated. Let me show you:

        > So you didn’t have that antenna issue where you had to hold your iPhone a certain way?

Ah, so you mean the iPhone 4 (2010). While this was a manufacturing error, you had to hold the iPhone in a very unnatural arrangement of fingers to see this error. 99% of all customers probably never noticed, but sure that has to be a big deficit. Some people are using their iPhone 4 to this day.

        > Or you didn’t have your iPhone bend in your pocket? You used a case then?

Any device this thin, made out of metal, would bend if you try and put a certain amount of pressure on it. That’s physics. Apple can’t do anything about that, except make the device much thicker again. The back of Samsung’s plastic phones would just crack up with same amount of pressure. It’s on YouTube. Again, a problem that affected a minuscule amount of customers, and only if they tried hard enough.
Rick, are you trying to say that any and all devices can theoretically be physically destroyed? If so, I agree.

        > Your shit battery didn’t only last a year tops and your iPhone wasn’t throttled by iOS to try and make you by a new iPhone at ridiculous prices?

Seriously, Rick? The Plus series of the iPhone in particular have one of the longest-lasting batteries on the market. When it comes to the throttling, this was done in order to keep the battery life at the same level. Before you draw factually incorrect conclusions from that, let me tell you that all batteries decline in power over time. So they sacrificed a few benchmark points in favor of battery life. This is not why the iPhones got slower, though. It should be clear that an iPhone with 512 MB RAM (iPhone 4, 2010) can’t handle the visual effects of iOS 7+. The OS being more demanding and feature-loaded is the reason why they get slower, not a minuscule amount of points in the benchmark, LOL.

        > Or your Overpriced Home Pod that doesn’t have Bluetooth, doesn’t have any plugs to plug something into it and can’t use Spotify unless you use Airplay, it hasn’t discolored your coffee table yet?

I don’t like the HomePod either. But then, potential errors of the HomePod do not affect the iPhone, iPad or Mac in any way. Your point being…?

Seriously, my dear Rick, at least Apple hasn’t produced products that blow up in your face (Note 7), or get slower without even updating them (Android, Windows in general).

        > i own a couple of Android phones, one of which i put Cyanogen MOD on

So that hackjob project is your last resort when manufacturers fail to update your phone? My bad.

        > and even a Windows Phone

        Dead on arrival, anyone?

        > Did they start putting 720p screens on there phones yet? Androids and Windows phones have had 1080p, 1440p screens, (…) Sony released a phone with an actual 4K screen.

But you realize that the human eye is unable to see any pixel on a screen with a pixel density >300 ppi, right? The iPhone has >300 ppi since 2010. Everything else is just a waste of battery. You are not going to see the difference, unless you are a cyborg.
        Rick, it’s getting embarrassing.

        > OLED displays for years.

The burn-in effect sure is an accomplishment. Otherwise, highly oversaturated, as said.

        > Yes, i know their newest Overpriced iPads have 120HZ refresh rates

Overpriced? LOL, which tablet (apart from the Surface, maybe) has that amazing build quality? Are you kidding me? Ever looked at the miserable state of Android tablets in the past few years? When Sony left the Android tablet market, the last properly built ones went extinct. The rest is plastic crap. 4 speakers on the iPad Pro as well, its sound quality blows the miserable Samsung hardware out of the water. Its display, as well. Yeah, but sure overpriced when the Samsung one (that crap is arguably the best Android tablet today, yes) is $650 and the iPad Pro is $800. Okay.

        > Do Apple still sell extremely overpriced laptops with 480p webcams?

480p? What are you smoking? The 2000s are over, Rick. Apple has better webcams than that.

        > Not according to what that goofball on stage said. You can YouTube it, but i know you don’t need to…..

That was the marketing guy, so what do you expect? Do you expect him in all seriousness to say: We want to sell you more our headphones! Seriously, Rick? Of course he talks of courage and what not. However, the lack of a headphone doesn’t mean that the iPhone isn’t great hardware. If it were so important, why do the iPhones still sell like sliced bread?

        > No, i said nothing about not starting up, i said it wouldn’t let me use it. As in, launch it, “There is a Software Update Available” and if i didn’t update it i couldn’t play music with it, it had to be updated. Don’t know if they fixed that eventually but that was my experience.

I never experienced that, and I am using it since 2010. I always used it on a Mac, though.

        > An Apple user, “Can’t say I blame them for that.”

Again, you can’t expect any support, or download option, for OSes this old. You are probably also mad that 1080p iTunes content doesn’t play on your Windows 95 machine, right? Is it so hard to understand that some modern content just wouldn’t play on devices this old? It’s bad for those who still have such an ancient machine and never updated it, but then… Your purchase history doesn’t go away. You can still download that stuff, just not on a stone age PC with unsupported OS that wouldn’t play most video content anyway. And if they don’t offer video content there, why would they make a costly exception for music?

        > One of the Android phones i have here, Samsung Galaxy S5 was definitely updated last year, as i clicked “Update Now”.

You are really comparing a vastly delayed security-only update with the timely update support Apple delivers for phones even older than that? Apple even delivers new features every year. Yes, they might make the phone slightly slower, but at least they are up to date security-wise. Can’t say that about Android, still. This comparison is borderline ridiculous, Rick.

        > You really think Apple doesn’t collect any data on you? lol. And i’m sure ios or a Mac has never had a bug, lol.

No, I don’t think that Apple doesn’t collect any data on me. However, I had the option to opt-out of them tracking my movements across the iTunes Store and App Store, and had the option to install adblockers in Safari right away. Does Google let you use adblockers without root at this time? Have they removed the Ad ID of your Android phone already? Haha. And I think that Windows 10 telemetry is uglier than Mac telemetry by a long shot, yes. Windows 10 is the absolute worst.

        > Manufacture cheap

LOL. Look at that Samsung and Lenovo crap in comparison.

        > remove features

Seems to antagonize many people, hence the iPhone sales. I am not saying it’s a good thing, though.

        > have very few ports on our overpriced laptops

USB-C is meant as a universal port, and there are four of them.

        > charge ridiculous prices for dongles

If you still need a dongle for whatever reason, you do not have to use one manufactured by Apple.

        > throw in 480p webcams on top of it

That’s factually incorrect, Rick. I hope you know that.

        > have shit batteries in our overpriced phones

Also false. See any iPhone Plus series battery statistics in particular.

        > throttle the phones on top of it because Apple users are known to be gullible

So you are saying that a few benchmark points are worth more than a good battery life over the years. Sure, Rick, sure… By the way, you can disable the throttling if you don’t care about your battery, starting with iOS 11.3.

        > it’s not like we ever built a phone where a customer could buy a new battery

Which Android flagship has a removable battery in 2017? You look at a general market trend, stretching over every single manufacturer, and blame Apple.

        > But my main gripe with iOS is having to rely on iTunes for music.

You can download music on the iPhone directly. You also don’t need iTunes for setting up the phone. You don’t need it to update your phone. At most, you need it to backup your phone, if you don’t use iCloud.

        > i can connect an Android and Windows phone to my laptop and transfer/copy music freely but with an iPhone i have to use iTunes, hell no. Yeah, i hate iTunes that much.

There is a reason why Apple chose iTunes over the normal explorer. They didn’t want people to insert files that the iPhone can’t display via the normal Windows file explorer. What I hated the most when I was using iPhones was this piece of trash. It’s pure bloatware, slow, unintuitive, and I think it exemplifies everything that’s wrong with Apple’s software ecosystem – it may look optimised, but behind the scenes it’s just a horrible job done by a team of unskilled developers, which is all it matters for the average iSheep out there.

LOL, this is most likely coming from a Windows user. I hope your PC is still going to start up after the next Windows update has trashed it.

By the way, those “unskilled developers” you talk about managed to completely exchange a whole file system (HFS+ -> APFS) without any major problems. Once Microsoft has done that feel free to message me.

    Hahaha
This is a perfect example of that I’m right.
I always hated to be dependent, relied on other people, cloud, third party servers, services, corporations. That’s one of the reasons why I hate Apple, Steam, today’s digital download games, Games as a Service, Software as a Service, Windows 10, phones with Google Sync backup only (phones that don’t have an option to back up app data locally, offline), etc. In other words: today’s IT, tech world, the trend.

When I purchase a phone, the primary decision factor is that can this be used independently, offline? So the removable battery (batteries have short lifespan), FM Radio (better than online stream), IR blaster, offline backup option, option to disable forced and automatic updates, … are the most important factors of a phone. I don’t use Google Play. I always sideload apps (I download the .apk and data files, then burn them to M-DISC DVD (perfect backup solution) after I tried them out on my phone). You can’t do this with iPhones. iPhones are dependent on iTunes. With an iPhone, you can’t even downolad any file from the internet. Pathetic.

Same as with PC and console games. They’re dependent on the servers, online store, companies, DRM, … You don’t own the digital / download games. That is the trend today. Even the single player games require internet connection and mandatory updates. The companies can delete even your purchased games, revoke your licences. If the servers go down, you can’t play with your games. Etc.
The updates can ruin your game. That’s what happened to GTA San Andreas. They removed resolution options and a lot of songs from the game.

    http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/05/talking_point_the_fragility_of_buying_download_games

I always download the no-steam (cracked) version of the games and boycott the current trend. And I’m not alone.
