These ads come in different forms, some are displayed on the page without affecting the video, some are displayed as a small bar in the video, and some are displayed as a short clip before the video even starts.

Youtube displays a countdown, letting the user know when the selected video will begin playing. Most visitors sit the ad out thinking there is no way to hide or stop it.

What they do not know is that there is a method to skip the ad. A page reload, often initiated by pressing F5, will reload the Youtube page.

The interesting thing that happens is that the ad clip will not be played again before the video, Youtube starts playing the selected video directly after a refresh.

youtube video ads

The easiest way to skip Youtube video ads therefor is to press F5 as soon as they start playing. This reloads the whole Youtube page, and starts playing the video right away, without the advertisement.

We have tested this extensively and it worked every time. Youtube might still display one of those banner overlay ads at the bottom of the video but not another commercial.

Have other Youtube tips and tricks? The ads seem to be ten second flash animations that appear at the bottom of the video in almost transparent form stopping the video playback until the user either clicks outside of the ad to resume the video or on the ad to be taken to the advertisers website.

The creator of Tubestop, a Firefox extension that stops autoplayback of Youtube videos, noticed that his extension did also prevent the advertisement from appearing which he attributes to the fact that Youtube ads are only displayed on the main site and not when the videos are embedded or syndicated.

Tubestop therefor stops the ads in Youtube effectively and should be downloaded by everyone who does not like to see this kind of ads on Youtube.

Update: TubeStop is still available on the Mozilla Add-ons repository. The extension is a restartless add-on, which means that you do not have to restart the web browser to complete the installation. It works right away on all new tabs that you open, and after a reload on old tabs as well.

When you open a web page with an embedded YouTube video, which can be on the primary YouTube website or a third party site, you will notice that the extension stops the video from playing right away. It will stop videos or video ads that are played before the actual video. The following screen is then displayed in the video’s location.

TubeStop directly from the Mozilla Add-ons repository.
