Cloudo is a web operating system that has been in private beta for a long time. A public beta started just recently which allows interested users to signup and use the web operating system. A web operating system is basically an online desktop that is providing many features that operating systems like Windows or Linux are offering. The main concerns that users have when using web operating systems is the speed of the application, data safety and functionality.

The signup process requires no email verification, there is actually no option to enter an email during signup which raises the question about data safety when the password or username is forgotten. Cloudo should work in most modern web browsers. A test in Firefox revealed an initial display problem which was solved by right-clicking and selecting a different skin from the list of available ones. The web operating system did not recognize Internet Explorer 8 yet.

Cloudo can be accessed from desktop computers or mobile devices but is far from feature complete. The public beta release is actually the same release that developers were able to access for about a year.

Some features that are already implemented are the file uploader, viewer, text editor and calendar plus a free goodies such as games, widgets and mashups. Loading times are acceptable most of the time although it usually involves waiting a few seconds before an application shows up.

Cloudo has been designed to be a open plattform meaning that it is possible for web developers to develop and share applications they create in the system. The development environment seems to be already accessible.

The public beta signup is time limited. If you are interested in Cloudo you should make sure to signup immediately even if you do not plan on using the service in the near future.

After two previously mentioned services, I’d like to add another web desktop provider to the “list”. A German company well-known for developing advanced audio and video editing software decided to offer their own “portable desktop” to those who register for free. I’ve tried it myself and I can honestly say it looks promising, although it’s still a beta version. Magix’s applications are very stylish and pleasant and this free service doesn’t make any exception to that rule.

After creating a free account at myGOYA and signing in using the https protocol you can see an overview of your virtual system drawing up how many messages / e-mails / contacts / calendar records you got and free space available on the web hard drive. MyGOYA provides 512 MB free space for e-mails and the same amount for all other data again. Should be quite sufficient for a light-weight and portable operating system.

After firing up the virtual system, which takes just few seconds, you can do many things that you’d be able to do on your own system like storing files, managing e-mails and contacts using built-in client, chatting with other users, planning events with a calendar, playing media files, scheduling tasks and so forth.

The system is also connected with other Magix’s free services like photo album, website/blog maker etc, creating a huge complex of services and tools that you can use along with the virtual desktop itself. Widget support with 4 widgets at present could become more relevant if there are more of them in the future.

The last feature I wouldn’t like to forget is related to the “tab mania”. Rather then being solid and permanent, each desktop is in fact a tab that you can close whenever you like or create a new tab – desktop whenever you need.

Another web-based desktop environment fills in the collection of services of this kind. Using the solution from Magix is fast and simple and it might get pretty popular when all minor bugs (usually German / English translation) are fixed.

There aren’t really a lot of information about the requirements but I was able to access myGOYA with Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera.
