The sheer amount of different media formats out there in today's connected world makes it difficulty for users to have access to these files in all situations. While it may not be a issue playing the files in a popular media player like VLC, or AIMP when it comes to audio, it is usually the mobile devices and hardware players that refuse to play specific formats, regardless of popularity.

The only solution besides buying a device that supports the format is conversion of the media into a format that the player supports.

Free Media Converter

Free Media Converter is a free program for Windows that you can use for many different purposes. The only issue that I ran into was during installation, where it offered to install the all-present Babylon Toolbar on the system. You can disable that by unchecking the selections the program made for you, and hitting the decline button afterwards (note that the screenshot shows the German installer, and that Ablehnen on the left means decline).

If you by accident have installed the Babylon Toolbar, check out our uninstallation guide for a detailed walk through on how to get that thing off of your computer again.

Once you have side-stepped the issue, you will be greeted by a clean interface.  You can load media files into the program by selecting Add Files, and one or multiple files from your computer using the built-in browser. If you prefer drag and drop, that is supported as well.

The program lists all media files in the interface, along with title, length, the current size, and the select output format. As far as videos go, a thumbnail image is displayed as well to give you an indication of the original file's contents.

Previews are available by selecting a file first, and using the media preview buttons on the lower right corner. The remaining parts of the interface are filled with output setting information, and the toolbar that is linking to actions at the top.

Free Media Converter makes use of output profiles, and ships with a lot of them pre-configured. From general audio and video profiles, to profiles for specific smartphones and media players, to online video and high definition media.

The select output format is highlighted with its parameters under profile on the right side of the interface. You can make modifications here, for instance to the video resolution or bitrate, or the audio sample rate. Once you are satisfied with your selection, you can click on the convert button in the program toolbar to start the conversion of all media files.

But converting multimedia files is just one of the features that Free Media Converter ships with. You can also use it to trim, join, and edit video and audio files.Trimming for instance opens a new window where part of the video or audio can be trimmed.

Free Media Converter besides that offers options to download video from the Internet. The program supports popular video hosting sites like YouTube, Vimeo or Dailymotion, and can download videos hosted on these sites provided that you enter the video url into the program interface. You can furthermore send these downloaded videos directly to the converter to convert them into different file types.

Another option is the video recorder, which you can use to record part or all of the desktop, or webcam.

Closing Words

If you are currently looking for a media converter with light editing options, then you may want to take a closer look at Free Media Converter. The program's feature set is impressive for a free program. Just make sure you pay attention to the installation to avoid installing third party software that you may not want or need on your system.

Well it all comes down to your own personal preferences and needs. You find lots of great converters there. If one does all you want, there is not really a need to switch.
