The wallpapers are usually provided in several monitor resolutions and can be downloaded without registration or paying a fee. Several wallpaper websites have begun to create software programs to make it comfortable for users to grab wallpapers from their websites.

Dream Wallpaper is a Windows Wallpapers application which provides access to wallpapers in several categories including nature, games & movies and cartoon. It ships with a few wallpapers that are installed with the application itself and provides an easy to use interface to browse those local but also network wallpapers.

Network Wallpapers referring obviously to the wallpapers on their website which according to them contains more than 80K wallpapers. Dream Wallpaper uses two tabs to distinguish between widescreen and normal wallpapers. Each tab contains a column on the left hand that links to local and network wallpapers in various categories.

The local wallpapers are accessible right away, a click on a network wallpaper category loads a preview of six wallpapers from the Dream Wallpaper website. The maximum that can be pulled this way is 54 wallpapers in each category which seems a bit unfortunate but is probably part of the greater plan to bring more traffic to their website.

The Windows wallpapers application has a quirk besides that. There is no information about the supported resolution next to the wallpapers which means that it is possible to end up with a wallpaper that gets stretched or otherwise mangled on the computer desktop.

There is also no direct way to include already stored wallpapers in the application. The only possible solution would be to move the wallpapers into the program folder. This requires however the creation of a thumbnail for the same wallpaper. A far better solution would be to pick the wallpapers that you like from the application and copy them to your local wallpaper folder.

The website is clearly structured and good to navigate. It does contain advertisement but not enough to avoid it. It uses a better structure as well, wallpapers can be sorted by screen resolution or theme. The good thing about this is that Linux and Macintosh users can simply visit the website and download the wallpapers they want which Windows users obviously could as well.

The application would make more sense if it would provide additional options and some comfort in adding local wallpapers that have existed on the system prior to installing the software.

The best way to search for wallpapers on the website is to use the navigation on the right sidebar. You can either use the categories like Nature, Movies and Cars to find wallpapers or start by selecting a resolution between 1024×768 and 2560×1600. Wallpaperstock offers five normal resolutions and five widescreen resolutions to choose from.

The featured category is another element that is worth to be mentioned. It contains themed wallpapers such as Valentine’s Day or Winter wallpapers. Everyone can download wallpapers from the website without registration.

Several of my friends already have two monitors setup as dual monitors to be able to display twice the amount of information on the screen. This makes perfect sense for users who do need a lot of information on the screen at once.

I know some Poker players for instance who use two monitors to play eight games at once. It is actually pretty hard to find wallpapers for dual monitor setups. Sure, you could merge two wallpapers and use them as the background but it is also possible to use dual screen wallpapers from the site that I just found.

All wallpapers on the site are available in 2560 x 1024 and 3200 x 1200 format. If you run a resolution of 1280 x 1024 you should of course download wallpapers with the size of 2560 x 1024 and users with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 should download the 3200 x 1600 wallpapers.

One main feature of Desktop Nexus is that wallpapers are available in a lot of different formats that suit full screen and widescreen monitors. Resolutions start at 800×600 for full screen monitors and end at 1600×1200 there. The widescreen wallpapers start at 1280×800 and 2560×1600.

You do find a lot of great looking wallpapers at the website. I think it is rather strange that the download count is so low for all of the wallpapers. Maybe it is because the site is relatively new. You do not need to be registered to download a wallpaper in the size that you want which is definitely another plus for this website.

Resolutions go up to 1900×1200 with a lot of widescreen wallpapers in the resolution 1680×1050. The majority is showing natural images like landscapes, plants, animals and buildings.

One nice feature is the slideshow. If you move your mouse over the current image three buttons are shown on the top of it. The play button starts the slideshow which is loading one image after the other while the other two buttons are for manually navigating the pictures.

It took a while until I figured out how to save the high resolution images. Only a thumbnail is displayed that is not linking directly to the image. You actually have to left-click the image to display the download link to the high resolution image.

The biggest images can have a size of nearly 1 Megabyte, could take some time to load on slow connections.

The site features 11 galleries each with 16 wallpapers that fit widescreen resolutions. My notebook is running on a native resolution of 1280 x 800 and I was very happy to find this resource. Sure I had to convert them from their resolution to 1280 x 800 but the ratio remained the same. So, if you have a widescreen monitor head out to High Resolution Wide Screen Wallpapers to download some or even all of them.
