It should be compatible with most editions and versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows XP and Windows Vista. An icon will be placed in the Windows system tray after installation which can be used configure the reminders.

A right-click on the icon of the reminder software opens a menu that can be used to set a reminder for a specific time in the future. About a dozen different options like setting one or five minute reminders are offered as presets. Another option is the ability to create a custom reminder by entering a value in minutes.

<span

Remind Me In is therefor more of an alarm clock software than a reminder software. It still can have its uses for some users, for example to remind the user to take the pizza out of the oven.

The software uses only about three Megabytes of computer memory while running. It would be excellent if the developer would add an option to add a note to the reminder. Remind Me In can be downloaded directly from the developer’s website.

Flickr Tools: Flickr Downloadr

Software

Windows

download photos

flickr

flickr download

flickr tools

photo host

photos

portable software

window software
<guid

This makes it attractive for software developers to produce Flickr Tools as they can reach a huge audience with them. Flickr Downloadr is a new software program to download photos of Flickr. The first version of the tool has been released recently with several feature disabled that have not been implemented yet.

As of now it is only possible to download photos from one specific user. Only photos that are not licensed with all rights reserved will be downloaded while the rest will be skipped. The Flickr tool only works under Windows Vista or Windows 7. It is on the other hand a small portable application that works great if you regularly download files from the photo hosting website.

The application will display the option to download photos by user, group or everyone with only the user option enabled. The next page will display a simple form that accepts a name as input. It will search Flickr for that username and display the photos as thumbnails on the next page of the software program. There are two additional options that only search the favorites or contacts of a person.

<img

It is furthermore possible to navigate the photo collection. Copyrighted images are displayed with a C on the thumbnail. A click on the Next button will initiate the download of the photos to the local computer.

We have covered similar tools in the past that provide additional options. Those are <a

The program will automatically scan all running processes during startup and display information about them in a table. Among the information provided are the name, process ID, company that developed it and a rating. The ratings range from safe to malicious and unknown. This makes it easy to identify problematic processes that require further investigation.

The program comes with a process modules viewer which will display the various modules a process is accessing on a computer system. The modules are rated with the same rating system and can give additional information about the process in question. Additional options include the ability to explore the system directory of a process and to perform a action on selected processes.

Actions can be to ignore (the default value), close or delete a process on the computer system. Closing will simply kill the process on the system while deleting will try and delete the file on the hard drive so that the file cannot be executed anymore.

<img

The main problem of Assassin SE is the lack of ratings for several known applications. It was not able to identify True Crypt, Foxit Reader or Newsbin Pro which are common applications. It did however identify Firefox, uTorrent and Skype.

The software program can be helpful when checking the processes that are running on a computer system. It still requires some manual research after being left with unknown and potentially dangerous processes but it helps at reducing the amount of processes that have to be checked.

Window Management Software Taekwindow

Software

Windows

Open Source

portable software

taekwindow

Window Management Software

window software

window-management

windows software

Taekwindow is a lightweight portable Open Source window management software which combines several much needed window management features. The tool uses about 1.7 Megabytes of computer memory while running. It requires the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 and should be compatible with most versions and editions of Microsoft Windows.

The window management software adds three configurable features to Windows. Those are the ability to resize or move a window and to scroll the contents of a window. The resize and move options allow to do that to the active window without having to move the mouse to a border of the active window. Resizing the window is for instance possible from anywhere by pressing [ALT] and pressing the right mouse button.

The same is true for moving the active window only that this is done with the left mouse and [ALT] from anywhere.

<img

The window that has the focus will be scrolled by default in Windows. This can be changed in the program’s options to scroll the window that lies under the cursor position. This makes it possible to scroll a window without changing focus.

Play Random MP3 Albums In Winamp

Software

Windows

copy mp3

mp3

mp3 albums

mp3 random

music software

random mp3

winamp

winamp software

window software

RandoMP3 is a lightweight software program for Winamp that offers two interesting features. The first feature called Audition will randomly select a MP3 album from the music collection and start playing it in Winamp. The program provides the means to move or delete the folder as well which makes it an ideal application for testing new mp3 albums before making them part of the music collection.

The user has to pick a root folder of the mp3 collection at start of the application. That root folder remains as long as it is not changed in the options to another folder. RandoMP3 can be closed after Winamp starts playing the mp3 album.

The root folder has to be rescanned when new mp3 albums have been copied into it. The second application is Charger which can fill a removable device with a specific amount of Megabytes of music. Alternatively it can fill the device until it reports to be full. This program is only directly available in the program folder that RandoMP3 gets installed into.

<span

The software remembers songs that already have been copied which ensures that no songs will be copied again if new songs that have not been copied yet are available in the mp3 collection.

Control iTunes Playback With Shortcuts

Software

Windows

apple

itunes

iTunes media keys

iTunes Playback

itunes shortcuts

itunes software

itunes tips

music player

portable software

window software
<guid

Other music players like Winamp or AIMP provide that feature which might be interesting for many users.

The developer of iTunes Media Keys released a public alpha version of his software. The software adds global shortcuts which can be used to control the playback in iTunes.

To be more precise it adds four shortcuts that can be used to play / pause, stop and to switch to the next and previous track. The default shortcuts are assigned to [Shift UP, DOWN, RIGHT or LEFT]. It did also recognize a Logitech media keyboard and changed the shortcuts automatically to the media keys instead.

<span

Users can listen to music on the site, discover related musicians and communicate with other users. The music portal provides access to a feature called Radio which essentially makes it possible to stream music that is related to artists, tags or users.

This radio feature is being used by Last Sharp, an application that can be used to download music from Last.fm. Last Sharp requires the Microsoft .net framework 2.0 and an operating system that is either Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista. The application itself can be unpacked and started from any directory on the hard drive without installation. The only other requirement is a Last.fm user account to be able to tune in and download the music.

The default language of the interface is German but it can be set to English in the options. The options are in the lower left corner. The user can set the download directory, add a proxy, enable continuous downloads or select to normalize mp3 files with MP3 Gain.

The heart of the program is the Tune In section which can be used to load a 30 track playlist filtered by tag, similar artists or account specific parameters. All tracks of the playlist are selected by default and can be downloaded by right-clicking in the window and selecting the Download option from the context menu. Tracks that are not wanted can be unchecked. The Remember Downloads setting in the option is handy to prevent that already downloaded tracks are downloaded again.

It should be noted that the downloads have to be in order. Selecting a download from the middle will prevent downloads of tracks that are listed above it in the playlist. It is however still possible to recreate the playlist which will be populated with songs that can be downloaded.

One interesting parameter is continuous download. It will automatically pull the next 30 track playlist from Last.fm once the end of the last has been reached. This effectively means unlimited downloads for as long as the application is running.

Last Sharp is available on a German website. Just scroll down to the section called Aktuelle Version and click on the Download link which leads to Rapidshare where the application can be downloaded.

Data Recovery Tools: Encopy

Software

Windows

cd data recovery software

data recovery software

data recovery tools

data-recovery

encopy

portable software

recover files

window software
<guid

While companies should probably hire data recovery specialists to recover the data home users might want to try free recovery tools before thinking about other possibilities. Encopy is a free portable data recovery tool that can be pointed to files to try to recover the data. It works with any hard drive and optical drive connected to the computer.

Its portability make it an excellent companion for a tool collection on an USB device. The usability of Encopy has a severe limitation. The file browser can be pointed to select exactly one file from the medium or folder. Users who rely solely on the file browser will be dissatisfied by this. It is possible to use wildcards to include multiple files in the data recovery process. To copy all executable files from hard drive d one would use the wildcard d:\*.exe to do so.

Encopy comes with a set of options that define and alter the data recovery process. It is for example possible to verify the data after, force faster copying or skip system files.

<img

It did throw a few runtime errors on a test system which could not be reproduced the next time though.
