Monitor Energy Saver (MonitorES) is a free program for Windows devices designed to save energy by turning the monitor off on system lock.

Many computer users who lock their computer regularly do not perform additional actions before doing so. It is for instance possible to save energy by turning off the monitor before it is locked.

This is especially helpful for laptops to preserve battery power, but can also save some money on the next utility bill.

Monitor ES is a small portable software program for the Windows operating system that can be used to perform that operation and some additional ones automatically.

It can be configured to automatically turn off the computer monitor if the computer system gets locked by the user. An alternative to that would be to enable the screensaver instead, if that is preferred.

Screensavers on the other hand do not save energy or the screen anymore, which means they are a purely cosmetic feature.

But turning off the computer monitor or enabling the screensaver are just two options offered by  Monitor Energy Saver.

It can perform various additional tasks after you lock the computer system. This includes setting a custom away message in compatible instant messengers, or stopping the playback of music or media files in popular media players.

It supports a wide variety of media players including AIMP, Winamp, Media Monkey, Windows Media Player, WMP Classic or Quicktime.

As far as supported messengers are concerned, it supports a few including digsby and Yahoo Messenger.

The most recent version of the application supports hotkeys which you can use to invoke the program's functionality. That's great if you use the keyboard often to lock the computer.

Monitor ES basically helps computer users save money (and the environment) by reducing the amount of energy their computer systems consumes when it gets locked.

The portable software program is offered for Microsoft Windows operating systems and Ubuntu Linux.

Update: The program website is no longer available, and downloads are not as well because of it. We have uploaded the latest release version of the program for Windows to our own server. Please note that we don't support the program in any way, and have uploaded it purely for archiving purposes.

In WinXP (at least), if you right-click on your desktop, select properties, then select Screen Saver tab, then click the Power button at the bottom you’ll wind up in “Power Option Properties” (Why Microsoft chose to bury the POWER options on the Screen Saver tab is beyond my understanding).

There you can choose a power scheme AND choose a time to turn off the computer monitor.

    No additional software needed!
