50 Best Firefox Extensions for Power Surfing

One of my first posts here on the website was about essential Firefox extensions for the latest Firefox. Pchere got a step further and compiled a list of 50 Firefox extensions all neatly sorted and explained in various categories including file downloads, Privacy / Security and Web Searches.

As I said every extension has a short description that explains its main features. The author unfortunately missed to mention the version those extensions require but claimed that most would work with the latest Firefox version 1.5.

Update: With Firefox approaching the version 13 mark in the next weeks, it is time to look at the suggested extensions, and whether they are still compatible with the latest version of the browser. Chance is, that at least a few of the extensions are not compatible with newer versions of Firefox. Lets take a look at the available extensions:

Control Firefox Tabs - It is interesting to note that only one of the listed extensions links to Mozilla's Addons repository. The remaining extensions either link to pages that are no longer available, or pages hosted on other sites. The extensions that are still valid are:

Control Website Links

  • IE Tab - Displays a website with Internet Explorer's rendering engine
  • Liquid Words - Look up words and information
  • Linky - Adds more link management options to Firefox
  • Linkification - Converts text links into clickable links

Control File Downloads, all about downloads and handling downloads in the browser:

Control Web Page behavior and navigation:

Control Privacy / Security

Control Web Searches

  • Better Search - Enhances search results with thumbnails
  • Next Please - Jump to next and previous pages with the help of this extension

Control Your Email

  • Better Gmail - Adds new features to Google Mail
  • Webmail Notifier - Notifies you if new mail arrives in support web mail accounts
  • Gmail Manager - A notifier for Google Mail

Control your Bookmarks

  • Xmarks Sync - A bookmarking add-on for Firefox
  • Stumbleupon - An extension for the excellent Firefox add-on
  • Reliby -Reload RSS feeds.
  • Shareaholic - Sharing extension for Firefox, to share web contents on social networking sites.

Interesting list and you’re right it is a shame they didn’t confirm Firefox 1.5 compatability.

I expect we’ll have some comments on who uses which extension, so I’ll kick it off 8^)

Noscript, Adblock (with the FitersetG updater), ForecastFox, Tabbrowser preferences and Nandu (HTML editor).

Some of these are pretty cool and I was not aware of them, but you are right – it would have been nice to specifically mention those that are compatible with Firefox 1.5

I suspect others who comment will list their favorite extensions, so here are mine at the moment:

Adblock (with the filtersetG updater), Forecast Fox, Nandu (handy-dandy HTML editor), NoScript, Tabbed Browser Preferences .

Sorry, did not mean to post twice (three times now!) – I am getting old and feeble minded!
