href="http://www.ghacks.net/2009/09/22/yahoo-meme-invites/">Yahoo Meme a while ago here at Ghacks and gave out several invites to Yahoo’s Twitter-like service. The service was in private beta back then which meant that only users with invites were allowed to use it. Yahoo Meme expands on the basic options that Twitter is offering to its users. It gets rid of the character limit and accepts direct picture, video and audio posts. Something that Twitter users can only post as links.

Yahoo Meme is still in beta but a recent silent change makes it possible to anyone to register an account without invites. That’s a big change to before and it remains to be seen if the developers have opened registrations just for a short time or permanently.

<span

The process does not take longer than a few minutes the most.

Yahoo Meme offers many advantages over Twitter like the aforementioned ones. The only thing that it currently lacks is popularity. This could change if the service is promoted in the right way by Yahoo. You can follow Ghacks at Yahoo Meme by visiting the official <a

It is currently in alpha stage and can only be accessed by users who received an invite from a user who is already using the platform. Yahoo Meme is different from Twitter as it offers its users more options. Probably the most exciting option is to be able to post not only text but also audio, video and images directly to a meme. Twitter users are by default left with links pointing to this content. There are a few workarounds for Twitter users to view these contents directly but nothing that has been officially sanctioned by the Twitter team (as far as we know).

Another interesting aspect of Yahoo Meme is that there does not seem to be a character limit for post. Some might like the limitation that Twitter is imposing on users but it sometimes limits how something is said due to the character limit.

Most users who currently use Yahoo Meme seem to be using it for multimedia content, especially images which seem to be the most popular memes right now. Photos can be uploaded from the local computer system or by pasting a link into the upload form directly.

Videos are currently only accepted from Youtube and Vimeo and music can be pasted as a link that needs to point to an mp3 file on the Internet.

The usual options to follow other users are provided. The updates posted by followed users will then be displayed in the dashboard. There are several themes to choose from to change the layout. It is not as sophisticated as Twitter yet which becomes obvious when looking at the popular posts or users to follow. That might need some work. The concept on the other hand is user friendly and removes several of those dreaded limitations that Twitter imposes on its users.

Invites

Every new Yahoo Meme account currently gets seven friend invites. I want to hand out these invites to Ghacks users. What I would like to do is to give these to users who are willing to invite at least four other Ghacks members who would like to join (that’s three for them then and four for Ghacks members) so that everyone gets an invite in the end. If you want an invite reply with a comment. No need to add your email address in the text. You do need to add it in the email field (which is only visible to admins) to receive the invitations.
