Free file host list december 2005

I published a large file host list last month and good lots of positive and some negative feedback concerning the list. The list contained sites that allow users to upload files to web services on the Internet, for instance to access them from other locations or share them with friends or even the public.

A negative aspect was that it only featured a few categories that were not that useful to find a host that suited special needs.

Therefore, I decided to compile a new list with more information available on first glance to help you pick the right file hosting site. Information besides the site name consist of the following parameters.

Reg: Does the site require a registration before you can use their services ? Registration means free registration of course.
Filesize: Is there a maximum size for a single file, in Mb ? No res = no restrictions
Space: How much disks pace is allocated for the user ? If there is no registration the max filesize has been taken as max space allowed. No res = no restrictions
Bandwidth: Are there bandwidth limitations?
Filetypes: Are certain filetypes not allowed to be uploaded?
Hotlinking: Does the site allow hotlinking ?
Expires: Are the files auto-deleted after a time, if yes the number of days are shown. If the number is unknown yes will be shown. Sometimes files only get deleted after inactivity for a certain time, if thats the case a "i" is added to the number. Sometimes file get deleted after a certain number of downloads, if thats the case a "d" is added to the number.

It took me about 6 hours to compile the list, its divided into file hosts with and without registrations and image hosts with and without registrations. If you have additions let me know and I add them in the January list.

Update: We had to remove the majority of file hosts from the list as most are no longer available on the Internet. I would like to make two suggestions though that have not been on this list before. A great image hosting site is Imgur and a great file hosting site is Mediafire.

  11. Arne Evertsson February 20, 2006 at 4:47 pm # is a Swedish service for sending files up to 2 GB. It has a nifty upload progress bar (works with IE and Safari). The server is located in Sweden for better performance for locals. is free without registration, and keeps the file for 7 days or until downloaded. There is no restriction on bandwith or file types. Hotlinking is not provided.

i have an account on rapidshare, but the problem is, that rapidhare deletes my uploads because they are porno files. With the use of rapidshare i haven't paid none cent about 4 months because i have this advantage:"Upload your files in your Premium-Zone, and you will get points for downloads of your files. You can then convert your collected points to free premium-accounts. (Check "Convert points" in your premium-zone.) You can also extend your own premium-account for free. You will get one point per download if the downloader is a free-user AND your file is bigger than 1 MB AND the downloader has generated less than 5 points in the last hour."
Do you know if there is another server with this advantage?

I personally like since you can upload unlimited 1.5 GB files for free. Its definietly better then rapidshare and megaupload since there is no annoying wait before file downloads and the speed is way better.

If anyone is interested, you can use Google code as a hosting site. It is free, and if you need more space, just make a new project. If you've exceded the space allowed for all of your projects, and maxed out the number of projects (and you probably won't, because you get ten projects at, I think, 100MB each, so that's 1000MB)), just make a new gmail account with google. You can do that nearly forever, and Google won't delete anything.

You should add They have both online backup and file sharing.
Their free accounts start at 5GB.

They offer 128-bit encryption and scheduled unattended backup operation. They also offer public and private file sharing. Their private sharing allows me to control who can view my shared files. Nice touch.

Recently, they added ability to transfer files between accounts - backend to backend, no bandwidth copy - amazingly fast - way cool.
