A Fix It solution is a script that runs like any other executable. It will directly repair problems in the Windows operating system or programs running on it without further user interaction.

The Windows Media Player Fix It repairs several issues that users may experience when trying to run the built-in multimedia player.

  • Windows Media Player 11 or newer crashes or stops responding.
  • Windows Media Player does not start at all, or some of its user interface elements remain blank.
  • Streaming video or audio are not playing because settings for Windows Media network streaming are corrupt.
  • Users encounter browsing and searching problems in Windows Media Player. This can be caused by corrupt Windows Media Player libraries.
  • An installed copy of Nero Video Burning plugin causes Windows Media Player to crash or stop responding. This is caused by incompatibilities.

Windows Media Player users who are experiencing any of the issues listed above may want to download the Fix It tool to their system. All they need to do locally is to start it and follow the instructions.

If you do not use WMP 11 as your main media player you might be wasting resources caused by this monitoring. By default the My Music, My Pictures and My Videos folders are monitored and new files are automatically added to the Windows Media Player 11 library.

Folder Monitoring can be disabled for most folders listed in the section of Windows Media Player. To remove folder monitoring right-click the Windows Media Player title bar and select Tools > Options from the menu. Click on the Library tab and there on the Monitor Folders button.

The folders monitored are either My Personal Folders or My folders and those that i can access. Only one of those is active and needs to be removed and ignored. The default folders cannot be removed at all and the Rip Folder can not be removed or ignored at all.

The default folders shown which are all shown as Automatically Added can be changed to Ignore which means that those folders will not be monitored anymore. Change all folders possible to Ignore and click on OK to make the changes.

The best way to install Windows Media Player 11 is to download it from an official download parter such as Softpedia and install it that way.

I prefer to use alternatives like the excellent SMPlayer which can play most formats without any difficulties.

The download is available right from the microsoft homepage. I found a list of the new features, not sure if it is correct though:
