Microsoft made lots of promises at the time when Windows Vista was released concerning the extras that Windows Vista Ultimate users would get. Only a handful of extras have been released since then and many Windows Vista Ultimate users are questioning the underlying business model. There are not any statistics on how many users bought Vista Ultimate because of the exclusive extras but there are surely some who spend the extra money in fear or missing essential tools and applications.

The Windows Vista Ultimate extras that have been released are Windows Dreamscene, a video background application, A Hold’Em Poker game, a puzzle game called Tinker that comes with an extra sound scheme, two additional sound schemes, various MUI language packs and the Bitlocker and EFS Enhancement tools.

And that’s it. The main focus seems to be on entertainment which is probably a sector that most Windows Vista Ultimate users do not care about. To be fair, Windows Vista Ultimate is the only edition of Windows Vista that provides all features of the operating system by combining Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Enterprise in one software package.

The reason for this post? Well Microsoft released new extras which have already been mentioned in the second paragraph: The Tinker game that includes the sound scheme and another Dreamscene package.

Users who bought Windows Vista Ultimate for the extras can rejoice and enjoy another background and some new sounds. How many will be happy with the new extras? Take an educated guess.

There were basically two editions of Windows XP named Home and Professional. While this was confusing for some it turned out to be a minor problem. In Vista Microsoft decided to create more editions, Windows Vista Home Basic & Premium, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. I’m not even comparing Enterprise editions and those specifically designed for the European Union. Vista Ultimate was special. It contained all the features of all editions and got a bonus called Windows Vista Ultimate Extras.

Microsoft promised cutting edge programs, innovative services and unique publications just for Windows Vista Ultimate users. If you take a look at what they have delivered after more than one year: DreamScene, Language Packs, BitLocker, a poker game and sound schemes. What you get is a video screen saver, a game, some sounds, new languages (wonder how many need these) and Bitlocker which is a drive encryption software. Does that look like cutting edge programs, innovative services and unique publications to you ?

I wonder how many users who actually made the purchase thinking that they would receive some great add-ons and bonus will buy the ultimate edition of Windows 7 once it comes out. Are you a Vista Ultimate user ? What are your thoughts about the extras so far ? Oh, in case you are wondering what new extras have been released: Two new sound schemes and a third Dreamscene pack.

Vista Ultimate has a feature called Dreamscene that can be downloaded as a preview version including a Dreamscene content package which was released just a few days ago. Dreamscene makes it possible to use Videos as wallpapers in Windows Vista. The Dreamscene content package added four new videos that could be used as wallpapers in Windows Vista but you can also use other videos to use as a wallpaper.

It is nice that Microsoft added the functionality to Windows Vista Ultimate but all other versions miss the program because it is only available to Windows Vista Ultimate. I really don’t like the way Microsoft added and removed features in various Windows Vista versions, this is just confusing for the customers. Let me show you a free way to add video wallpapers to all versions of Windows Vista. All you need is the free VLC media player.

Just open a video file in VLC, right-click it and choose wallpaper from the menu. That’s it basically, we could finetune it further by doing the following. Go to Settings > Preferences > Interface > Main Interfaces > wxWidgets; disable taskbar and enable systray to remove the VLC windows from the taskbar. Go to Playlist and select Repeat current item to loop it. If the wallpaper option is not available in first place go to Settings > Preferences > Video > Output Modules > Direct X, select Advanced and check Enable Wallpaper Mode.

I was asking the question to myself the other day. Windows Vista will come out in many, and i mean many, editions and it could be quite confusing for customers to find the right product. As a short test, try and name the known Vista editions in their correct order. Did you get them right ? You probably know that there will be a Vista Home and and Vista Ultimate but what about the others and how do they differ ?

Imagine you want to buy a new computer and you have the choice between a cheaper one with Vista Home Basic and a more expensive one with Vista Home Premium. Which one would you take ? Let me walk you through the different Windows Vista editions and explain how they compare in functionality and pricing.

Windows Vista Differences:

It all starts with Windows Vista Starter which will not be sold in North America and the European Union but in countries like Russia and Brazil. This one could also be named Vista light because it has a physical memory limit of 256 megabytes and support for older cpu’s only. If you travel much and see a cheap Windows Vista Starter don’t buy it, it is useless for high-end computers.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium are the editions that will most likely be added if you buy a new computer. Home Basic is mostly for users who do not need advanced media capabilities such as HDTV support or DVD authoring. Home Pro does support this which makes up the biggest difference.

Home Basic has a limit of 8 GB of physical memory, Home Pro of 16 GB.

The next two in line are Microsoft Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Enterprise. Vista Business replaces Windows Xp Professional and includes all features of Vista Home Premium with the exception of Windows Media Center and related features such as Parental Controls. Adds features as fax support and IIS-web server.

Vista Enterprise will not be available on the free market, it has the same features as Microsoft Windows Vista Business and adds a multilingual user interface, drive encryption and Unix support.

Last but not least there is Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate which combines Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Vista Enterprise and ships with additional extras like a game performance tweaker.

You may purchase Vista Home Basic N and Business N in the European Union which is basically the same as the normal Vista editons but ships without the media player because of anti-trust laws.

The difference in pricing is 200$ between Vista Home Basic and Vista Ultimate. I personally think that this many editions will be confusing for the customers. I sometimes work tech support and they have troubles naming the current operating system they use – how on earth will they know the differences between all those Vista editions ?

The biggest advantage of Windows compared to Linux was in my opinion the ease of choosing the operating system. If you wanted Windows you went to a store and bought it. (XP Pro and Home changed this a bit already). With Linux you have millions of different distributions and beginners simply do not know which to choose. The exactly same problem will arise with Windows Vista.

The most common questions in the coming months on the internet will probably be ” does Vista Edition X support Y, will I be able to use Z on Edition A ?”
